Tonneau Cover Brands, Ranked
No brand leads every type. Here is who is best at what, and which warranty small print matters.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
No brand wins everywhere. RETRAX leads retractables, BAK and UnderCover lead folding, Extang publishes the highest ratings, TruXedo is the most reliable soft choice.
Read the warranty exclusions, not the length. Three brands here publish coverage that does not transfer with the truck.
The ranking, and the reasoning
1. RETRAX — best retractables
The RetraxPRO MX publishes 500 lb, a limited lifetime warranty, key-lockable positions along the whole bed, locking independent of the tailgate, temperature testing from -40°F to 180°F, and assembly in Grand Forks, North Dakota. That is the most complete specification of any cover in this registry.
The caution is range consistency: the RetraxONE XR publishes 200 lb and a one-year warranty under the same brand. RETRAX in full.
2. BAK Industries — best folding breadth
The BAKFlip MX4 is the default recommendation on most pages of this site: 400 lb, 5 years, a published 30-minute no-drill install, and seals BAK revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage. The G2, F1 and Revolver X4s cover the rest of the range well.
Warranty does not transfer. BAKFlip in full.
3. Extang — highest published ratings
600 lb on both the Solid Fold ALX and the Encore, which is 200 lb clear of anything else here. The Encore is also the only dual-access cover in this registry, opening from the front as well as the rear. Extang in full.
4. UnderCover — the capability nobody else publishes
The UltraFlex is the only cover here rated to be driven with the cover folded open, and the ArmorFlex's dual-action tailgate seal lets the tailgate drop without unlatching. Both 400 lb and 5 years, original owner only with registration. UnderCover in full.
5. TruXedo — best soft covers, and a strong hard roll-up
The TruXport is the soft cover most people should buy; the Lo Pro publishes a limited lifetime defect warranty and a three-quarter-inch profile; the Sentry CT is a 400 lb hard roll-up with up to six auto-engaging latches and warranty covering the fabric. TruXedo in full.
6. LOMAX — the flattest
A published half-inch above the bed rails on extruded aluminum at 400 lb. The trade-offs are a limited 3-year warranty and a thinner published specification than anyone else here. LOMAX in full.
7. Gator — honest entry level
The FX3 at 300 lb with a 2-year warranty and a 30-day exchange; the ETX soft roll-up at a published 26.9 lb with a split lifetime-frame and ten-year-tarp warranty. That split is the most informative warranty structure in the category. Gator in full.
8. Tyger Auto — best budget
Publishes real materials where most cheap covers publish adjectives: dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl, aircraft-grade aluminum rails, stainless clamps. The inconsistency in published warranty terms between listings is the thing to watch. Tyger in full.
9. Peragon — direct sales with a return window
A 60-day money-back guarantee nobody else offers, three warranty terms across one product line, and an NHTSA recall on its Tectonic folding covers that is public record. Peragon in full.
Every warranty, with its exclusions
| Brand | Published term | Exclusions worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| RETRAX | Limited lifetime (PRO MX) to 1 year (ONE XR) | Non-transferable; the range varies enormously |
| BAK Industries | 5 years (MX4, F1, Revolver X4s), 3 years (G2) | Not transferable to a subsequent owner |
| Extang | Limited lifetime (Trifecta 2.0) to 3 years (Encore) | Component-specific coverage; read which parts |
| UnderCover | 5-year limited | Original owner only, registration required |
| TruXedo | Limited lifetime (Lo Pro) to 5 years (TruXport, Sentry CT) | Sentry CT coverage explicitly includes the fabric |
| LOMAX | Limited 3-year | Install time and drilling not published |
| Gator | 2 years (FX3); lifetime frame / 10-year tarp (ETX) | 30-day exchange on the FX3 |
| Tyger Auto | 5 years to limited lifetime | Term varies between listings for the same cover |
| Peragon | 1, 3 or 5 years depending on trim | 60-day return, minus $59-$700 return shipping |
The exclusions column is the one to read. A five-year term that does not transfer and requires registration is a different product from a five-year term that does neither.
Why every brand page here has a problems section
Because a brand page that cannot name a single weakness is a brand page nobody should trust. Each one below carries a known-problems section built from cited sources, under the rule that no aggregate claim appears without at least two of them.
On some brands we found a clear, well-documented pattern. On others we found very little, and those pages say so rather than inventing something to fill the section. Both outcomes are information.
The picks in detail
#1 · A retractable that will outlast the truck
RetraxPRO MX
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
- Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
- Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story
Where it gives way
- The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
- Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
- Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating
Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.
| Construction | Double-wall aluminum slats |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime, non-transferable |
| Locking | Key-lockable TraxLatch handle, infinite locking positions |
| Stated install time | Less than 60 minutes |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on rails, four quick-attach clamps |
| Temperature tested | -40°F to 180°F |
| Sealing | Integrated water management with drain tubes |
| Origin | Assembled in Grand Forks, North Dakota |

