The Best Tonneau Covers for the Ford Ranger
Two beds, two generations the aftermarket treats separately, and an install that genuinely is a half-hour job if you read the step people skip.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Two beds: 5 ft and 6 ft. The 5 ft is the SuperCrew default.
The 2019-2023 Ranger and the 2024-onward Ranger are separate fitments. Order against the right generation.
The install step people skip: setting the rails square and checking the gap at both ends before final-tightening the clamps.
Ranger generations and beds
| Generation | Years | Bed lengths sold | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current generation | 2024 onward | 5 ft, 6 ft | New bed design - a separate fitment from the previous truck |
| Previous North American generation | 2019-2023 | 5 ft, 6 ft | Broad aftermarket support |
Bed lengths are the nominal figures manufacturers key their fitment charts to. Measure your own bed from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate and give the retailer that number - it is the one that has to be right.
How the install actually goes
Every cover in this list is published as a no-drill clamp-on fit, and the published times are honest: 30 minutes for the BAKFlip MX4 and the TruXport, under an hour for the rest. The job is genuinely within reach of anyone who can use a wrench.
The step that goes wrong is squaring the rails. Both rails must sit the same distance from the bed walls at both ends before you tighten anything properly. Rush that and the cover will not latch at one corner, or it will latch under tension and wear its seal unevenly.
The sequence that works
- Clean the bed rail tops properly — grit under a clamp is a future leak.
- Set both rails, snug the clamps by hand only, and measure the gap to the bed wall at the front and rear of each rail. Adjust until they match.
- Fit the cover and close it before final-tightening, so you latch against the real geometry.
- Tighten to the manufacturer's spec, not by feel.
- Re-check every clamp after the first week of driving. BAK publishes that advice explicitly and it applies to every clamp-on cover.
The full install guide covers this in more detail, including the drain tube routing people forget.
Which cover for a Ranger
BAKFlip MX4
400 lb, 5-year warranty, published 30-minute install, EPDM perimeter seals with integrated drainage. The default on a Ranger as everywhere else.
Extang Trifecta 2.0
Limited lifetime warranty covering the vinyl as well as the frame, adhesive-free triple-fin snap-on seals, tool-free Level 1 install. The soft cover to buy if you are keeping the truck.
Gator FX3
300 lb, drill-free install, auto-locking slam latches, EPDM seals and drain tubes, assembled in Missouri. The 2-year warranty is the catch; the 30-day exchange softens it.
Rough Country Low Profile
The cheapest hard panels here. Published cover weight of 69.30 lb for the Ranger 5-foot bed, aluminum panels on a powder-coated frame, drain tubes, 5-year warranty — and no published load rating, which you should treat as rated for nothing.
Two Rangers, two fitments
Ford replaced the Ranger for 2024 with a new bed. A cover sold for a 2019-2023 Ranger is not a safe bet on the current truck even in the same nominal bed length. Order against your model year's generation in the fitment selector.
The picks in detail
#1 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#2 · A soft cover you keep
Extang Trifecta 2.0
Extang · Tri-fold (soft)
The soft tri-fold with the longest warranty: limited lifetime on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware and the vinyl itself, with adhesive-free snap-on seals instead of the stick-on strips cheap covers use.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime covering the vinyl as well as the frame — soft covers usually exclude the fabric
- Adhesive-free snap-on seals do not peel off in the sun the way stick-on strips do
- Tool-free install at Level 1 difficulty
Where it gives way
- Two-thirds bed access, where a roll-up gives you the whole bed
- Tri-fold geometry means the folded stack sits at the bulkhead taking height
- Still a soft cover — no load rating and no real security
Skip it if: Full bed access. Folded forward it gives two-thirds, and that is the published figure.
| Construction | Marine-grade tarp on an aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware and vinyl covering |
| Install difficulty | Level 1 — tool-free, no drilling |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when open |
| Sealing | Adhesive-free triple-fin snap-on seals |

#3 · Full bed access on a budget
TruXedo TruXport
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.
What it does well
- Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
- 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
- Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box
Where it gives way
- Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
- Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
- Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks
Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.
| Construction | Vinyl over a clamp-on aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Bed access | 100 percent — rolls forward to the cab |
| Mounting | Clamp-on, vehicle-specific hardware included |

#4 · Entry-level hard folding
Gator FX3
Gator · Hard folding
Fiberglass-reinforced polymer panels with auto-locking slam latches and drain tubes, at the entry end of the hard folding class. The compromise is the warranty: two years.
What it does well
- Auto-locking slam latches engage without a second trip around the truck
- Dual-action rear seal and drain tubes at a price point where covers often skip both
- 30-day Gator exchange is unusual — if the cover is wrong for you, you are not stuck
Where it gives way
- 2-year warranty is the shortest in this registry
- 300 lb rating, same as the BAKFlip G2 and well under the Extang pair
- FRP panels are less dent-resistant than a thick TPO or foam-cored panel
Skip it if: Anyone who treats warranty length as the proxy for how long a cover lasts — two years is the shortest here.
| Construction | Fiberglass-reinforced polymer panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Semi-gloss textured black, low profile |
| Load rating | 300 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited 2-year against material defects, plus a 30-day exchange |
| Drilling | None — drill-free install |
| Bed access | Tri-fold with straps, or full access with prop rods |
| Sealing | Dual-action rear seal, EPDM seals and drain tubes |
| Assembly | Assembled in Missouri |

#5 · The lowest price in hard panels
Rough Country Hard Low Profile Bed Cover
Rough Country · Tri-fold (hard)
The cheapest aluminum-panel tri-fold worth listing: powder-coated aluminum frame, aluminum panels, drain tubes, 5-year warranty. Rough Country does not publish a load rating, and that absence is the honest headline.
What it does well
- Published per-bed cover weights, which most makers omit — 51.65 lb at 5'7" tells you it is a one-person lift
- 5-year warranty at a price where 1-2 years is normal
- Drain tubes included rather than sold as an upgrade
Where it gives way
- No published load rating at all — if you intend to put weight on the cover, buy something that states a number
- Published install and drilling details are thin
- Finish and hardware are built to the price; clamps need re-checking more often than premium covers
Skip it if: Anyone who needs to know what the cover will carry — there is no published load rating to go on.
| Construction | Aluminum panels, corrosion-resistant black powder-coated aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | Not published |
| Warranty | 5-year (certain models listed as limited lifetime) |
| Cover weight | 51.65 lb for the 5'7" bed; 59.50 lb for the 6'7" |
| Sealing | Track and rail mounting system with drain tubes |

Common questions
What is the best tonneau cover for a Ford Ranger?
The BAKFlip MX4 for most Rangers — 400 lb evenly distributed, a 5-year warranty and a published 30-minute no-drill clamp-on install. The Extang Trifecta 2.0 is the better soft-cover choice, with a limited lifetime warranty that covers the vinyl as well as the frame.
How do you install a tonneau cover on a Ford Ranger?
Clean the bed rail tops, set both rails and hand-snug the clamps, then measure the gap to the bed wall at the front and rear of each rail and adjust until they match. Fit and close the cover before final-tightening so you latch against the real geometry, tighten to the manufacturer's spec, and re-check every clamp after the first week.
Does a 2024 Ranger take the same tonneau cover as a 2022?
No. Ford replaced the Ranger for 2024 with a new bed design, and the aftermarket treats it as a separate fitment. Order against your model year's generation rather than relying on the nominal bed length matching.
What bed lengths does the Ford Ranger come in?
5 ft and 6 ft. The 5 ft bed is the SuperCrew default. Measure from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate and give the retailer that figure along with your model year.
