The Best Hard Folding Tonneau Covers
The mainstream premium choice, where the real differences are a load rating, a warranty term, and whether you can drive with it open.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Default pick: BAKFlip MX4. 400 lb, 5 years, 30-minute no-drill fit, revised EPDM perimeter seals plus drainage.
If you carry tall loads: UnderCover UltraFlex. The only cover here the maker rates to be driven with the cover folded open.
If you load the cover itself: Extang Solid Fold ALX, 600 lb on inch-thick TPO panels — 200 lb clear of anything else in this group.
What this class actually gives you
Hard folding is where most buyers with a real budget land, and for good reason: it is the only type that combines a meaningful load rating, proper latching security, a fast no-drill install, and the ability to get the cover out of the way without taking it off the truck.
What it does not give you is a clear bed. Every cover in this group folds to a stack at the cab, and that stack occupies roughly the front third of the bed whether the published figure says "100 percent bed access" or "two-thirds". The phrase means reachable, not empty, and it is the single most misread spec in the category.
Load ratings and warranty exclusions
| Cover | Load rating | Warranty | Exclusions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extang Solid Fold ALX | 600 lb | 5-year limited | Covers rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware |
| Extang Encore | 600 lb | 3 years | BOLT lock codes permanently to one vehicle |
| BAKFlip MX4 | 400 lb | 5 years | Not transferable |
| BAKFlip F1 | 400 lb | 5 years | Not transferable |
| UnderCover UltraFlex | 400 lb | 5-year limited | Do not tow the vehicle from the rear with the cover on |
| UnderCover ArmorFlex | 400 lb | 5-year limited | Original owner only, registration required |
| BAKFlip G2 | 300 lb | 3 years | Not transferable |
| Gator FX3 | 300 lb | 2-year limited | Plus a 30-day Gator exchange |
Read the exclusions column before the warranty column. A five-year term that does not transfer and requires registration is a different product from a five-year term that does neither.
Access positions, which are not all equal
"Bed access" on a folding cover comes in three flavors and makers use the term loosely:
- Strap position (two-thirds). Fold the panels forward and buckle them. Fast, one-handed, and the position you will actually use daily. This is what Extang publishes for both of its folding covers.
- Prop-rod position (full). Fold the cover upright against the rear window and prop it. UnderCover publishes this on the ArmorFlex. Slower, but the bed floor is genuinely clear behind the stack.
- Driven folded. Only the UnderCover UltraFlex publishes this — "100 percent bed access, all the time", rated to drive with the cover folded open. If you need tall loads moved regularly, no other cover in this group makes that claim.
The towing line in UnderCover's warranty
UnderCover's published warranty text states: do not tow your vehicle from the rear with the cover on. If you ever flat-tow or dolly the truck from the rear, read that clause before you buy — it is specific, it is published, and it is easy to miss.
Sealing, and the one detail you use every day
All eight use EPDM perimeter seals with drain tubes, which is the correct design. BAK revised the MX4's seal and clamp fit specifically to stop seepage between the cover and the bed rails, and publishes it as their best seal yet.
The one that changes daily life is UnderCover's dual-action tailgate seal on the ArmorFlex: the tailgate drops without unlatching the cover first. If you use the tailgate as a workbench or a seat, that is worth more than a hundred pounds of rating.
Choosing between them
Start from the rating. If nothing ever goes on top of the cover, the BAKFlip G2 at 300 lb does everything the MX4 does for less money — the MX4 against the G2 is the clearest version of that decision. If you do load the cover, the Extang pair at 600 lb are in a class of their own. If you carry tall loads, the UltraFlex's driven-folded rating settles it regardless of the other numbers.
The picks in detail
#1 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#2 · Carrying tall loads often
UnderCover UltraFlex
UnderCover · Hard folding
The folding cover built to be driven open: it folds to the cab and the maker states you can drive that way, which is the single most useful thing a folding cover can offer a person hauling tall loads.
What it does well
- Rated to be driven with the cover folded open — most folding covers simply do not say this
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating with a 5-year warranty behind it
- Polymer core gives the panel more dent resistance than a hollow aluminum skin
Where it gives way
- Folded to the cab it still consumes bed length, driving or parked
- UnderCover's warranty specifically rules out rear-towing the vehicle with the cover on — read it before you flat-tow
- Matte finish needs a dedicated protectant rather than wax
Skip it if: Towing from the rear with the cover fitted — UnderCover's own warranty says not to.
| Construction | Aluminum with a high-density polymer core |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None on most applications |
| Bed access | 100 percent, all the time — rated to drive folded open |

