Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Both publish 400 lb and a 5-year warranty. The TruXedo warranty explicitly covers the fabric as well as the hard parts; BAK's is published as not transferable.
MX4 comes off the truck. Sentry CT does not, easily.
Sentry CT latches up to six times automatically. MX4 closes to the tailgate.
Published figures
| BAKFlip MX4 | TruXedo Sentry CT | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Hard folding | Hard roll-up |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years, not transferable | 5-year limited, hard parts and fabric |
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced panels | Interlocking aluminum slats, 5-layer 120-grade canvas |
| Latching | Clamp-and-latch, closes to the tailgate | Level-2 locks, tension cable, up to 6 auto latches |
| Install | 30 minutes or less | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 |
| Open | Panel stack at the cab; removable from the truck | Slat bundle at the bulkhead; part of the install |
Both are no-drill clamp-on fits. The Sentry CT is published as made in America and the MX4 as a BAK Industries product; neither publishes a cover weight.
Latching: Sentry CT, clearly
TruXedo publishes up to six latches that engage automatically as the cover closes, plus level-2 locks and a tension cable. You close it and it is secured along its length without walking the bed.
The MX4 is a good cover that closes to the tailgate. That means your tailgate lock is doing part of the security work, and on a truck with a worn or easily defeated tailgate lock, that matters. The locking comparison in full.
Removability: MX4, clearly
The MX4 unclamps and lifts off, which is the folding class's structural advantage. When you need the entire bed for a refrigerator, you get the entire bed.
The Sentry CT's slat bundle and its housing are part of the installation. You are not taking it off for an afternoon.
Warranty: a real distinction
Both are five years, but they are not the same five years. TruXedo publishes coverage of the hard parts and the fabric — the canvas over the slats is the Sentry CT's wear item and it is explicitly included. BAK publishes the MX4's coverage as not transferable, so it ends if you sell the truck.
The verdict
Genuinely close. Both are well-specified covers at the same rating from manufacturers with real warranty infrastructure.
Buy the MX4 if you will ever want the cover off the truck, if you want the shortest install, or if the textured aluminum look is what you are after.
Buy the Sentry CT if security is why you are buying a cover at all, if you want to open the bed by an arbitrary amount rather than in panel-sized steps, or if the fabric being under warranty matters to you.
The picks in detail
#1 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#2 · Security without losing the roll
TruXedo Sentry CT
TruXedo · Roll-up (hard)
Interlocking aluminum slats under a five-layer canvas skin: a 400 lb rating and up to six auto-engaging latches in a cover that still rolls up instead of folding.
What it does well
- 400 lb rating on a roll-up, which usually means a folding cover or nothing
- Up to six latches that engage automatically — no walking the bed to lock each one
- Warranty explicitly covers the fabric as well as the hard parts, which soft covers rarely do
Where it gives way
- The rolled slat bundle permanently occupies the front of the bed
- An hour to fit, where a soft roll-up is thirty minutes
- Canvas over slats is more surface to keep clean than a plain aluminum panel
Skip it if: Anyone who assumes a hard roll-up gives a clear bed. Rolled up, the slat bundle sits at the bulkhead and stays there.
| Construction | Interlocking aluminum slats with RTxTechWeave 5-layer, 120-grade canvas |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited, covering hard parts and fabric |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Locking | Level-2 locks, tension cable, up to 6 auto-engaging latches |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on with no-drill self-leveling rails |
| Origin | Made in America |

Common questions
Is the BAKFlip MX4 or TruXedo Sentry CT more secure?
The Sentry CT. TruXedo publishes level-2 locks, a tension cable and up to six latches that engage automatically on closing. The MX4 closes to the tailgate, which makes your tailgate lock part of the security chain.
Can you remove a TruXedo Sentry CT like a BAKFlip MX4?
Not easily. The Sentry CT's slat bundle and housing are part of the installation, where the MX4 unclamps and lifts off in minutes. If you ever need the entire bed clear, that is the deciding difference.
Do the MX4 and Sentry CT have the same warranty?
Both are five years, but not identical. TruXedo's covers the fabric as well as the hard parts, which matters because the canvas is the Sentry CT's wear item. BAK publishes the MX4's coverage as not transferable, so it ends when you sell the truck.
Which one has the better bed access?
Different rather than better. The MX4 folds to a stack at the cab for 100 percent reach, and comes off entirely when you need the bed clear. The Sentry CT rolls to a bundle at the bulkhead and opens by any amount you like rather than in panel-sized steps.
