Tonneau Covers for the F-150 5.5 ft Bed
The crew-cab default, and the F-150 bed where the space an open cover takes matters most.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Confirm the bed first. Measure from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate along the floor. The 5.5 ft F-150 bed measures around 67 inches inside; the 6.5 ft measures around 79. If your number is near the middle, measure again.
On a short bed, what an open cover takes is the real trade-off. A folded stack costs a third of this bed; a retractable canister costs some of it permanently.
Confirming you have the 5.5 ft bed
The 5.5 ft bed is what Ford fits to SuperCrew F-150s, and it is the most common configuration on the road. But cab style is a strong hint, not proof: SuperCrews have been sold with the 6.5 ft bed too.
The measurement is the proof. Tape from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate, along the bed floor, and write the number down. That is the figure every fitment chart is keyed to. The method in full, including where people go wrong.
The short-bed arithmetic
This is the whole reason this page exists separately from the main F-150 page. The covers are the same; the trade-off between them is not.
| Cover type when open | On a 5.5 ft bed | On a 6.5 ft bed | On an 8 ft bed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft roll-up, rolled forward | Smallest loss | Smallest loss | Smallest loss |
| Hard folding, stacked at the cab | Roughly a third of the bed | Roughly a quarter | Roughly a fifth |
| Retractable, canister at the bulkhead | Permanent, and proportionally largest | Permanent | Permanent, and easiest to absorb |
Figures are the proportion of bed length a folded or rolled cover typically occupies, not a manufacturer specification. They are here to make the trade-off visible, and no manufacturer in this registry publishes the dimension - including RETRAX, which does not publish canister dimensions for any retractable.
Read that table honestly against how you use the bed. A hard folding cover advertising “100 percent bed access” means every inch is reachable. On a 5.5 ft bed, the folded stack still sits in the front third of the only bed you have. If you load long or bulky items more than occasionally, that is the number that should decide the purchase — not the load rating, not the warranty.
Which cover for a 5.5 ft F-150
BAKFlip MX4 — the default
400 lb evenly distributed, 5-year warranty, published 30-minute no-drill clamp-on install, revised EPDM perimeter seals with an integrated drainage system. The right answer for most 5.5 ft F-150s, with the folded-stack caveat understood.
TruXedo TruXport — if the bed does real work
Rolls completely forward for published 100 percent bed access with no stack left behind, fits in 30 minutes, 5-year warranty. On a short bed this type advantage is at its largest, and the price difference is substantial.
UnderCover UltraFlex — if loads are tall
The only cover in this registry rated to be driven with the cover folded open. On a short bed carrying something taller than the rails, that is worth more than any other spec here. 400 lb, 5-year limited warranty, 30-minute install.
RetraxPRO MX — if security is the point
500 lb, limited lifetime warranty, key-lockable at any position and independent of the tailgate. Understand that the canister is permanent and proportionally costs you more on this bed than on any longer one, and that RETRAX does not publish its dimensions.
The 5.5 and 6.5 ft covers are not close
About twelve inches of material separates them. There is no adjustment, no universal fit and no way to make one work on the other bed. If you are between the two, measure again before ordering — the 6.5 ft page is here.
The picks in detail
#1 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#2 · Full bed access on a budget
TruXedo TruXport
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.
What it does well
- Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
- 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
- Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box
Where it gives way
- Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
- Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
- Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks
Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.
| Construction | Vinyl over a clamp-on aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Bed access | 100 percent — rolls forward to the cab |
| Mounting | Clamp-on, vehicle-specific hardware included |

#3 · Carrying tall loads often
UnderCover UltraFlex
UnderCover · Hard folding
The folding cover built to be driven open: it folds to the cab and the maker states you can drive that way, which is the single most useful thing a folding cover can offer a person hauling tall loads.
What it does well
- Rated to be driven with the cover folded open — most folding covers simply do not say this
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating with a 5-year warranty behind it
- Polymer core gives the panel more dent resistance than a hollow aluminum skin
Where it gives way
- Folded to the cab it still consumes bed length, driving or parked
- UnderCover's warranty specifically rules out rear-towing the vehicle with the cover on — read it before you flat-tow
- Matte finish needs a dedicated protectant rather than wax
Skip it if: Towing from the rear with the cover fitted — UnderCover's own warranty says not to.
| Construction | Aluminum with a high-density polymer core |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None on most applications |
| Bed access | 100 percent, all the time — rated to drive folded open |
Specifications read from RealTruck — UnderCover UltraFlex (Gen 3) published specifications.

#4 · A retractable that will outlast the truck
RetraxPRO MX
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
- Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
- Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story
Where it gives way
- The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
- Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
- Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating
Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.
| Construction | Double-wall aluminum slats |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime, non-transferable |
| Locking | Key-lockable TraxLatch handle, infinite locking positions |
| Stated install time | Less than 60 minutes |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on rails, four quick-attach clamps |
| Temperature tested | -40°F to 180°F |
| Sealing | Integrated water management with drain tubes |
| Origin | Assembled in Grand Forks, North Dakota |
Specifications read from RealTruck — RetraxPRO MX published specifications.

#5 · The lowest cost per year of use
Tyger Auto T3 Soft Tri-Fold
Tyger Auto · Tri-fold (soft)
The cheapest cover in this registry that still names its materials. Pre-assembled crossbars fold with the cover, which is the one design detail that separates a good budget tri-fold from a bad one.
What it does well
- Crossbars fold with the cover rather than needing to be lifted out — the detail that makes a budget tri-fold usable daily
- 24 oz dual-coated marine-grade vinyl is published, not vague
- Clamp-and-latch fit, no drilling, on a cover at the bottom of the market
Where it gives way
- Soft tri-fold access only — the folded stack lives at the bulkhead
- Vinyl at this price is the first thing to go; plan on a protectant routine
- Tailgate-dependent locking means an unlocked tailgate is an unlocked bed
Skip it if: A truck that lives outside in hard sun. Budget vinyl is the part that ages, and it ages fastest in UV.
| Construction | Dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Crossbars | Pre-assembled horizontal crossbars that fold with the cover |
| Install | Clamp-and-latch, no drilling |
| Locking | Lockable with the tailgate |
| Warranty | 5 years for US customers |

Common questions
How do I know if my F-150 has the 5.5 ft bed?
Measure it. From the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate along the floor, the 5.5 ft bed is around 67 inches and the 6.5 ft is around 79. Cab style is a hint rather than proof — SuperCrew F-150s have been sold with both.
What is the best tonneau cover for an F-150 5.5 ft bed?
The BAKFlip MX4 for most owners. If the bed does real work and you need it clear, the TruXedo TruXport is the better buy — on a short bed, the space a folded cover occupies is a much larger share of the total, and a roll-up is the only type that genuinely vacates it.
Will a 6.5 ft F-150 cover fit a 5.5 ft bed?
No. About twelve inches of material separates them and there is no adjustment that closes the gap. Order against the bed you measured.
Is a retractable cover a bad idea on a 5.5 ft bed?
Not bad, but the trade-off is sharper. The canister sits permanently at the bulkhead and cannot be folded away or removed, so on the shortest F-150 bed you give up a proportionally larger share. RETRAX does not publish canister dimensions, so you cannot plan around the loss before buying.
