RETRAX Tonneau Covers: Review and Known Problems

The most complete published specification of any cover here, a range that varies wildly, and a mechanism with documented failure modes.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.

What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.

The short answer

The RetraxPRO MX is the most completely specified cover in this registry. 500 lb, limited lifetime, independent locking, -40°F to 180°F testing, assembled in North Dakota.

The range gap is enormous. The RetraxONE XR publishes 200 lb and a one-year warranty under the same brand.

The documented problems are mechanism problems — shifted slats, friction-lock wear, powered-operation faults.

The range

RETRAX covers in this registry
CoverOperationRatingWarranty
RetraxPRO MXManual, double-wall aluminum slats500 lbLimited lifetime, non-transferable
PowertraxPRO XRElectric, remote, electromagnetic brake500 lb3 years, then prorated lifetime
RetraxONE XRManual, aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate200 lb1 year

Note the spread. These three share a brand, a mechanism concept and T-slot compatibility, and almost nothing else on the spec sheet.

What RETRAX does well

Publishing

The RetraxPRO MX publishes a load rating, a warranty, locking behavior, install time, clamp count, drainage, assembly location and a tested temperature range from -40°F to 180°F. No other cover in this registry publishes that much.

Lock independence

RETRAX publishes the PRO MX as operating independently of the tailgate, with a key-lockable TraxLatch handle at infinite positions along the bed. That combination is the single strongest security specification in this registry — the locking comparison.

T-slot rails

Both XR models publish integrated T-slot rails accepting most third-party crossbars, cargo holders and bed tents. That is a genuine ecosystem rather than a proprietary dead end. Rack compatibility.

Known problems

How this section is built

No aggregate claim without at least two cited sources. Where we found only isolated reports, the page says so and labels it anecdote rather than a pattern. Forum threads are owner reports, not verified failure rates — they tell you what some owners experienced, not how common it is. Our sourcing standards in full.

Shifted slats and binding

A dedicated write-up of common Retrax bed cover problems reports a slat getting out of place and binding, preventing the cover from opening, and reports covers jumping the track during off-road use. A Ranger forum owner thread on the RetraxONE XR carries related mechanism discussion.

How to read this: a retractable is a mechanism in a channel, and anything in that channel causes binding. Keeping the channels clear is not optional maintenance on this type — troubleshooting.

Friction-lock wear

The same source reports the lock-anywhere function using a friction lock that wears over time and can tear into the aluminum rails, and that after several years some covers no longer hold at partial positions and fully retract while driving.

This is a single-source report rather than a cross-source pattern, so treat it as anecdote. It is specific enough to be worth checking on a used cover: open it halfway, lock it, and see whether it holds.

Powered operation faults

An etrailer customer question documents a Retrax powered cover not opening fully with the remote. That is one reported case, not a pattern, but it is the failure mode you would expect from the powered models and it is a reason the manual version is the better buy for most people.

Hardware and sealing

The same problems write-up reports plastic retaining hardware stripping, hardware rusting into place, and a need to tug the opposite side at the tailgate to seal fully on some units. Single-source; treat as anecdote.

The spec RETRAX will not publish

Canister dimensions, on any model. That is the figure that would let you size the permanent bed-length cost before buying a retractable, and it is the one thing missing from an otherwise complete specification. If it matters to you, measure a fitted example or ask the retailer.

Which RETRAX to buy

The RetraxPRO MX, for almost everyone. Same 500 lb rating as the powered model, a straight limited lifetime warranty rather than three years then prorated, double-wall aluminum slats rather than polycarbonate, and no motor to fail.

The PowertraxPRO XR only if you genuinely want remote operation daily. The RetraxONE XR only if T-slot rails at the lowest RETRAX price is specifically your constraint — the two XR models compared.

The picks in detail

#1 · A retractable that will outlast the truck

RETRAX · Retractable (manual)

The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.

What it does well

  • Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
  • Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
  • Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story

Where it gives way

  • The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
  • Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
  • Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating

Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.

#2 · Opening the bed without touching it

RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR

RETRAX · Retractable (electric)

The electric retractable to beat: 500 lb rating, remote operation with an electromagnetic brake so it stops anywhere, and T-slot rails that take most third-party rack accessories.

Security9.0
Weather sealing8.5
Bed access8.5
Install effort7.0
Durability8.5
Value6.5
8.2overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • 500 lb published rating, the highest of any retractable here
  • The electromagnetic brake means it holds at any opening, not just fully open or closed
  • T-slot rails are a genuine ecosystem rather than a proprietary dead end

Where it gives way

  • The canister permanently occupies bed length at the bulkhead and cannot be removed for a tall load
  • RETRAX does not publish canister dimensions, so you cannot plan around the loss before buying
  • Powered operation adds a wiring step and a failure mode a manual cover does not have

Skip it if: Anyone who wants the bed length back. A retractable's canister lives at the bulkhead permanently, and it is not removable like a folding cover.

#3 · T-slot rack compatibility

RetraxONE XR

RETRAX · Retractable (manual)

The T-slot retractable at the accessible end of the RETRAX range. Read the two published numbers before you buy: 200 lb, and one year.

What it does well

  • Integrated T-slot rails at the lowest price in the RETRAX retractable line
  • Key-lockable in any position, the same as the more expensive models
  • Polycarbonate deck is lighter than the PRO's double-wall aluminum

Where it gives way

  • 200 lb rating — a quarter of what the Extang folding covers publish and under half the RetraxPRO MX
  • One-year warranty, against limited lifetime on the RetraxPRO MX
  • Canister cost in bed length is the same as the expensive models without the matching durability numbers

Skip it if: Carrying anything meaningful on top — 200 lb is less than half what the PRO models publish.

Common questions

Are RETRAX tonneau covers any good?

The RetraxPRO MX is the most completely specified cover in our registry — 500 lb, limited lifetime warranty, key-lockable at any position independently of the tailgate, temperature tested from -40°F to 180°F, assembled in North Dakota. The range varies enormously though: the RetraxONE XR publishes 200 lb and a one-year warranty under the same brand.

What problems do RETRAX covers have?

The documented reports are mechanism problems: a slat shifting out of place and binding so the cover will not open, covers jumping the track off-road, friction-lock wear so partial positions no longer hold, and at least one reported case of a powered cover not opening fully with the remote. Keeping the rail channels clear is the main preventive measure.

How much bed space does a RETRAX canister take?

RETRAX does not publish canister dimensions for any model, which is the one gap in an otherwise complete specification. The product pages describe a low-profile canister sitting flush with the bed rails, which answers height but not length. Measure a fitted example or ask the retailer.

Does the RETRAX warranty transfer to a new owner?

No. RETRAX publishes the RetraxPRO MX's limited lifetime coverage as non-transferable. The PowertraxPRO XR publishes three years then prorated lifetime, and the RetraxONE XR one year.
