TruXedo Tonneau Covers: Review and Known Problems

The soft-cover brand most people should start from, with a hard roll-up that punches above its class - and a thin complaint record.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.

What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.

The short answer

Three covers, three warranty structures, and the differences matter: 5 years on the TruXport, limited lifetime defect coverage on the Lo Pro, and 5 years on the Sentry CT explicitly including the fabric.

The Sentry CT is the standout: 400 lb and up to six auto-engaging latches in a cover that still rolls.

We found very little complaint evidence for this brand, and this page says so rather than inventing a problems section.

The range

All three are published as no-drill clamp-on fits. The Sentry CT is published as made in America.

What TruXedo does well

The soft cover most people should buy

The TruXport publishes a 30-minute no-drill clamp-on install, 100 percent bed access when rolled fully forward, vehicle-specific hardware in the box, and a 5-year warranty. For a bed carrying nothing worth stealing, that combination is hard to argue with and it is the recommendation on most of our soft-cover pages.

A published profile figure

TruXedo publishes the Lo Pro at three-quarters of an inch above the bed rails, with side rails mounting inside the bed. That is the only published profile figure among the soft covers in this registry, and it means you can compare rather than guess.

A hard roll-up that competes with folding covers

The Sentry CT publishes 400 lb, level-2 locks, a tension cable and up to six latches that engage automatically on closing, in interlocking aluminum slats under RTxTechWeave five-layer, 120-grade canvas. That is hard-cover security with roll-up geometry, and the warranty explicitly covers the fabric — against the BAKFlip MX4.

The anti-sag engineering, which is worth noting

TruXedo publishes heavy-duty alloy support rods spanning the bed width to prevent sagging, a no-sag surface with integrated supports to prevent pooling water and flapping, and pre-set tension controls at either rail to keep the cover taut regardless of season.

That matters because sagging, pooling and flapping are the three characteristic failure behaviors of a cheap vinyl cover. A maker engineering specifically against all three, and saying so, is addressing the right problems.

Known problems

How this section is built

No aggregate claim without at least two cited sources. Where we found only isolated reports, the page says so and labels it anecdote rather than a pattern. Forum threads are owner reports, not verified failure rates — they tell you what some owners experienced, not how common it is. Our sourcing standards in full.

We found no documented complaint pattern for TruXedo. Searching for owner reports of vinyl sagging, warranty disputes or specific failure modes returned manufacturer and retailer product pages rather than forum threads or complaint listings — the opposite of what the same search returns for some other brands in this registry.

That is not a claim that TruXedo covers never fail. It is a statement about what we could find, and we would rather say it plainly than fill the section with speculation. If you have documented evidence of a pattern we missed, send it and we will add it with the source.

What we can say from the published terms

  • The TruXport and Lo Pro publish no load rating, which is correct for a soft cover and means zero. Snow accumulation is the load to watch.
  • TruXedo's warranty excludes used products, and products repaired, altered, modified, or subjected to misuse, negligence, accident or ordinary wear and tear. “Ordinary wear and tear” is doing real work in that sentence on a vinyl product — chalked vinyl after years of UV is wear, not a defect.
  • The Lo Pro's limited lifetime coverage is for manufacturing and material defects. That is a different thing from lifetime coverage of the vinyl surface.

The maintenance that protects the warranty

Since ordinary wear is excluded, the UV protectant routine is what keeps a TruXedo vinyl cover out of that category for as long as possible. Two or three applications a year.

Which TruXedo

Sentry CT if you want security and a load rating in a roll-up. TruXport if you want the cheapest good soft cover and the fastest install. Lo Pro if you want the flattest soft profile and the longest defect warranty — the two compared.

The picks in detail

#1 · Security without losing the roll

TruXedo Sentry CT

TruXedo · Roll-up (hard)

Interlocking aluminum slats under a five-layer canvas skin: a 400 lb rating and up to six auto-engaging latches in a cover that still rolls up instead of folding.

Security8.5
Weather sealing8.0
Bed access8.0
Install effort8.0
Durability8.5
Value7.5
8.2overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • 400 lb rating on a roll-up, which usually means a folding cover or nothing
  • Up to six latches that engage automatically — no walking the bed to lock each one
  • Warranty explicitly covers the fabric as well as the hard parts, which soft covers rarely do

Where it gives way

  • The rolled slat bundle permanently occupies the front of the bed
  • An hour to fit, where a soft roll-up is thirty minutes
  • Canvas over slats is more surface to keep clean than a plain aluminum panel

Skip it if: Anyone who assumes a hard roll-up gives a clear bed. Rolled up, the slat bundle sits at the bulkhead and stays there.

#2 · Full bed access on a budget

TruXedo TruXport

TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)

The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.

Security4.0
Weather sealing6.5
Bed access9.5
Install effort9.5
Durability6.5
Value9.0
7.6overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
  • 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
  • Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box

Where it gives way

  • Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
  • Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
  • Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks

Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.

#3 · A soft cover that sits flush

TruXedo Lo Pro

TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)

The TruXport with the profile taken out of it: a published three-quarters of an inch above the rails, a leather-grained finish, and a limited lifetime warranty against defects.

Security4.0
Weather sealing7.0
Bed access8.5
Install effort8.5
Durability7.0
Value8.5
7.6overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • Limited lifetime defect warranty — the longest coverage in this registry
  • Three-quarters of an inch above the rails is a published figure and it looks it
  • Rails mount inside the bed, so the bed rail caps stay visible

Where it gives way

  • Nearly full access, not full — the rolled bundle and its buckles stay in the bed
  • Soft cover, so the security story is the same as every soft cover: there isn't one
  • An hour to fit rather than the TruXport's 30 minutes

Skip it if: Anyone expecting the whole bed clear. Rolled and buckled it gives nearly full access, not the TruXport's clean 100 percent.

Common questions

Are TruXedo tonneau covers good?

The TruXport is the soft cover we recommend most often — 30-minute no-drill install, 100 percent bed access rolled forward, 5-year warranty. The Sentry CT is a 400 lb hard roll-up with up to six auto-engaging latches and warranty covering the fabric as well as the hard parts, which is unusual.

What problems do TruXedo covers have?

We found no documented complaint pattern. Searching for owner reports of sagging, warranty disputes or specific failure modes returned manufacturer and retailer pages rather than forum threads — the opposite of what the same search returns for some other brands here. That is a statement about what we could find, not a claim that TruXedo covers never fail.

What does TruXedo's warranty exclude?

Used products, and products repaired, altered, modified, or subjected to misuse, negligence, accident or ordinary wear and tear. On a vinyl cover, 'ordinary wear and tear' is doing real work — chalked vinyl after years of UV exposure is wear rather than a defect, which is why a UV protectant routine matters.

Does the TruXedo Lo Pro's lifetime warranty cover the vinyl?

It covers manufacturing and material defects for life, which is not the same as covering the vinyl surface against wear. No warranty in this category covers vinyl that has chalked from years of sun exposure without a protectant.
