Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.

What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.

The short answer

For most people, the BAKFlip MX4. 400 lb published rating, a 5-year warranty, a 30-minute no-drill fit and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage. It is not the cheapest or the most secure cover here, but it is the one with the fewest reasons to regret it.

If security is the whole point, the RetraxPRO MX. It locks at any position along the bed, operates independently of the tailgate, carries 500 lb and a limited lifetime warranty. The cost is permanent: the canister takes bed length and never gives it back.

If budget is the whole point, the Tyger T3. It publishes real materials where most cheap covers publish adjectives, and the crossbars fold with the cover.

How this list is ordered

Every cover here is scored on the same six metrics published at our editorial policy page: security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability and value. Each score is read off a manufacturer specification, a warranty document or a sourced owner report — the source is cited on each product below, with the date we read it.

We have not fitted these covers to a truck. There is no test lab behind this site and no fleet of trucks, and we will not claim otherwise. What this page offers instead is every published number in one place, with the gaps named: Rough Country publishes no load rating, LOMAX publishes no install time, and RETRAX publishes no canister dimensions for any retractable. Those absences are part of the comparison.

Figures as published by the manufacturer or its primary retailer and read on 2026-10-05. Soft covers do not publish a load rating because the answer is zero — that is a property of the type, not an omission.

Two things jump out of that table. First, load rating and warranty length do not track each other: the RetraxONE XR carries the lowest rating here with the shortest warranty, while Rough Country publishes a five-year term on a cover with no stated rating at all. Second, the 600 lb Extang pair are the only covers in this registry you could sensibly plan to load, and even then "evenly distributed" is doing a lot of work — what that phrase excludes.

Who should buy what

You keep tools in the bed

Buy a retractable or a hard roll-up, and specifically one that locks independently of the tailgate. The RetraxPRO MX and PowertraxPRO XR both do; the TruXedo Sentry CT closes with up to six auto-engaging latches. A soft cover and a tailgate lock is not a security solution, it is a privacy screen. The locking covers page goes through this properly.

You carry tall or long loads regularly

Buy the UnderCover UltraFlex. It is the only cover in this registry the maker rates to be driven with the cover folded open — most folding covers simply do not say that, and the ones that do not are not covers you should drive with folded. Second choice is a soft roll-up, which genuinely clears the bed.

You want it to look like it came with the truck

The LOMAX Stance sits a published half-inch above the bed rails, which is the flattest figure in this registry. The BAK Revolver X4s sits nearly flush. Both are covered on the hard covers page.

You are spending as little as possible

The Tyger T3 soft tri-fold publishes dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl on an aircraft-grade aluminum frame with pre-assembled crossbars that fold with the cover. That last detail is what separates a budget cover you use from one you resent. See best budget tonneau covers.

What a cover will not do

It will not make your truck meaningfully more economical. The published tests disagree with each other — a wind-tunnel study found just under an estimated 2 percent improvement, a road test found 7.7 percent, and a Consumer Reports road test measured a 4 percent loss. All three results, in one table. And it will not keep your bed dry in a storm: no tonneau cover is waterproof, and the water comes in at two places on every type.

Before you buy any of these

Measure your bed. Every cover here is sold against a specific truck, generation and bed length, and the part number changes with all three. An F-150 comes with three bed lengths and a cover for one will not fit another. The measurement takes four minutes and prevents the most common return in the category. Then go to your truck's page for the covers actually sold for your bed.

The picks in detail

#1 · Most truck owners

BAKFlip MX4

BAK Industries · Hard folding

The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.

Security8.5
Weather sealing8.5
Bed access8.0
Install effort9.0
Durability8.5
Value8.0
8.4overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
  • The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
  • Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
  • 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket

Where it gives way

  • Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
  • Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
  • No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker

Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.

#2 · A retractable that will outlast the truck

RetraxPRO MX

RETRAX · Retractable (manual)

What it does well

  • Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
  • Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
  • Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story

Where it gives way

  • The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
  • Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
  • Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating

Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.

#3 · Carrying tall loads often

What it does well

  • Rated to be driven with the cover folded open — most folding covers simply do not say this
  • 400 lb evenly distributed rating with a 5-year warranty behind it
  • Polymer core gives the panel more dent resistance than a hollow aluminum skin

Where it gives way

  • Folded to the cab it still consumes bed length, driving or parked
  • UnderCover's warranty specifically rules out rear-towing the vehicle with the cover on — read it before you flat-tow
  • Matte finish needs a dedicated protectant rather than wax

Skip it if: Towing from the rear with the cover fitted — UnderCover's own warranty says not to.

