Tonneau Cover Weight Capacity
Published ratings run from 200 lb to 600 lb. The words 'evenly distributed' are doing more work than most people realize.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Published ratings in this registry: 200 lb to 600 lb, all “evenly distributed”.
Evenly distributed excludes a point load. A person standing on one panel, a toolbox on one corner, a jack on the middle — none of those are what the rating describes.
No published rating means no rating. Every soft cover, and the Rough Country Low Profile, should be treated as carrying nothing.
Every published rating
| Cover | Type | Published rating |
|---|---|---|
| Extang Solid Fold ALX | Hard folding | 600 lb |
| Extang Encore | Hard folding, dual access | 600 lb |
| Syneticusa MB | Retractable, electric | 600 lb |
| RetraxPRO MX | Retractable, manual | 500 lb |
| RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR | Retractable, electric | 500 lb |
| BAKFlip MX4 / F1 | Hard folding | 400 lb |
| UnderCover UltraFlex / ArmorFlex | Hard folding | 400 lb |
| TruXedo Sentry CT | Hard roll-up | 400 lb |
| BAK Revolver X4s | Hard roll-up | 400 lb |
| LOMAX Stance | Hard tri-fold | 400 lb |
| BAKFlip G2 | Hard folding | 300 lb |
| Gator FX3 | Hard folding | 300 lb |
| RetraxONE XR | Retractable, manual | 200 lb |
| Rough Country Low Profile | Hard tri-fold | Not published |
| Every soft cover | Vinyl roll-up and tri-fold | Not published |
Where a cell reads 'not published', the manufacturer states no figure. Soft covers do not publish one because the honest answer for a vinyl surface is zero - that is a property of the type, not an omission.
What “evenly distributed” means
It means the load is spread across the whole surface of the cover, not concentrated. Every single rating in the table above carries that qualifier, and it is not boilerplate.
A 400 lb evenly distributed rating does not mean you can put a 350 lb object on one panel. It describes a load spread over roughly the cover's whole area. Things that are not evenly distributed:
- A person standing on it. Your weight goes through two feet, which on a panel is a concentrated load regardless of what you weigh.
- A toolbox set on one end. Concentrated on four small feet or two edges.
- Anything with legs, wheels or corners. Same problem.
- A load that shifts while driving. An evenly distributed load that slides to one end stops being evenly distributed.
The practical reading: the rating is for things like a sheet of plywood laid flat, a tarp-covered load spread across the cover, or a bed-length layer of snow. Not for a generator.
Snow is the load nobody plans for
A bed-length layer of wet snow is genuinely heavy and it is the most common way people discover their cover's rating. It is also the most evenly distributed load a cover ever sees, which is the one point in its favor.
Clear it rather than letting it build, particularly on a cover with no published rating. Snow and ice, including how to clear it without damaging a seal.
Covers with no published rating
Two cases in this registry, and they should be read differently.
Soft covers publish no rating because the answer is zero. Vinyl over bows is not a structural surface and no maker pretends otherwise. That is honest and expected.
Rough Country's Hard Low Profile cover publishes no rating despite being an aluminum-panel hard cover where you would expect one. That absence is worth weighing: the cover publishes per-bed weights (51.65 lb at 5'7", 59.50 lb at 6'7"), a 5-year warranty and drain tubes, but nothing on load. Treat it as rated for nothing, because you have nothing to go on.
If you want to carry things on top properly
The answer is not a higher cover rating — it is a rack system that transfers load into the bed rails rather than onto the cover. RETRAX publishes integrated T-slot rails on the PowertraxPRO XR and the RetraxONE XR that take most third-party crossbars, cargo holders and bed tents.
That is the correct way to carry a kayak, a roof tent or lumber above the bed. A cover rating is for incidental load, not for a mounting system. Rack and crossbar compatibility.
The honest summary
Ratings in this category are real published figures, but they describe a narrower situation than people assume. If your plan involves putting a specific heavy object on the cover, the rating is probably not the permission you think it is — and the 600 lb Extang pair are the only covers here where the number gives you much room.
The picks in detail
#1 · Carrying load on top of the cover
Extang Solid Fold ALX
Extang · Hard folding
The highest published load rating in this roundup at 600 lb, on inch-thick TPO panels in an aluminum frame, with tool-free clamps and a five-year warranty.
What it does well
- 600 lb published rating is the highest here by 200 lb — the one cover in the group you can actually plan to load
- Inch-thick TPO panels are substantially more rigid than a thin aluminum skin
- Tool-free clamps, and removable without tools when you need the whole bed
Where it gives way
- Folded, access is two-thirds — the full-bed answer is taking the cover off, not folding it further
- Panel thickness means more weight to lift off than a thin folding cover
- Warranty text covers rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware; the panel itself is described separately
Skip it if: Anyone who needs more than two-thirds of the bed open at once without pulling the cover off the truck.
| Construction | 1-inch EnduraShield TPO panels, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 600 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None — tool-free Jaw-Grip clamps |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when folded; removable without tools for full access |
| Sealing | Triple-fin perimeter seals |

