Tonneau Cover Brands: What Each One Is Actually Good At

Brand pages that include the known problems, sourced, instead of pretending every cover is flawless.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.

Almost every tonneau cover brand page on the internet reads the same way: a history paragraph, a list of model names, and a conclusion that the brand is excellent. That is not useful to somebody deciding where to spend eight hundred dollars.

These pages are built differently. Each one covers what the brand genuinely builds well, what its published warranty actually says once you read the exclusions, and the problems owners report — with the evidence cited inline and the date it was read. Where the evidence for a reported problem is thin, the page says it is thin rather than inflating an anecdote into a pattern.

Warranty terms are the manufacturers' published figures as read on 2026-10-05. Several vary by model within one brand, which is noted on each brand page.

Read the warranty, not the number

Warranty length is the most quoted and least understood spec in this category. Three things routinely hide behind a headline figure, and all three appear in this registry:

  • Transferability. BAK and RETRAX both publish their coverage as not transferable to a subsequent owner. If you buy a truck with a cover already on it, the warranty did not come with it.
  • Registration. UnderCover's five-year coverage is original-owner only and requires registration. An unregistered cover is an uncovered cover.
  • Split terms. Gator's ETX publishes a limited lifetime frame warranty and a ten-year tarp warranty. The tarp is the part that wears out, so ten years is the number that matters. Peragon publishes 1, 3 and 5-year terms across three trims of the same product line.

How the "known problems" sections work

Every brand page here has one, and it is built under a rule: no aggregate claim without at least two cited sources. "Owners report" is a phrase that needs evidence attached or it is just a rumor with a byline. Where we found only isolated reports of something, the page says so and labels it as anecdote rather than a pattern. Where a manufacturer publishes a service bulletin or a known-issue note, that gets cited directly.

This is deliberately the opposite of how most brand coverage works, and it is the main reason this section exists at all. A brand page that cannot name a single weakness is a brand page nobody should trust.

What we do not do

We have not fitted any of these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Every score and every problem on these pages is read off a published source and linked. Our editorial policy sets out exactly what that means and where it leaves gaps.

Where to start

If you want the short version, the brands ranked page puts them in order with the reasoning attached. If you are researching one brand because you have already half-decided, go straight to its page — the problems section is the part you came for.

Common questions

Which tonneau cover brand is the best?

It depends on the type. RETRAX leads the retractables and publishes a limited lifetime warranty on the RetraxPRO MX. BAK and UnderCover lead hard folding. Extang publishes the highest load ratings at 600 lb. TruXedo is the most reliable soft-cover choice. No single brand leads every type, and a page that says otherwise has not compared them.

Do tonneau cover warranties transfer if I sell the truck?

Usually not. BAK and RETRAX both publish their coverage as non-transferable, and UnderCover's five-year term is original-owner only with registration required. If you are buying a used truck with a cover fitted, assume the warranty did not come with it.

Are cheaper brands like Tyger Auto worth buying?

For a soft cover, often yes. Tyger publishes real material figures — dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl on aircraft-grade aluminum rails with stainless clamps — where many budget covers say nothing specific at all. The weak points are the Velcro side sealing and inconsistent published warranty terms between listings, both of which are stated on the brand page.
