The Best Tonneau Covers for the GMC Sierra 1500
Shares a platform with the Silverado, but the MultiPro tailgate is a Sierra-specific question worth settling before you order.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
If your Sierra has the MultiPro tailgate, check the cover's fitment note. A multi-position tailgate with its own inner gate interacts with the cover's rear seal in ways a conventional tailgate does not.
Sierra and Silverado covers often interchange but not always. Order against the badge on your truck.
Buy the BAKFlip MX4 by default; the UnderCover ArmorFlex if you use the tailgate constantly.
Sierra 1500 generations and beds
| Generation | Years | Bed lengths sold | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current generation | 2019 onward | 5'8", 6'6", 8' | MultiPro tailgate available - check the fitment note |
| Previous generation | 2014-2018 | 5'8", 6'6", 8' | Conventional tailgate; broad aftermarket support |
| Sierra 2500HD / 3500HD | Separate fitment | 6'9", 8' | Different bed - see the HD pages |
Bed lengths are the nominal figures manufacturers key their fitment charts to. Measure your own bed from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate and give the retailer that number - it is the one that has to be right.
The MultiPro tailgate
GMC's MultiPro is a tailgate with an inner gate that opens independently, giving six configurations. It is genuinely clever and it is the main thing that distinguishes a Sierra from a Silverado at the back of the bed.
For a tonneau cover, the thing to establish is how the cover's rear seal sits against it and whether the cover has to be unlatched to use the inner gate. Manufacturers publish fitment notes covering MultiPro trucks; read yours before ordering, because a cover that forces you to unlatch before using a tailgate feature you bought the truck for is a daily irritation.
This is also why the UnderCover ArmorFlex earns its place on this page specifically. Its published dual-action tailgate seal lets the tailgate drop without unlatching the cover, which is the behavior you want on a truck with a tailgate you actually use.
Sierra and Silverado interchange
The two share a platform and most covers are tooled for both, frequently under a single part number listed against both trucks. “Most” is doing work in that sentence: some covers are listed for one and not the other, and trim-specific bed hardware differs.
The practical rule is simple. Order against your own badge in the retailer's fitment selector. Do not buy a Silverado-listed cover for a Sierra on the grounds that the trucks are the same, even though they usually are. The Silverado page carries the factory bed-rail notes that apply to both.
Which cover for a Sierra
BAKFlip MX4
400 lb, 5 years, published 30-minute no-drill install, EPDM seals and drainage.
UnderCover ArmorFlex
400 lb, 5-year limited (original owner, registration required), EPDM seals and drain tubes, and the dual-action tailgate seal that makes it the Sierra pick. Prop rods give full access; straps give the quick two-thirds position.
RetraxPRO MX
500 lb, limited lifetime, key-lockable at any position, independent of the tailgate — which on a MultiPro truck also means the cover's security does not depend on the more complicated tailgate mechanism.
LOMAX Stance
Extruded aluminum panels at a published half-inch above the bed rails, 400 lb, textured urethane finish, limited 3-year warranty. The flattest silhouette here if the Sierra's proportions are what you are protecting.
The picks in detail
#1 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#2 · Daily tailgate use
UnderCover ArmorFlex
UnderCover · Hard folding
Aluminum panels with UnderCover's Multi-Shield coating and a dual-action tailgate seal that lets the tailgate drop without unlatching the cover — a small thing you use every single day.
What it does well
- Dual-action tailgate seal means the tailgate drops without unlatching the cover first
- Prop rods give a genuine full-access position rather than only the two-thirds strap position
- Multi-Shield coating is specifically an abrasion and impact claim, not just a color
Where it gives way
- Warranty is original-owner only and needs registering — it does not follow the truck
- Two-thirds access is the quick position; full access needs the prop rods set up
- Assembled in Missouri but published spec sheets omit cover weight
Skip it if: Buyers who want a transferable warranty. Published coverage is original-owner only and requires registration.
| Construction | Aluminum panels with Multi-Shield coating |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black textured |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited, original owner only, registration required |
| Stated install time | Under 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None on most vehicles |
| Bed access | Two-thirds via straps, or full with integrated prop rods |
| Sealing | EPDM seals, integrated drain tubes, dual-action tailgate seal |

