Gifts for a New Truck Owner
A new truck arrives with an empty, uncovered, unprotected bed. That gap is the gift.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
A new truck comes with nothing in the bed. No cover, no bed security, no weather protection. That gap is the clearest gift opportunity here.
Still need the two answers: bed length and model year. On a brand new truck the model year is easy, which leaves one question.
A first cover should be easy and reversible. A 30-minute no-drill soft roll-up is the right first purchase for most new owners.
What a new truck does not come with
A pickup leaves the dealer with a bed that is completely open to weather, completely visible to anyone walking past, and with no provision for securing anything. That is normal and it is also the gap every truck owner ends up filling.
A new owner has not filled it yet, has just spent a great deal of money on the truck, and is unlikely to be shopping for accessories for a while. That combination makes this the best-timed gift in this whole category.
Why a soft roll-up is the right first cover
Three reasons, and they are all about a first-time owner specifically.
- It does not commit them. A new owner does not yet know how they will use the bed. A soft roll-up is cheap enough that discovering they wanted something else later is not an expensive mistake — and it rolls fully forward, so it does not restrict them while they find out.
- It is an easy first install. TruXedo publishes 30 minutes or less for the TruXport, no cutting, drilling or modifications, with vehicle-specific hardware in the box. On a brand-new truck nobody wants to be drilling anything.
- It teaches them what they actually want. Six months of living with a covered bed tells somebody whether they need security, more bed access, or a load rating — far better than guessing on day one.
If you want to spend more
The BAKFlip MX4 is the cover this site recommends most often: 400 lb evenly distributed, 5-year warranty, a published 30-minute no-drill clamp-on install, and revised EPDM perimeter seals with integrated drainage. It is a significantly better object than a soft cover and it is still a no-drill, reversible install on a new truck.
The thing to think about before buying it as a gift: a folded hard cover occupies roughly the front third of the bed. If the new owner bought the truck to haul long things, a soft roll-up is genuinely the better gift despite costing less — hard against soft.
The fitment-free options
On a brand-new truck you probably know the model year, which leaves bed length as the only unknown. If you cannot get that without giving the game away:
A BOLT one-key lock
Only useful if they already have a cover with a replaceable cylinder, so this is the gift for the second occasion rather than the first. Codes permanently to the truck's ignition key, limited lifetime warranty, fits many Ford, RAM, Toyota, Nissan and GM trucks.
A UV protectant
Works for any truck with a vinyl cover, and new owners are exactly the people who have not thought about vinyl care yet. 303 Aerospace publishes SPF 40 and is specifically listed for tonneau cover use. Small, inexpensive, and the kind of thing that is genuinely useful rather than politely received.
What not to buy a new truck owner
- Anything that needs drilling. On a new truck this is close to unforgivable. Fortunately every cover in this registry publishes a no-drill fit on most applications.
- A retractable. The canister permanently takes bed length. That is a decision a new owner should make for themselves once they know how they use the bed.
- Anything you guessed the bed length on. Still the most common return in this category — four minutes to get it right.
A note on timing
If the truck has not arrived yet, wait. Dealer-installed accessories, trim-level differences and factory bed options like RamBox or a utility rail system all affect which cover fits, and none of them are confirmed until the truck is on the driveway.
The picks in detail
#1 · Full bed access on a budget
TruXedo TruXport
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.
What it does well
- Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
- 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
- Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box
Where it gives way
- Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
- Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
- Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks
Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.

#2 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#3 · One key for the whole truck
BOLT One-Key Tonneau Lock
BOLT Lock · Accessory
A replacement lock cylinder that codes itself to your truck's ignition key the first time you turn it, so the cover opens with the key already in your pocket.
What it does well
- Removes a key from your ring without reducing security
- Limited lifetime warranty on a part that costs a fraction of a cover
- Covers the awkward GM center-cut high-security key, which many aftermarket locks do not
Where it gives way
- Permanent coding — once set to a truck it stays set
- Only helps if your cover takes a replaceable cylinder
- No benefit at all if the cover already locks with the tailgate
Skip it if: Anyone who sells trucks often. The coding is permanent — the lock cannot be re-keyed to a different vehicle.
| Mechanism | Spring-loaded plate tumblers code to the first key inserted |
|---|---|
| Coding | Permanent — one vehicle only, cannot be re-coded or re-keyed |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime |
| Fitment | Many Ford, RAM, Toyota, Nissan and GM light trucks, including GM center-cut high-security keys |
| Factory use | Fitted as standard on UnderCover Elite, Elite LX and Extang Encore |

#4 · Keeping vinyl alive
303 Aerospace Protectant
303 Products · Accessory
The UV protectant the vinyl-cover makers keep pointing at. Published SPF 40, specifically listed for tonneau covers, and the cheapest thing you can do to stop a soft cover chalking.
What it does well
- Published SPF 40 rather than an unquantified 'UV protection' claim
- Explicitly listed for tonneau cover use by the manufacturer
- Months per application, so it is a two-or-three-times-a-year job, not a weekly one
Where it gives way
- Has to be wiped completely dry or it streaks
- Does nothing for a hard aluminum or TPO cover
- Will not reverse vinyl that has already chalked — it is prevention only
Skip it if: Aluminum or TPO hard panels, which have their own coatings and do not need it.
| Protection | SPF 40 UV protection — the highest claimed by any surface protectant |
|---|---|
| Surfaces | Vinyl, rubber, plastic, leather, fiberglass |
| Application | Spray and wipe completely dry, out of direct sun |
| Interval | Each application stated to last for months |
| Finish | No greasy residue; repels water and dirt |

Common questions
What should you buy someone who just got a new truck?
A tonneau cover, if they do not have one — a new pickup leaves the dealer with a bed completely open to weather and visible to anyone passing, and a new owner has just spent a lot of money and is unlikely to be shopping for accessories. A soft roll-up like the TruXedo TruXport is the right first cover: cheap, 30 minutes to fit, no drilling, and it does not commit them to anything.
Should I buy a hard or soft tonneau cover as a gift for a new truck owner?
Soft, unless you know how they will use the bed. A first-time owner does not yet know either, and a soft roll-up is cheap enough that changing their mind later is not expensive — plus it rolls fully forward, so it does not restrict them while they find out.
Can I buy a tonneau cover before the truck arrives?
Better to wait. Dealer-installed accessories, trim differences and factory bed options like RamBox or a utility rail system all affect which cover fits, and none of them are confirmed until the truck is actually on the driveway.
What truck gift does not need to fit a specific bed?
A UV protectant works on any vinyl cover and new owners have usually not thought about vinyl care. A BOLT one-key lock fits many Ford, RAM, Toyota, Nissan and GM trucks, though it only helps if they already have a cover with a replaceable cylinder.