#2 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#3 · Carrying load on top of the cover
Extang Solid Fold ALX
Extang · Hard folding
The highest published load rating in this roundup at 600 lb, on inch-thick TPO panels in an aluminum frame, with tool-free clamps and a five-year warranty.
What it does well
- 600 lb published rating is the highest here by 200 lb — the one cover in the group you can actually plan to load
- Inch-thick TPO panels are substantially more rigid than a thin aluminum skin
- Tool-free clamps, and removable without tools when you need the whole bed
Where it gives way
- Folded, access is two-thirds — the full-bed answer is taking the cover off, not folding it further
- Panel thickness means more weight to lift off than a thin folding cover
- Warranty text covers rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware; the panel itself is described separately
Skip it if: Anyone who needs more than two-thirds of the bed open at once without pulling the cover off the truck.
| Construction | 1-inch EnduraShield TPO panels, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 600 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None — tool-free Jaw-Grip clamps |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when folded; removable without tools for full access |
| Sealing | Triple-fin perimeter seals |

#4 · Full bed access on a budget
TruXedo TruXport
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.
What it does well
- Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
- 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
- Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box
Where it gives way
- Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
- Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
- Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks
Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.
| Construction | Vinyl over a clamp-on aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Bed access | 100 percent — rolls forward to the cab |
| Mounting | Clamp-on, vehicle-specific hardware included |

#5 · Carrying tall loads often
UnderCover UltraFlex
UnderCover · Hard folding
The folding cover built to be driven open: it folds to the cab and the maker states you can drive that way, which is the single most useful thing a folding cover can offer a person hauling tall loads.
What it does well
- Rated to be driven with the cover folded open — most folding covers simply do not say this
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating with a 5-year warranty behind it
- Polymer core gives the panel more dent resistance than a hollow aluminum skin
Where it gives way
- Folded to the cab it still consumes bed length, driving or parked
- UnderCover's warranty specifically rules out rear-towing the vehicle with the cover on — read it before you flat-tow
- Matte finish needs a dedicated protectant rather than wax
Skip it if: Towing from the rear with the cover fitted — UnderCover's own warranty says not to.
| Construction | Aluminum with a high-density polymer core |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None on most applications |
| Bed access | 100 percent, all the time — rated to drive folded open |
Specifications read from RealTruck — UnderCover UltraFlex (Gen 3) published specifications.

#6 · The lowest cost per year of use
Tyger Auto T3 Soft Tri-Fold
Tyger Auto · Tri-fold (soft)
The cheapest cover in this registry that still names its materials. Pre-assembled crossbars fold with the cover, which is the one design detail that separates a good budget tri-fold from a bad one.
What it does well
- Crossbars fold with the cover rather than needing to be lifted out — the detail that makes a budget tri-fold usable daily
- 24 oz dual-coated marine-grade vinyl is published, not vague
- Clamp-and-latch fit, no drilling, on a cover at the bottom of the market
Where it gives way
- Soft tri-fold access only — the folded stack lives at the bulkhead
- Vinyl at this price is the first thing to go; plan on a protectant routine
- Tailgate-dependent locking means an unlocked tailgate is an unlocked bed
Skip it if: A truck that lives outside in hard sun. Budget vinyl is the part that ages, and it ages fastest in UV.
| Construction | Dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Crossbars | Pre-assembled horizontal crossbars that fold with the cover |
| Install | Clamp-and-latch, no drilling |
| Locking | Lockable with the tailgate |
| Warranty | 5 years for US customers |

Common questions
What is the best tonneau cover brand?
It depends on the type. RETRAX leads retractables with the RetraxPRO MX's 500 lb rating and limited lifetime warranty. BAK and UnderCover lead hard folding. Extang publishes the highest load ratings at 600 lb. TruXedo is the most reliable soft-cover choice. No single brand leads every type.
Which tonneau cover brands have the best warranty?
RETRAX publishes limited lifetime on the RetraxPRO MX, TruXedo publishes limited lifetime on the Lo Pro, and Extang publishes limited lifetime on the Trifecta 2.0 covering the vinyl as well as the frame. Read the exclusions though: RETRAX and BAK publish non-transferable coverage, and UnderCover's is original-owner only with registration required.
Are expensive tonneau cover brands worth it?
What the money buys is a higher published load rating, a longer warranty, better seal design and a more complete published specification. Whether that is worth it depends on whether you will ever load the cover and how long you expect to keep the truck. Tyger Auto publishes real materials at the budget end and is a rational purchase for a cover that is purely a lid.
