The Best Tonneau Covers for the Ford F-150
Three bed lengths, two current generations, and the widest cover selection of any truck sold. Start with the bed, not the badge.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Measure your bed first. The F-150 is sold with roughly 5.5, 6.5 and 8 foot beds, and the cover part number changes with all three. This is the single most common reason an F-150 cover goes back.
Buy the BAKFlip MX4 for most F-150s — 400 lb, 5 years, a 30-minute no-drill fit. The RetraxPRO MX if security is the point, the TruXedo TruXport if bed access and price are.
An F-150 Lightning is not an F-150 for fitment purposes. It has its own page.
F-150 generations and beds
| Generation | Years | Bed lengths sold | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fourteenth generation | 2021 onward | 5.5 ft, 6.5 ft, 8 ft | The current cover-fitment reference for new F-150s |
| Thirteenth generation | 2015-2020 | 5.5 ft, 6.5 ft, 8 ft | Aluminum body; cover fitment is still bed-length driven |
| F-150 Lightning | 2022 onward | 5.5 ft | Treated as a separate fitment by the aftermarket |
Bed lengths are the nominal figures manufacturers key their fitment charts to. Measure your own bed from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate and give the retailer that number - it is the one that has to be right.
Why the F-150 has the best cover selection of any truck
Volume. It is the best-selling pickup in the United States by a wide margin, which means every manufacturer in this category tools a part number for it first and frequently offers variants nobody bothers to make for smaller-selling trucks.
Practically, that means two things for you. Every cover in our registry is sold for the F-150 in at least one bed length, so you are choosing on merit rather than availability. And competition at this fitment is the fiercest in the category, which is good for pricing.
Which cover for which F-150 owner
The default: BAKFlip MX4
400 lb evenly distributed, a 5-year warranty, a published 30-minute no-drill clamp-on install, EPDM perimeter seals the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage, and 100 percent bed access folded against the cab. It is not the cheapest and not the most secure, but on an F-150 it is the cover with the fewest reasons to regret it.
If tools live in the bed: RetraxPRO MX
500 lb, limited lifetime warranty, key-lockable at any position along the bed, and published as operating independently of the tailgate. The cost is a canister at the bulkhead that never comes off. On a 5.5 ft bed that loss is proportionally larger than on an 8 ft, which is worth weighing before you commit.
If you carry tall loads: UnderCover UltraFlex
The only cover in this registry rated to be driven with the cover folded open. On an F-150 that regularly moves tall freight, nothing else in the folding class makes that claim. Note UnderCover's published warranty line about not towing the vehicle from the rear with the cover on.
If you want the bed clear: TruXedo TruXport
Rolls completely forward for genuine 100 percent bed access, fits in a published 30 minutes, carries a 5-year warranty. No security, no load rating — on an F-150 hauling mulch and lumber, neither matters.
The three F-150 bed lengths, and why guessing fails
A 5.5 ft and a 6.5 ft F-150 cover differ by about twelve inches of material. There is no adjustment, no universal fit, and no way to tell which bed you have from the trim badge. Measure from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate along the floor, and give the retailer that number. Full method, or go straight to the 5.5 ft page, the 6.5 ft page or the 8 ft page.
About model years
People search for “tonneau cover f150 2026”, “2024”, “2021” and every year between, and it is one question: does this fit my truck? The table above answers it by generation, which is how manufacturers publish fitment. A cover sold for the fourteenth generation fits a 2021 and a 2026 alike, provided the bed length matches.
By cover type, if you already know what you want
- Hard folding — the widest F-150 selection and the mainstream choice
- Roll-up — soft and hard, the only type that clears the bed
- Retractable — the best lock available, at the cost of bed length
- Budget — what gets cut at the cheap end
The picks in detail
#1 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#2 · A retractable that will outlast the truck
RetraxPRO MX
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
- Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
- Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story
Where it gives way
- The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
- Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
- Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating
Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.
| Construction | Double-wall aluminum slats |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime, non-transferable |
| Locking | Key-lockable TraxLatch handle, infinite locking positions |
| Stated install time | Less than 60 minutes |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on rails, four quick-attach clamps |
| Temperature tested | -40°F to 180°F |
| Sealing | Integrated water management with drain tubes |
| Origin | Assembled in Grand Forks, North Dakota |