#3 · Carrying load on top of the cover
Extang Solid Fold ALX
Extang · Hard folding
The highest published load rating in this roundup at 600 lb, on inch-thick TPO panels in an aluminum frame, with tool-free clamps and a five-year warranty.
What it does well
- 600 lb published rating is the highest here by 200 lb — the one cover in the group you can actually plan to load
- Inch-thick TPO panels are substantially more rigid than a thin aluminum skin
- Tool-free clamps, and removable without tools when you need the whole bed
Where it gives way
- Folded, access is two-thirds — the full-bed answer is taking the cover off, not folding it further
- Panel thickness means more weight to lift off than a thin folding cover
- Warranty text covers rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware; the panel itself is described separately
Skip it if: Anyone who needs more than two-thirds of the bed open at once without pulling the cover off the truck.
| Construction | 1-inch EnduraShield TPO panels, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 600 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None — tool-free Jaw-Grip clamps |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when folded; removable without tools for full access |
| Sealing | Triple-fin perimeter seals |

#4 · Daily tailgate use
UnderCover ArmorFlex
UnderCover · Hard folding
Aluminum panels with UnderCover's Multi-Shield coating and a dual-action tailgate seal that lets the tailgate drop without unlatching the cover — a small thing you use every single day.
What it does well
- Dual-action tailgate seal means the tailgate drops without unlatching the cover first
- Prop rods give a genuine full-access position rather than only the two-thirds strap position
- Multi-Shield coating is specifically an abrasion and impact claim, not just a color
Where it gives way
- Warranty is original-owner only and needs registering — it does not follow the truck
- Two-thirds access is the quick position; full access needs the prop rods set up
- Assembled in Missouri but published spec sheets omit cover weight
Skip it if: Buyers who want a transferable warranty. Published coverage is original-owner only and requires registration.
| Construction | Aluminum panels with Multi-Shield coating |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black textured |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited, original owner only, registration required |
| Stated install time | Under 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None on most vehicles |
| Bed access | Two-thirds via straps, or full with integrated prop rods |
| Sealing | EPDM seals, integrated drain tubes, dual-action tailgate seal |

#5 · A toolbox at the bulkhead
Extang Encore
Extang · Hard folding
The folding cover that opens from both ends. Front-panel access via a BOLT one-key lock plus the usual rear access makes it the answer when a toolbox or a bulkhead box lives at the front of the bed.
What it does well
- Dual access front and rear is genuinely rare and solves the bulkhead-toolbox problem properly
- 600 lb rating matches the Solid Fold ALX
- The BOLT front lock uses the key already in your pocket — one fewer key on the ring
Where it gives way
- 3-year warranty is shorter than the Solid Fold ALX's 5
- BOLT locks code permanently to one vehicle and cannot be re-coded, so the cover's lock does not follow you to a new truck
- Two access points mean two seal paths to keep clean
Skip it if: Anyone who changes trucks often — the BOLT lock codes permanently to one ignition key and cannot be re-keyed.
| Construction | EnduraShield automotive-grade polymer panels, aluminum frame and hinges |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat on frame and hinges |
| Load rating | 600 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 3 years |
| Drilling | None — no-drill install |
| Bed access | Front AND rear — dual-access design |
| Front lock | BOLT one-key technology, codes to the truck's ignition key |
| Removal | Attaches or removes in seconds, no tools |
Specifications read from RealTruck — Extang Encore published specifications.

