The Best Tonneau Covers for the Toyota Tacoma
Two bed lengths, a factory rail system almost every Tacoma has, and a narrower cover selection than any half-ton.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Two beds: 5 ft and 6 ft. The 5 ft is the double-cab default and by far the more common.
The Tacoma-specific question is the deck rail system. Most Tacomas ship with factory utility rails along the bed wall tops. Some covers clamp over them, some need them off. Check the fitment notes.
Buy the BAKFlip MX4 by default, the RetraxONE XR if you run a bed rack — its integrated T-slot rails are the reason to accept its weaker numbers.
Tacoma generations and beds
| Generation | Years | Bed lengths sold | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fourth generation | 2024 onward | 5 ft, 6 ft | New bed and rail design - order against this generation specifically |
| Third generation | 2016-2023 | 5 ft, 6 ft | The widest aftermarket support of any Tacoma |
| Second generation | 2005-2015 | 5 ft, 6 ft | Still served, but the selection thins |
Bed lengths are the nominal figures manufacturers key their fitment charts to. Measure your own bed from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate and give the retailer that number - it is the one that has to be right.
Why there is no page for your model year
Searches for “tonneau cover tacoma 2026”, “2025”, “2024”, “2023”, “2022”, “2021”, “2020” and “2017” are all asking one thing: will this fit my truck? The table above answers it the way manufacturers publish fitment, by generation and bed length.
A page per model year would be eight near-identical pages giving the same answer and competing with each other for it. One table is both more useful and more honest.
The deck rail system
Toyota fits a utility rail system to most Tacoma beds — adjustable cleats sliding in a channel along the top of each bed wall. It is genuinely useful and it is exactly where a clamp-on tonneau cover wants to clamp.
Manufacturers handle this three ways: cover clamps over the rail, cover requires the rail removed, or cover is incompatible. Every maker publishes which applies, and on a Tacoma that note is the one you read before anything else on the page.
Which cover for a Tacoma
BAKFlip MX4 — the default
400 lb evenly distributed, 5-year warranty, published 30-minute no-drill clamp-on install, EPDM perimeter seals with integrated drainage. On a 5 ft bed the folded stack takes a proportionally bigger bite than it does on a half-ton, which is worth picturing before you buy.
RetraxONE XR — if you run a bed rack
Published integrated T-slot rails that take most third-party crossbars, cargo holders and bed tents. On a Tacoma, which is the truck most likely to carry a roof tent or a bike rack, that compatibility is the whole argument. Read the numbers first though: 200 lb and a one-year warranty, which are the weakest in our retractable group. Rack compatibility in full.
UnderCover UltraFlex — if you carry tall loads
The only cover in this registry rated to be driven with the cover folded open. On a short-bed Tacoma that regularly carries something taller than the rails, that rating is worth more than any other spec on this page.
TruXedo Lo Pro — if the look matters
Three-quarters of an inch above the bed rails, published, with a leather-grained vinyl finish and a limited lifetime defect warranty. On a Tacoma the flat profile suits the proportions better than a tall folding stack does.
Mid-size means a narrower selection
The Tacoma gets fewer retractable options than any half-ton, because the volume does not justify the tooling for every maker. If a specific retractable is what you want, check availability for your bed before you get attached to it — this is the main practical difference between shopping for a Tacoma and shopping for an F-150.
The picks in detail
#1 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#2 · Carrying tall loads often
UnderCover UltraFlex
UnderCover · Hard folding
The folding cover built to be driven open: it folds to the cab and the maker states you can drive that way, which is the single most useful thing a folding cover can offer a person hauling tall loads.
What it does well
- Rated to be driven with the cover folded open — most folding covers simply do not say this
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating with a 5-year warranty behind it
- Polymer core gives the panel more dent resistance than a hollow aluminum skin
Where it gives way
- Folded to the cab it still consumes bed length, driving or parked
- UnderCover's warranty specifically rules out rear-towing the vehicle with the cover on — read it before you flat-tow
- Matte finish needs a dedicated protectant rather than wax
Skip it if: Towing from the rear with the cover fitted — UnderCover's own warranty says not to.
| Construction | Aluminum with a high-density polymer core |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None on most applications |
| Bed access | 100 percent, all the time — rated to drive folded open |

#3 · T-slot rack compatibility
RetraxONE XR
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The T-slot retractable at the accessible end of the RETRAX range. Read the two published numbers before you buy: 200 lb, and one year.
What it does well
- Integrated T-slot rails at the lowest price in the RETRAX retractable line
- Key-lockable in any position, the same as the more expensive models
- Polycarbonate deck is lighter than the PRO's double-wall aluminum
Where it gives way
- 200 lb rating — a quarter of what the Extang folding covers publish and under half the RetraxPRO MX
- One-year warranty, against limited lifetime on the RetraxPRO MX
- Canister cost in bed length is the same as the expensive models without the matching durability numbers
Skip it if: Carrying anything meaningful on top — 200 lb is less than half what the PRO models publish.
| Construction | Aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate, aluminum side rails and tracks |
|---|---|
| Finish | Premium textured matte black |
| Load rating | 200 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited hassle-free, 1 year from purchase |
| Locking | Key-lockable in any position, 2x key-lockable security |
| Rails | Integrated T-slot rails for racks, cargo holders, tents, crossbars |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on, no cutting or drilling |