#3 · Carrying tall loads often
UnderCover UltraFlex
UnderCover · Hard folding
The folding cover built to be driven open: it folds to the cab and the maker states you can drive that way, which is the single most useful thing a folding cover can offer a person hauling tall loads.
What it does well
- Rated to be driven with the cover folded open — most folding covers simply do not say this
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating with a 5-year warranty behind it
- Polymer core gives the panel more dent resistance than a hollow aluminum skin
Where it gives way
- Folded to the cab it still consumes bed length, driving or parked
- UnderCover's warranty specifically rules out rear-towing the vehicle with the cover on — read it before you flat-tow
- Matte finish needs a dedicated protectant rather than wax
Skip it if: Towing from the rear with the cover fitted — UnderCover's own warranty says not to.
| Construction | Aluminum with a high-density polymer core |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None on most applications |
| Bed access | 100 percent, all the time — rated to drive folded open |

#4 · Carrying load on top of the cover
Extang Solid Fold ALX
Extang · Hard folding
The highest published load rating in this roundup at 600 lb, on inch-thick TPO panels in an aluminum frame, with tool-free clamps and a five-year warranty.
What it does well
- 600 lb published rating is the highest here by 200 lb — the one cover in the group you can actually plan to load
- Inch-thick TPO panels are substantially more rigid than a thin aluminum skin
- Tool-free clamps, and removable without tools when you need the whole bed
Where it gives way
- Folded, access is two-thirds — the full-bed answer is taking the cover off, not folding it further
- Panel thickness means more weight to lift off than a thin folding cover
- Warranty text covers rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware; the panel itself is described separately
Skip it if: Anyone who needs more than two-thirds of the bed open at once without pulling the cover off the truck.
| Construction | 1-inch EnduraShield TPO panels, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 600 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None — tool-free Jaw-Grip clamps |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when folded; removable without tools for full access |
| Sealing | Triple-fin perimeter seals |
Specifications read from RealTruck — Extang Solid Fold ALX published specifications.

#5 · Full bed access on a budget
TruXedo TruXport
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.
What it does well
- Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
- 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
- Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box
Where it gives way
- Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
- Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
- Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks
Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.
| Construction | Vinyl over a clamp-on aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Bed access | 100 percent — rolls forward to the cab |
| Mounting | Clamp-on, vehicle-specific hardware included |

#6 · The lowest cost per year of use
Tyger Auto T3 Soft Tri-Fold
Tyger Auto · Tri-fold (soft)
The cheapest cover in this registry that still names its materials. Pre-assembled crossbars fold with the cover, which is the one design detail that separates a good budget tri-fold from a bad one.
What it does well
- Crossbars fold with the cover rather than needing to be lifted out — the detail that makes a budget tri-fold usable daily
- 24 oz dual-coated marine-grade vinyl is published, not vague
- Clamp-and-latch fit, no drilling, on a cover at the bottom of the market
Where it gives way
- Soft tri-fold access only — the folded stack lives at the bulkhead
- Vinyl at this price is the first thing to go; plan on a protectant routine
- Tailgate-dependent locking means an unlocked tailgate is an unlocked bed
Skip it if: A truck that lives outside in hard sun. Budget vinyl is the part that ages, and it ages fastest in UV.
| Construction | Dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Crossbars | Pre-assembled horizontal crossbars that fold with the cover |
| Install | Clamp-and-latch, no drilling |
| Locking | Lockable with the tailgate |
| Warranty | 5 years for US customers |

Common questions
What is the best tonneau cover for an F-150?
The BAKFlip MX4 for most owners — 400 lb evenly distributed, a 5-year warranty, a published 30-minute no-drill clamp-on install, and revised EPDM perimeter seals with integrated drainage. The RetraxPRO MX is better if security is the priority; the TruXedo TruXport if bed access and price are.
What bed lengths does the Ford F-150 come in?
Roughly 5.5, 6.5 and 8 feet across the current and previous generations. The cover part number changes with the bed, and the difference between a 5.5 and a 6.5 ft cover is about twelve inches of material. Measure from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate before ordering.
Will an F-150 tonneau cover fit an F-150 Lightning?
Not reliably. The aftermarket treats the Lightning as a separate fitment because the bodywork and available power sources differ from the gas trucks. Order against the Lightning specifically rather than against an F-150 of the same bed length.
Does my F-150 model year change which cover fits?
It changes which generation you are ordering against. A cover sold for the fourteenth generation covers 2021 onward; the thirteenth generation covers 2015-2020. Within a generation, bed length is what decides the part number, not the year.