#3 · A retractable that will outlast the truck
RetraxPRO MX
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
- Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
- Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story
Where it gives way
- The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
- Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
- Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating
Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.
| Construction | Double-wall aluminum slats |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime, non-transferable |
| Locking | Key-lockable TraxLatch handle, infinite locking positions |
| Stated install time | Less than 60 minutes |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on rails, four quick-attach clamps |
| Temperature tested | -40°F to 180°F |
| Sealing | Integrated water management with drain tubes |
| Origin | Assembled in Grand Forks, North Dakota |

#4 · Carrying load on top of the cover
Extang Solid Fold ALX
Extang · Hard folding
The highest published load rating in this roundup at 600 lb, on inch-thick TPO panels in an aluminum frame, with tool-free clamps and a five-year warranty.
What it does well
- 600 lb published rating is the highest here by 200 lb — the one cover in the group you can actually plan to load
- Inch-thick TPO panels are substantially more rigid than a thin aluminum skin
- Tool-free clamps, and removable without tools when you need the whole bed
Where it gives way
- Folded, access is two-thirds — the full-bed answer is taking the cover off, not folding it further
- Panel thickness means more weight to lift off than a thin folding cover
- Warranty text covers rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware; the panel itself is described separately
Skip it if: Anyone who needs more than two-thirds of the bed open at once without pulling the cover off the truck.
| Construction | 1-inch EnduraShield TPO panels, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 600 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None — tool-free Jaw-Grip clamps |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when folded; removable without tools for full access |
| Sealing | Triple-fin perimeter seals |

#5 · Full bed access on a budget
TruXedo TruXport
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.
What it does well
- Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
- 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
- Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box
Where it gives way
- Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
- Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
- Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks
Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.
| Construction | Vinyl over a clamp-on aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Bed access | 100 percent — rolls forward to the cab |
| Mounting | Clamp-on, vehicle-specific hardware included |
Specifications read from RealTruck — TruXedo TruXport (Gen 2) published specifications.

#6 · The lowest profile
LOMAX Stance Hard Tri-Fold
LOMAX · Tri-fold (hard)
The flattest cover here: extruded aluminum panels sitting a published half-inch above the bed rails, carrying 400 lb. If the silhouette matters to you, this is the one.
What it does well
- Half an inch above the rails is a published figure, and it is the flattest in this registry
- Extruded aluminum panels rather than a folded skin — stiffer per millimeter of thickness
- Textured urethane finish wears better than paint on a surface people lean on
Where it gives way
- 3-year warranty where the class leaders publish 5
- LOMAX does not publish an install time or a drilling answer, so you are relying on the retailer listing
- The low profile leaves very little room for anything proud of the bed rails underneath
Skip it if: Buyers comparing warranties — three years, against five from BAK, Extang and UnderCover.
| Construction | Extruded aluminum panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Heavy-duty textured urethane |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited 3-year |
| Profile height | Sits ½ inch above the bed rails |
| Stated install time | Not published |

Common questions
What is the best tonneau cover for a GMC Sierra 1500?
The BAKFlip MX4 for most Sierras. If your truck has the MultiPro tailgate and you use it, the UnderCover ArmorFlex is the better buy — its published dual-action tailgate seal lets the tailgate drop without unlatching the cover first.
Will a tonneau cover work with the MultiPro tailgate?
Most do, but check the manufacturer's fitment note for your specific cover. The question to settle is whether the cover has to be unlatched before you can use the inner gate — a cover that forces that is a daily irritation on a truck bought partly for the tailgate.
Do Sierra and Silverado tonneau covers interchange?
Usually, since the trucks share a platform and most covers are tooled for both. Not always, though — some covers are listed for one and not the other, and trim-specific bed hardware differs. Order against your own badge in the retailer's fitment selector.
What bed lengths does the Sierra 1500 come in?
Roughly 5'8", 6'6" and 8' across the current and previous generations, the same as the Silverado 1500. The 5'8" short bed is the crew-cab default.