#2 · A toolbox at the bulkhead
Extang Encore
Extang · Hard folding
The folding cover that opens from both ends. Front-panel access via a BOLT one-key lock plus the usual rear access makes it the answer when a toolbox or a bulkhead box lives at the front of the bed.
What it does well
- Dual access front and rear is genuinely rare and solves the bulkhead-toolbox problem properly
- 600 lb rating matches the Solid Fold ALX
- The BOLT front lock uses the key already in your pocket — one fewer key on the ring
Where it gives way
- 3-year warranty is shorter than the Solid Fold ALX's 5
- BOLT locks code permanently to one vehicle and cannot be re-coded, so the cover's lock does not follow you to a new truck
- Two access points mean two seal paths to keep clean
Skip it if: Anyone who changes trucks often — the BOLT lock codes permanently to one ignition key and cannot be re-keyed.
| Construction | EnduraShield automotive-grade polymer panels, aluminum frame and hinges |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat on frame and hinges |
| Load rating | 600 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 3 years |
| Drilling | None — no-drill install |
| Bed access | Front AND rear — dual-access design |
| Front lock | BOLT one-key technology, codes to the truck's ignition key |
| Removal | Attaches or removes in seconds, no tools |

#3 · A retractable that will outlast the truck
RetraxPRO MX
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
- Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
- Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story
Where it gives way
- The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
- Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
- Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating
Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.
| Construction | Double-wall aluminum slats |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime, non-transferable |
| Locking | Key-lockable TraxLatch handle, infinite locking positions |
| Stated install time | Less than 60 minutes |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on rails, four quick-attach clamps |
| Temperature tested | -40°F to 180°F |
| Sealing | Integrated water management with drain tubes |
| Origin | Assembled in Grand Forks, North Dakota |

#4 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

Common questions
How much weight can a tonneau cover hold?
Published ratings in our registry run from 200 lb (RetraxONE XR) to 600 lb (Extang Solid Fold ALX and Encore), with most hard covers at 400 lb. Every one of those is 'evenly distributed', which describes a load spread across the whole cover rather than concentrated in one place.
Can you stand on a tonneau cover?
Not within what the rating describes. Your weight goes through two feet, which is a concentrated point load regardless of what you weigh, and every published rating in this category is for an evenly distributed load. Covers with no published rating — every soft cover, and the Rough Country Low Profile — should carry nothing at all.
What does 'evenly distributed' mean on a tonneau cover rating?
The load is spread across the whole surface rather than concentrated. A sheet of plywood laid flat or a bed-length layer of snow is evenly distributed. A toolbox on one corner, a jack in the middle, or a person standing on one panel is not — and none of those are covered by the published figure.
How do I carry things on top of my truck bed properly?
With a rack that transfers load into the bed rails rather than onto the cover. RETRAX publishes integrated T-slot rails on the PowertraxPRO XR and RetraxONE XR that take most third-party crossbars, cargo holders and bed tents. A cover's load rating is for incidental weight, not for a mounting system.
