The Best Roll-Up Tonneau Covers
The only type that genuinely clears your bed. Here is what each one gives up to do it.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Soft roll-up: the TruXedo TruXport. Thirty minutes, no drilling, a 5-year warranty, and it rolls completely forward for genuine 100 percent bed access.
Hard roll-up: the TruXedo Sentry CT. Interlocking aluminum slats under five-layer canvas, a 400 lb rating, and up to six latches that engage automatically as you close it.
Every roll-up leaves a bundle at the bulkhead when open. That is the type's structural cost and no model escapes it.
Why a roll-up rather than a folding cover
One reason, and it is a good one: a roll-up is the only cover type that genuinely vacates the bed. Folding covers publish 100 percent bed access, which means every inch is reachable — but the folded stack still occupies the front third. A TruXport rolled forward and strapped leaves a tight bundle at the bulkhead and nothing else.
If you load full-length material, bulky furniture, or anything that needs the bed walls clear from the tailgate to the cab, that difference decides the purchase on its own.
Soft roll-up or hard roll-up
The split within this type is bigger than the split between brands. A soft roll-up is vinyl on a frame: cheap, light, fast to fit, no security. A hard roll-up is interlocking aluminum slats: a published load rating, multiple latches, and a bundle that is substantially bulkier when rolled.
| Cover | Build | Load rating | Warranty | Stated install |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TruXedo Sentry CT | Aluminum slats, 5-layer 120-grade canvas | 400 lb | 5-year, fabric included | Under 1 hour |
| BAK Revolver X4s | Aluminum slats, TriShield 70-grade vinyl | 400 lb | 5-year, not transferable | Under 1 hour |
| TruXedo TruXport | Vinyl on clamp-on aluminum frame | Not published | 5 years | 30 minutes or less |
| TruXedo Lo Pro | Tear-resistant vinyl, gloss powder-coat frame | Not published | Limited lifetime, defects | Less than 1 hour |
| Gator ETX | Vinyl tarp on clamp-on rails, 26.9 lb | Not published | Lifetime frame, 10-year tarp | Tool-free |
| Tyger Auto T1 | 24 oz dual-coated vinyl, aluminum rails | Not published | Varies by listing | No-drill clamp-on |
All six are published as no-drill clamp-on fits. Soft covers do not publish a load rating because the honest answer is zero.
Profile height, and why it matters more here
A roll-up sits on rails, and on a soft cover those rails plus the rolled vinyl are what you see. TruXedo publishes the Lo Pro at three-quarters of an inch above the bed rails, which is the only published profile figure among the soft covers here and is visibly flatter than a standard TruXport. The hard roll-ups do better still — BAK publishes the Revolver X4s as sitting nearly flush.
Where roll-ups leak
Roll-ups seal along the sides with either a Velcro strip (the budget approach, used on the Tyger T1) or a tensioned rail system. The Velcro approach is the most common source of leak complaints on cheap roll-ups, and it is worth knowing before you buy rather than after. Tyger's adjustable rail tension system exists to keep the vinyl flat enough for the Velcro to actually seat, which tells you what the failure mode is.
None of them are waterproof. Where the water goes on every cover type covers this in full, and the best-sealing covers page ranks them on seal design specifically.
If you buy a vinyl roll-up, buy a protectant with it
Vinyl chalks in UV, and nobody buys protectant for themselves. 303 Aerospace Protectant publishes SPF 40, is specifically listed for tonneau cover use, and one application is stated to last months. The full care routine is here.
The picks in detail
#1 · Full bed access on a budget
TruXedo TruXport
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.
What it does well
- Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
- 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
- Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box
Where it gives way
- Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
- Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
- Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks
Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.
| Construction | Vinyl over a clamp-on aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Bed access | 100 percent — rolls forward to the cab |

#2 · Security without losing the roll
TruXedo Sentry CT
TruXedo · Roll-up (hard)
Interlocking aluminum slats under a five-layer canvas skin: a 400 lb rating and up to six auto-engaging latches in a cover that still rolls up instead of folding.
What it does well
- 400 lb rating on a roll-up, which usually means a folding cover or nothing
- Up to six latches that engage automatically — no walking the bed to lock each one
- Warranty explicitly covers the fabric as well as the hard parts, which soft covers rarely do
Where it gives way
- The rolled slat bundle permanently occupies the front of the bed
- An hour to fit, where a soft roll-up is thirty minutes
- Canvas over slats is more surface to keep clean than a plain aluminum panel
Skip it if: Anyone who assumes a hard roll-up gives a clear bed. Rolled up, the slat bundle sits at the bulkhead and stays there.

|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited, covering hard parts and fabric |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Locking | Level-2 locks, tension cable, up to 6 auto-engaging latches |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on with no-drill self-leveling rails |
| Origin | Made in America |

#3 · A flush hard roll-up
BAK Revolver X4s
BAK Industries · Roll-up (hard)
Aluminum-reinforced vinyl over interlocking slats, sitting nearly flush with the rails, with rotational locking rails and automatic slam latches and a 400 lb rating.
What it does well
- Nearly flush to the rails while still carrying a 400 lb rating
- Automatic slam latches, so closing it is one motion
- Aluminum-reinforced vinyl over slats resists the slat-edge wear that kills cheap hard roll-ups
Where it gives way
- Warranty does not transfer with the truck
- BAK's own guidance is to re-check every clamp after the first week — plan for it
- Maintenance is specified as mild automotive soap and water only, which rules out most quick detailers
Skip it if: Second owners. BAK's published warranty is explicitly not transferable.
| Construction | Interlocking aluminum slats with TriShield 70-grade vinyl, aluminum reinforced |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited, not transferable |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on |
| Locking | Rotational locking rails, automatic slam latches |
| Profile | Sits nearly flush to the bed rails |