#6 · A gloss finish on a show truck
BAKFlip F1
BAK Industries · Hard folding
Gloss-black FRP skins over a foam core and powder-coated aluminum bottoms, carrying the same 400 lb rating and 5-year warranty as the MX4 with a different surface.
What it does well
- Same published 400 lb rating and 5-year warranty as the MX4
- FRP skin over a foam core is a genuinely different impact story from a hollow aluminum panel
- Keeps the third brake light visible in every cover position, which matters on trucks where a folded cover otherwise blocks it
Where it gives way
- Gloss shows every scratch and swirl a textured cover would absorb
- Costs more than the MX4 for the same rating and warranty — you are paying for the surface
- FRP is heavier than plain aluminum panels of the same size
Skip it if: A work truck. The gloss skin is the point of the F1, and a gloss panel in a yard picks up scratches an MX4's texture would have hidden.
| Construction | Fiber-reinforced plastic top skins, high-density foam core, powder-coated aluminum bottoms |
|---|---|
| Finish | Glossy black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None — no-drill clamp system |
| Bed access | Folds fully to the cab |
| Assembly | Assembled in Missouri |
Specifications read from RealTruck — BAKFlip F1 published specifications.

#7 · Spending less for folding
BAKFlip G2
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The MX4's older, cheaper sibling. Same no-drill clamp-on fit and the same drainage idea, with a 300 lb rating instead of 400 and a 3-year warranty instead of 5.
What it does well
- Gets you into aluminum hard folding without the flagship price
- Same no-drill clamp-on install as the MX4, same stated 30-minute figure
- Semi-gloss finish hides water spotting better than the MX4's texture
Where it gives way
- 300 lb rating against the MX4's 400 lb — a real difference if you ever put anything on top
- 3-year warranty against the MX4's 5
- Semi-gloss shows swirl marks from dry-wiping in a way textured panels do not
Skip it if: Anyone planning to stand on it or carry load on top. The published rating is 100 lb lower than the MX4's and that gap is the reason the two exist.
| Construction | Aircraft-grade aluminum, solid-core panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Semi-gloss black, corrosion-resistant coating |
| Load rating | 300 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 3 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on |
| Bed access | 100 percent — panels fold forward to the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, rounded hinges, integrated drainage |
Specifications read from RealTruck — BAKFlip G2 published specifications.

#8 · Entry-level hard folding
Gator FX3
Gator · Hard folding
Fiberglass-reinforced polymer panels with auto-locking slam latches and drain tubes, at the entry end of the hard folding class. The compromise is the warranty: two years.
What it does well
- Auto-locking slam latches engage without a second trip around the truck
- Dual-action rear seal and drain tubes at a price point where covers often skip both
- 30-day Gator exchange is unusual — if the cover is wrong for you, you are not stuck
Where it gives way
- 2-year warranty is the shortest in this registry
- 300 lb rating, same as the BAKFlip G2 and well under the Extang pair
- FRP panels are less dent-resistant than a thick TPO or foam-cored panel
Skip it if: Anyone who treats warranty length as the proxy for how long a cover lasts — two years is the shortest here.
| Construction | Fiberglass-reinforced polymer panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Semi-gloss textured black, low profile |
| Load rating | 300 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited 2-year against material defects, plus a 30-day exchange |
| Drilling | None — drill-free install |
| Bed access | Tri-fold with straps, or full access with prop rods |
| Sealing | Dual-action rear seal, EPDM seals and drain tubes |
| Assembly | Assembled in Missouri |

Common questions
What is the best hard folding tonneau cover?
The BAKFlip MX4 for most buyers: a 400 lb published rating, 5-year warranty, 30-minute no-drill clamp-on install and revised EPDM perimeter seals with integrated drainage. The UnderCover UltraFlex is the better buy if you carry tall loads, because it is the only cover in this group rated to be driven with the cover folded open.
Does a hard folding cover really give 100 percent bed access?
It gives 100 percent reach, not 100 percent clear space. Folded against the cab, the stack of panels occupies roughly the front third of the bed. If you carry full-length material regularly, a roll-up is the only type that genuinely vacates the bed.
Which hard folding cover has the highest weight capacity?
The Extang Solid Fold ALX and Extang Encore, both published at 600 lb evenly distributed — 200 lb above the 400 lb group of BAKFlip MX4, BAKFlip F1, UnderCover UltraFlex and ArmorFlex.
Do hard folding tonneau cover warranties transfer when I sell the truck?
BAK publishes its warranty as not transferable, and UnderCover's five-year term is original-owner only and requires registration. If you are buying a used truck with a hard folding cover already fitted, assume the warranty did not come with it.