#4 · A soft cover you keep
Extang Trifecta 2.0
Extang · Tri-fold (soft)
The soft tri-fold with the longest warranty: limited lifetime on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware and the vinyl itself, with adhesive-free snap-on seals instead of the stick-on strips cheap covers use.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime covering the vinyl as well as the frame — soft covers usually exclude the fabric
- Adhesive-free snap-on seals do not peel off in the sun the way stick-on strips do
- Tool-free install at Level 1 difficulty
Where it gives way
- Two-thirds bed access, where a roll-up gives you the whole bed
- Tri-fold geometry means the folded stack sits at the bulkhead taking height
- Still a soft cover — no load rating and no real security
Skip it if: Full bed access. Folded forward it gives two-thirds, and that is the published figure.
| Construction | Marine-grade tarp on an aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware and vinyl covering |
| Install difficulty | Level 1 — tool-free, no drilling |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when open |
| Sealing | Adhesive-free triple-fin snap-on seals |

#5 · A soft cover that sits flush
TruXedo Lo Pro
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The TruXport with the profile taken out of it: a published three-quarters of an inch above the rails, a leather-grained finish, and a limited lifetime warranty against defects.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime defect warranty — the longest coverage in this registry
- Three-quarters of an inch above the rails is a published figure and it looks it
- Rails mount inside the bed, so the bed rail caps stay visible
Where it gives way
- Nearly full access, not full — the rolled bundle and its buckles stay in the bed
- Soft cover, so the security story is the same as every soft cover: there isn't one
- An hour to fit rather than the TruXport's 30 minutes
Skip it if: Anyone expecting the whole bed clear. Rolled and buckled it gives nearly full access, not the TruXport's clean 100 percent.
| Construction | Industrial-grade tear-resistant vinyl, gloss-black powder-coated aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Leather-grained vinyl |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime against manufacturing and material defects |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour |
| Drilling | None — no-drill clamp-on mounting |
| Profile height | ¾ inch above the bed rails |
| Bed access | Roll to the bulkhead and buckle for nearly full access; tool-free removal |
Specifications read from RealTruck — TruXedo Lo Pro published specifications.

#6 · The lowest cost per year of use
Tyger Auto T3 Soft Tri-Fold
Tyger Auto · Tri-fold (soft)
The cheapest cover in this registry that still names its materials. Pre-assembled crossbars fold with the cover, which is the one design detail that separates a good budget tri-fold from a bad one.
What it does well
- Crossbars fold with the cover rather than needing to be lifted out — the detail that makes a budget tri-fold usable daily
- 24 oz dual-coated marine-grade vinyl is published, not vague
- Clamp-and-latch fit, no drilling, on a cover at the bottom of the market
Where it gives way
- Soft tri-fold access only — the folded stack lives at the bulkhead
- Vinyl at this price is the first thing to go; plan on a protectant routine
- Tailgate-dependent locking means an unlocked tailgate is an unlocked bed
Skip it if: A truck that lives outside in hard sun. Budget vinyl is the part that ages, and it ages fastest in UV.
| Construction | Dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Crossbars | Pre-assembled horizontal crossbars that fold with the cover |
| Install | Clamp-and-latch, no drilling |
| Locking | Lockable with the tailgate |
| Warranty | 5 years for US customers |

Common questions
What is the best tonneau cover for a Toyota Tacoma?
The BAKFlip MX4 for most Tacomas — 400 lb, a 5-year warranty and a published 30-minute no-drill install. If you run a bed rack or roof tent, the RetraxONE XR's integrated T-slot rails make it the better fit despite its weaker 200 lb rating and one-year warranty.
Will a tonneau cover work with the Tacoma's deck rail system?
Usually, but check the fitment note. Toyota's utility rails run along the top of the bed walls, which is where a clamp-on cover clamps. Manufacturers either clamp over the rail, require it removed, or do not support it — and they all publish which.
Does a 2026 Tacoma take the same tonneau cover as a 2022?
No. The fourth generation from 2024 has a new bed and rail design and is a separate fitment from the 2016-2023 third generation. Within a generation, the bed length decides the part number rather than the year.
What bed lengths does the Tacoma come in?
5 ft and 6 ft. The 5 ft bed is the double-cab default and much more common. Measure from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate and give the retailer that figure.