#4 · A soft cover that sits flush
TruXedo Lo Pro
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The TruXport with the profile taken out of it: a published three-quarters of an inch above the rails, a leather-grained finish, and a limited lifetime warranty against defects.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime defect warranty — the longest coverage in this registry
- Three-quarters of an inch above the rails is a published figure and it looks it
- Rails mount inside the bed, so the bed rail caps stay visible
Where it gives way
- Nearly full access, not full — the rolled bundle and its buckles stay in the bed
- Soft cover, so the security story is the same as every soft cover: there isn't one
- An hour to fit rather than the TruXport's 30 minutes
Skip it if: Anyone expecting the whole bed clear. Rolled and buckled it gives nearly full access, not the TruXport's clean 100 percent.
| Construction | Industrial-grade tear-resistant vinyl, gloss-black powder-coated aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Leather-grained vinyl |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime against manufacturing and material defects |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour |
| Drilling | None — no-drill clamp-on mounting |
| Profile height | ¾ inch above the bed rails |
| Bed access | Roll to the bulkhead and buckle for nearly full access; tool-free removal |
Specifications read from RealTruck — TruXedo Lo Pro published specifications.

#5 · The clearest warranty terms
Gator ETX Soft Roll Up
Gator · Roll-up (soft)
Made in the USA, 26.9 lb, tool-free clamp-on rails, and a frame warranty published as limited lifetime with ten years on the tarp. The clearest warranty split in the soft class.
What it does well
- Publishes the frame and tarp warranties separately instead of hiding the shorter one
- 26.9 lb is a published weight, and it is light enough to fit alone
- Tool-free rails — nothing to borrow before you start
Where it gives way
- Security is whatever your tailgate lock provides, and nothing more
- Ten years on the tarp means the vinyl is the service item, as it is on every soft cover
- Rolled up, the bundle sits at the bulkhead and stays there
Skip it if: Buyers who want the tarp covered as long as the frame — the ten-year tarp term is the real number.
| Construction | Vinyl tarp on clamp-on rails |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl |
| Cover weight | 26.9 lb |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime on the frame, 10 years on the tarp |
| Drilling | None — tool-free clamp-on rails |
| Bed access | Rolls up for full bed access |
| Locking | Secures with the tailgate lock |
| Origin | Made in the USA |

#6 · The lowest price that still states its specs
Tyger Auto T1 Soft Roll-Up
Tyger Auto · Roll-up (soft)
The budget roll-up that actually publishes its materials: dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl on aircraft-grade aluminum rails with stainless clamps, and an adjustable tension system to keep it flat.
What it does well
- 24 oz dual-coated vinyl is a real published figure, not 'heavy-duty vinyl'
- Adjustable rail tension is the fix for the wrinkling that plagues cheap roll-ups
- Stainless clamps rather than plated steel, which is where budget covers usually rust first
Where it gives way
- The published warranty term is inconsistent between listings — check the one you are actually buying
- Velcro side sealing is the weakest seal design in this registry and it is also the most common leak complaint on roll-ups
- No published load rating, which is normal for soft covers but worth saying
Skip it if: Anyone who wants a single clear warranty answer — Tyger's published term varies by listing between five years and limited lifetime.
| Construction | Dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl, aircraft-grade aluminum side rails |
|---|---|
| Clamps | Stainless steel |
| Sealing | Velcro side strips, latch lock at the tailgate |
| Tension | Adjustable tension system on the side rails |
| Warranty | Published as 5 years on some listings, limited lifetime on others |
| Drilling | None — no-drill clamp-on |

Common questions
What is the best roll-up tonneau cover?
For a soft roll-up, the TruXedo TruXport — 30 minutes to fit, no drilling, a 5-year warranty and genuine 100 percent bed access when rolled forward. For a hard roll-up, the TruXedo Sentry CT, with interlocking aluminum slats under five-layer canvas, a 400 lb rating and up to six auto-engaging latches.
Do roll-up tonneau covers give full bed access?
Closer than any other type, but not quite perfect. The cover rolls forward to the bulkhead and is strapped or buckled there, so a bundle stays in the bed. TruXedo publishes 100 percent bed access for the TruXport and nearly full access for the Lo Pro — the difference is how the rolled cover is secured.
Are roll-up tonneau covers secure?
Soft roll-ups are not. Vinyl is cuttable and the locking usually depends on the tailgate, so treat a soft roll-up as weather and privacy protection. Hard roll-ups are a different product: the TruXedo Sentry CT uses level-2 locks, a tension cable and up to six auto-engaging latches, and the BAK Revolver X4s uses rotational locking rails with automatic slam latches.
How long does a roll-up tonneau cover take to fit?
TruXedo publishes 30 minutes or less for the TruXport and less than an hour for the Lo Pro and Sentry CT. The Gator ETX is published as a tool-free clamp-on fit. All of them are no-drill on most applications.
