About Cover & Cargo
A reference site about one product category, written by somebody who reads the manuals so you do not have to - and who tells you when the evidence is thin.

What this site is
Cover & Cargo covers tonneau covers and nothing else. Not bed liners, not toolboxes, not campers, not truck caps except where they genuinely compete with a cover. One category, 92 pages, 25 covers and accessories scored on a rubric we publish in full.
The reason for that narrowness is simple. The pages that currently rank for “best tonneau cover” belong to car-news sites, roof-rack retailers, toolbox shops and in one case a parenting blog. None of those publications is about tonneau covers. A site that is about tonneau covers can go deeper on fitment, sealing, warranty small print and the problems owners actually report, because it has nothing else to cover.
Who writes it
Michael W.
Owner, The First Buyer
The hands-on owner behind The First Buyer. He sets the editorial standard this site publishes under: every recommendation traces to a published source, every score is explained, and nothing is claimed that cannot be checked.
Cover & Cargo is published by The First Buyer, an independent publisher of buying-research sites.
What we do instead of testing
We do not run a test lab. We have not bolted these covers to a fleet of trucks, we do not measure drag in a wind tunnel, and we are not going to pretend otherwise - plenty of sites in this category do, and it is the easiest claim in the world for a competitor to falsify.
What we do instead, on every page:
- Read the published specifications. Load rating, warranty length, seal design, install time, materials, where it is assembled. Each one cited with a link and the date we read it.
- Read the warranty, not the headline number. Three of the brands in our registry publish coverage that does not transfer with the truck, and one requires registration. That is the kind of thing a spec table hides.
- Put conflicting evidence side by side. The published fuel-economy tests disagree with each other. We table all of them rather than quoting the one that flatters the category.
- Say when the evidence is thin. “We found only isolated reports of this, treat it as anecdote rather than a pattern” is a sentence this site is willing to publish.
- Name the gaps. Rough Country publishes no load rating. LOMAX publishes no install time. RETRAX publishes no canister dimensions for any retractable. Our tables say “not published” rather than guessing.
The full method, including the six metrics every cover is scored on and how they are weighted, is at our editorial policy page.
How it is funded
Through affiliate commissions. When you buy a cover through a link here, the retailer pays us a percentage at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. That is the entire business model - there is no sponsored content on this site, no paid placements and no brand has ever been given a say in a ranking.
The structural protection against commission bias is that the rubric is published. If we ranked a cover above another for reasons the six metrics do not support, you can see it. The full disclosure is here.
What we will never publish
- A testimonial, review or rating we did not receive from a real, named source.
- A price we cannot verify against a live feed. Our buttons say “check price” instead.
- A credential, certification or trade background the author does not hold.
- A claim to have fitted, installed or tested a cover we have not.
- A deal, discount or price prediction. We do not run seasonal deal pages.
Corrections
If we got something wrong, tell us
Specifications change, models get revised, and warranty terms are rewritten without announcement. If a figure on this site is out of date or wrong, email contact@coverandcargo.com and point at the page. Corrections get priority over everything else in the inbox, and a corrected page carries an updated “last updated” date.
