Tonneau Cover vs Truck Cap

These are not two versions of the same thing. One keeps the bed flat and covered; the other turns it into a room.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.

What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.

The short answer

A truck cap adds enclosed volume above the bed rails. A tonneau cover covers the bed flat. They are different products for different problems.

Buy a cap if you need to carry tall things dry and locked, sleep in the bed, or run a dog or a mobile workshop back there.

Buy a cover for everything else — and note that covers are the reversible choice.

What each one actually is

A tonneau cover sits at bed-rail height and closes the bed from above. The truck keeps its silhouette, the bed keeps its height, and you keep the ability to carry something taller than the rails by opening or removing the cover.

A truck cap — also called a canopy, topper or camper shell — is a rigid enclosure that sits on the bed rails and adds roughly cab-height volume above them, usually with side windows and a lifting rear glass. The bed becomes an enclosed, lockable space.

Where each one wins

Tonneau coverTruck cap
Volume addedNone - the bed stays the bedSubstantial, up to roughly cab height
Weather sealingWater-resistant; leaks at bulkhead and tailgateFully enclosed; a genuinely dry space

Tall loadsOpen or remove the coverLimited by the cap - this is the cap's trade
ReversibilityComes off in minutes on most folding coversA job, and often a two-person one

Figures for covers are the published specifications in our registry. Cap figures are general characteristics of the product type - we do not review caps and do not publish specifications for them.

When the cap is the right answer

  • You carry tall things that must stay dry. Tools standing upright, boxes stacked, bikes vertical. A cover cannot do this at all.
  • You sleep in the bed. Camping out of a truck is the cap's home ground.
  • A dog travels in the back. A cap is an enclosed, ventilated space; a covered bed is not.
  • You run a trade out of the truck and need shelving, standing storage and genuinely dry access in any weather.

When the cover is the right answer

  • You want the truck to stay a truck. Open bed when you need it, covered when you do not.
  • You carry flat loads. Groceries, luggage, bags of material, tools in boxes.
  • You want it reversible. Most hard folding covers come off in minutes; Extang publishes the Encore as attaching or removing in seconds.
  • You want to spend less and fit it yourself. Every cover in our registry publishes a no-drill clamp-on install of an hour or less.

On fuel economy, briefly

People sometimes choose between the two on aerodynamics, and the honest position is that the published evidence for covers is already weak and contradictory — a wind-tunnel study reporting just under an estimated 2 percent fuel improvement, a road test reporting 7.7 percent, and a Consumer Reports road test reporting a 4 percent loss. We have no comparable published data for caps, so we are not going to compare them on that basis. The cover evidence, tabled.

This site covers one of these two products

Cover & Cargo is about tonneau covers. We do not review truck caps, do not publish specifications for them, and have no cap recommendations to give you — which is also why there are no cap affiliate links on this page. This comparison exists because it is a real decision, not because we want to sell you the cover.

The picks in detail

#1 · Most truck owners

BAKFlip MX4

BAK Industries · Hard folding

The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.

Security8.5
Weather sealing8.5
Bed access8.0
Install effort9.0
Durability8.5
Value8.0
8.4overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
  • The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
  • Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
  • 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket

Where it gives way

  • Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
  • Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
  • No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker

Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.

#2 · A retractable that will outlast the truck

RetraxPRO MX

RETRAX · Retractable (manual)

The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.

Security9.0
Weather sealing8.5
Bed access8.5
Install effort7.5
Durability9.0
Value7.0
8.4overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
  • Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
  • Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story

Where it gives way

  • The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
  • Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
  • Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating

Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.

#3 · Full bed access on a budget

TruXedo TruXport

TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)

The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.

Security4.0
Weather sealing6.5
Bed access9.5
Install effort9.5
Durability6.5
Value9.0
7.6overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
  • 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
  • Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box

Where it gives way

  • Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
  • Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
  • Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks

Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.

Common questions

Should I get a tonneau cover or a truck cap?

A cap if you need to carry tall things dry and locked, sleep in the bed, carry a dog back there, or run a trade out of the truck. A cover for everything else — flat loads, keeping the truck's silhouette, and the ability to take the cover off in minutes when you need the open bed.

Is a truck cap more secure than a tonneau cover?

Generally yes in the sense that it is a fully enclosed lockable space, though the side and rear glass are its weak points. A good retractable cover like the RetraxPRO MX, which locks at any position independently of the tailgate, closes much of that gap for flat loads.

Can you put a tonneau cover on and take it off easily?

Most hard folding covers, yes — they unclamp and lift off in a few minutes, and Extang publishes the Encore as attaching or removing in seconds without tools. A cap is a job, and usually a two-person one. Reversibility is one of the cover's main advantages.

Does a truck cap or a tonneau cover help fuel economy more?

We will not compare them on that, because we have no published cap data to cite. The published evidence for covers alone is contradictory — a wind-tunnel study reporting under 2 percent improvement, one road test reporting 7.7 percent, and a Consumer Reports road test reporting a 4 percent loss.
