UnderCover Tonneau Covers: Review and Known Problems
Two published capabilities no other brand here offers, and one warranty clause that will matter to anyone who tows.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
The UltraFlex is the only cover in this registry the maker rates to be driven with the cover folded open.
The ArmorFlex's dual-action tailgate seal lets the tailgate drop without unlatching the cover.
Read the warranty clause: do not tow the vehicle from the rear with the cover on. And coverage is original-owner only, registration required.
The range
| Cover | Construction | Rating | Distinguishing feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| UltraFlex | Aluminum with high-density polymer core | 400 lb | Rated to be driven folded open |
| ArmorFlex | Aluminum panels with Multi-Shield coating | 400 lb | Dual-action tailgate seal; prop rods for full access |
Both publish 400 lb and 5-year limited coverage, original owner only with registration required. Both are no-drill fits on most applications.
What UnderCover does that nobody else does
100 percent bed access, all the time
UnderCover publishes the UltraFlex as giving 100 percent bed access all the time, folded to the cab, and states you can safely drive with the cover fully open.
That claim is absent from every other cover in this registry, and the absence is not an oversight — a folding cover driven open is a large panel standing upright in an airstream, and most makers would rather not warrant it. If you carry tall loads regularly, this single published capability outweighs every other difference between the UltraFlex and its 400 lb rivals — against the BAKFlip MX4.
The dual-action tailgate seal
On the ArmorFlex, the tailgate drops without unlatching the cover. It is a small thing with a very high daily frequency — if you use the tailgate as a workbench, a seat, or just to load, you interact with it every single time.
It is also better sealing engineering: the tailgate interface is the joint that gets worked most, and designing for it rather than treating it as a static seal is the right approach — the sealing comparison.
Three access positions on the ArmorFlex
Two-thirds via safety straps for the quick everyday position, or full access with integrated prop rods securing the cover upright against the rear window. Most folding covers offer the strap position and call it done.
Multi-Shield coating
UnderCover publishes the ArmorFlex's coating as resisting impacts and abrasions, which is a specific functional claim rather than a color description.
Known problems and warranty traps
How this section is built
No aggregate claim without at least two cited sources. Where we found only isolated reports, the page says so and labels it anecdote rather than a pattern. Forum threads are owner reports, not verified failure rates — they tell you what some owners experienced, not how common it is. Our sourcing standards in full.
The rear-towing clause
UnderCover's published warranty text states: do not tow your vehicle from the rear with the cover on your vehicle.
This is published, specific, and easy to miss. It matters to anyone who flat-tows or dollies a truck from the rear — behind an RV, or after a breakdown. Read it in full before you buy if that is a scenario in your life.
Original owner only, registration required
UnderCover publishes its five-year coverage as original owner only, with registration required. Two failure modes there: buying a used truck with the cover fitted means no warranty at all, and buying new and not registering means no warranty either.
Register it the week you fit it. It is the cheapest insurance on this page.
No published cover weight
Neither UnderCover cover publishes a weight, which leaves the one-person-install question unanswered. For context, Rough Country publishes 51.65 lb for a 5'7" hard tri-fold, so expect something in that territory.
No documented complaint pattern found
We found no public forum pattern of UnderCover-specific failures comparable to what exists for some other brands here. As elsewhere on this site, that is a statement about available evidence rather than a clean bill of health.
Two things to do on the day you fit it
Register the warranty, and read the towing clause. Both take five minutes and both are the kind of thing that only matters once — at exactly the moment you would rather they did not.
Which UnderCover
UltraFlex if you carry tall loads — the driven-folded rating is unique here. ArmorFlex if you use the tailgate constantly and want the dual-action seal, or if you want the prop-rod full-access position.
The picks in detail
#1 · Carrying tall loads often
UnderCover UltraFlex
UnderCover · Hard folding
The folding cover built to be driven open: it folds to the cab and the maker states you can drive that way, which is the single most useful thing a folding cover can offer a person hauling tall loads.
What it does well
- Rated to be driven with the cover folded open — most folding covers simply do not say this
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating with a 5-year warranty behind it
- Polymer core gives the panel more dent resistance than a hollow aluminum skin
Where it gives way
- Folded to the cab it still consumes bed length, driving or parked
- UnderCover's warranty specifically rules out rear-towing the vehicle with the cover on — read it before you flat-tow
- Matte finish needs a dedicated protectant rather than wax
Skip it if: Towing from the rear with the cover fitted — UnderCover's own warranty says not to.
| Construction | Aluminum with a high-density polymer core |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None on most applications |
| Bed access | 100 percent, all the time — rated to drive folded open |

#2 · Daily tailgate use
UnderCover ArmorFlex
UnderCover · Hard folding
Aluminum panels with UnderCover's Multi-Shield coating and a dual-action tailgate seal that lets the tailgate drop without unlatching the cover — a small thing you use every single day.
What it does well
- Dual-action tailgate seal means the tailgate drops without unlatching the cover first
- Prop rods give a genuine full-access position rather than only the two-thirds strap position
- Multi-Shield coating is specifically an abrasion and impact claim, not just a color
Where it gives way
- Warranty is original-owner only and needs registering — it does not follow the truck
- Two-thirds access is the quick position; full access needs the prop rods set up
- Assembled in Missouri but published spec sheets omit cover weight
Skip it if: Buyers who want a transferable warranty. Published coverage is original-owner only and requires registration.
| Construction | Aluminum panels with Multi-Shield coating |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black textured |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited, original owner only, registration required |
| Stated install time | Under 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None on most vehicles |
| Bed access | Two-thirds via straps, or full with integrated prop rods |
| Sealing | EPDM seals, integrated drain tubes, dual-action tailgate seal |

Common questions
Can you drive with an UnderCover tonneau cover folded open?
On the UltraFlex, yes — UnderCover publishes it as giving 100 percent bed access all the time and states you can safely drive with the cover fully open. No other cover in our registry makes that claim, so do not assume it for other brands.
Can you tow a truck with an UnderCover cover fitted?
UnderCover's published warranty text says not to tow the vehicle from the rear with the cover on. If you flat-tow or dolly the truck from the rear — behind an RV, or after a breakdown — read that clause in full before buying.
Does the UnderCover warranty transfer when I sell the truck?
No. UnderCover publishes five-year coverage as original owner only, with registration required. Two things follow: a used truck with the cover already fitted has no warranty, and a new cover you never registered has none either. Register it the week you fit it.
What is the dual-action tailgate seal on the UnderCover ArmorFlex?
A seal design that lets the tailgate drop without unlatching the cover first. It is a small convenience with a very high daily frequency, and it is also better sealing engineering — the tailgate interface is the joint that gets worked most on any cover.