#4 · Carrying load on top of the cover

Extang Solid Fold ALX

Extang · Hard folding

The highest published load rating in this roundup at 600 lb, on inch-thick TPO panels in an aluminum frame, with tool-free clamps and a five-year warranty.

Security8.5
Weather sealing8.5
Bed access7.5
Install effort8.5
Durability9.0
Value7.5
8.3overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • 600 lb published rating is the highest here by 200 lb — the one cover in the group you can actually plan to load
  • Inch-thick TPO panels are substantially more rigid than a thin aluminum skin
  • Tool-free clamps, and removable without tools when you need the whole bed

Where it gives way

  • Folded, access is two-thirds — the full-bed answer is taking the cover off, not folding it further
  • Panel thickness means more weight to lift off than a thin folding cover
  • Warranty text covers rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware; the panel itself is described separately

Skip it if: Anyone who needs more than two-thirds of the bed open at once without pulling the cover off the truck.

#5 · Security without losing the roll

TruXedo Sentry CT

TruXedo · Roll-up (hard)

Interlocking aluminum slats under a five-layer canvas skin: a 400 lb rating and up to six auto-engaging latches in a cover that still rolls up instead of folding.

Security8.5
Weather sealing8.0
Bed access8.0
Install effort8.0
Durability8.5
Value7.5
8.2overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • 400 lb rating on a roll-up, which usually means a folding cover or nothing
  • Up to six latches that engage automatically — no walking the bed to lock each one
  • Warranty explicitly covers the fabric as well as the hard parts, which soft covers rarely do

Where it gives way

  • The rolled slat bundle permanently occupies the front of the bed
  • An hour to fit, where a soft roll-up is thirty minutes
  • Canvas over slats is more surface to keep clean than a plain aluminum panel

Skip it if: Anyone who assumes a hard roll-up gives a clear bed. Rolled up, the slat bundle sits at the bulkhead and stays there.

#6 · Full bed access on a budget

TruXedo TruXport

TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)

The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.

What it does well

  • Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
  • 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
  • Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box

Where it gives way

  • Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
  • Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
  • Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks

Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.

Tyger Auto T3 Soft Tri-Fold

What it does well

  • Crossbars fold with the cover rather than needing to be lifted out — the detail that makes a budget tri-fold usable daily
  • 24 oz dual-coated marine-grade vinyl is published, not vague
  • Clamp-and-latch fit, no drilling, on a cover at the bottom of the market

Where it gives way

  • Soft tri-fold access only — the folded stack lives at the bulkhead
  • Vinyl at this price is the first thing to go; plan on a protectant routine
  • Tailgate-dependent locking means an unlocked tailgate is an unlocked bed

Skip it if: A truck that lives outside in hard sun. Budget vinyl is the part that ages, and it ages fastest in UV.

Common questions

What is the best tonneau cover overall?

The BAKFlip MX4, for most buyers. It publishes a 400 lb evenly distributed rating, a 5-year warranty, a 30-minute no-drill clamp-on install and 100 percent bed access, with EPDM perimeter seals and an integrated drainage system the maker revised specifically to address bulkhead seepage. It is not the most secure or the cheapest cover here, but it has the fewest trade-offs that will bother you later.

What is the most secure tonneau cover?

The RetraxPRO MX. It locks at any position along the bed with a key-lockable handle, operates independently of the tailgate so an unlocked tailgate does not open the bed, carries a published 500 lb rating and ships with a limited lifetime warranty. The RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR is the powered version of the same idea.

Which tonneau cover has the highest weight capacity?

The Extang Solid Fold ALX and the Extang Encore, both published at 600 lb evenly distributed. The next highest in this registry are the two RETRAX PRO retractables at 500 lb, then a cluster of hard folding and hard roll-up covers at 400 lb.

Do I need a hard cover, or is a soft one enough?

It depends entirely on what lives in the bed. If the answer includes anything you would miss, buy a hard cover that locks independently of the tailgate. If the bed carries a cooler, firewood and the occasional load from the hardware store, a soft roll-up like the TruXedo TruXport does the job for a fraction of the money and gives you better bed access than any hard cover.

How long does a tonneau cover take to install?

Published figures in this registry run from 30 minutes (BAKFlip MX4, BAKFlip G2, TruXedo TruXport, UnderCover UltraFlex) to under an hour (TruXedo Lo Pro, Sentry CT, BAK Revolver X4s, RetraxPRO MX, Extang Solid Fold ALX). Every one of them is a no-drill clamp-on fit on most applications. Powered retractables add a wiring step on top.
