The Best Tonneau Covers for a Truck With a Ladder Rack
Only a handful of covers publish a rail system built to carry anything. Here they are, and here is the rating that does not mean what people think it means.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Buy the RetraxONE XR if you want a rack over a sealed, locked bed. RETRAX publishes integrated T-slot rails on it specifically for racks, cargo holders, tents and crossbars — not as an afterthought.
A cover's load rating is not a rack rating. “400 lb evenly distributed” describes weight spread across the whole closed panel. A rack puts it on four small feet.
A full ladder rack is usually a bed-rail rack, not a cover rack. The practical question is whether your cover clears the rack legs, which is covered in the compatibility guide.
There are two different questions here
People searching for a tonneau cover and a ladder rack are usually asking one of two things, and they have different answers.
“Can I carry something on top of the cover?”
Sometimes, if the cover publishes a rail system intended for it. That is a short list and it is the list on this page: RETRAX's T-slot rails on the ONE XR and the Trax Rail System on the PowertraxPRO XR, and Syneticusa's rack-equipped MB models. Everything else is a closed panel with a load rating, which is not the same thing.
“Will my cover fit under my existing rack?”
Usually, and it is a clearance question rather than a load question. A real ladder rack bolts or clamps to the bed rails and stands over the bed, so the cover has to fit beneath the crossbars and the rail-mounted legs have to not land where the cover's rails need to go. Low-profile covers are the easy answer here, which is why the LOMAX Stance — published at half an inch above the bed rails — is on this page at all.
Why a load rating is not a rack rating
Every hard cover we have specs for publishes its rating the same way: a figure “evenly distributed”. The Extang Solid Fold ALX is 600 lb evenly distributed. The RetraxPRO MX is 500 lb. The BAKFlip MX4 is 400 lb. That phrase is load-bearing, in both senses. It describes weight spread across the whole closed panel area, which is how a flat sheet of plywood or a layer of snow behaves.
A rack does the opposite. It concentrates everything onto a handful of small feet, and the weight arrives with dynamic load every time you hit a pothole. No maker in our registry publishes a point-load figure for a cover panel, so there is no honest way to convert one number into the other — and we are not going to invent a conversion. What a load rating actually excludes goes through this in full. The rule that follows is simple: mount a rack to the truck, not to the cover, unless the cover publishes rails made for mounting things.
The five, and what each one publishes
| Cover | Rail system published | Cover load rating | Why it is here |
|---|---|---|---|
| RetraxONE XR | Integrated T-slot rails for racks, tents, crossbars | 200 lb | The clearest published rack intent of any cover we have specs for |
| RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR | Trax Rail System, accepts most T-slot accessories | 500 lb | Rack rails plus the higher rating and powered operation |
| Extang Solid Fold ALX | None published | 600 lb | Highest published rating in the registry; a rigid base under a bed-rail rack |
| Syneticusa MB Electric | Some rack-equipped MB models listed | 600 lb capacity | Powered retractable sold in rack-equipped variants |
| LOMAX Stance | None published | 400 lb | Sits ½ inch above the rails, so clearance under a rack is rarely the problem |
Published manufacturer and specialist-retailer specifications, cited at the foot of this page. Load ratings are the makers' evenly-distributed figures for the closed cover, not point loads and not rack capacities. Always confirm a specific rack against a specific cover with both manufacturers before buying either.
Which one, for which job
Bikes, a rooftop tent or crossbars: RetraxONE XR
RETRAX publishes integrated T-slot rails in the aluminum side rails and tracks, explicitly for racks, cargo holders, tents and crossbars, and the cover is key-lockable in any position. The 200 lb cover rating is the lowest here and the published warranty term is one year, both of which belong in your decision — but no other cover in this registry states rack intent as plainly.
The same, but powered: PowertraxPRO XR
The Trax Rail System accepts most T-slot accessories, the cover is 500 lb evenly distributed, and remote operation with an electromagnetic brake means it stops wherever you let go. The warranty is 3 years, then prorated for life.
Ladders and lumber on a bed-rail rack: Extang Solid Fold ALX
If the rack carries the load and the cover's job is sealing the bed under it, buy the cover with the best panel and seal. The Solid Fold ALX publishes 600 lb evenly distributed on 1-inch TPO panels, triple-fin perimeter seals, and tool-free Jaw-Grip clamps — and it comes off without tools when the job needs an open bed.
Cheapest powered with rack variants: Syneticusa MB
6063-T5 aluminum, a published 600 lb load capacity, EPDM rubber seals and a dual-lock system, with some rack-equipped models listed as carrying lifetime terms against the 3 years on standard MB models. Verify the exact variant you are buying, because the published terms differ across them.
Three things to check before you buy either part
Confirm the rack's mounting feet do not land where the cover's rails clamp. Confirm the cover's closed height clears your crossbars. And confirm the rack manufacturer supports mounting to a tonneau cover at all, because most do not — a rack rated for bed rails is not rated for a cover panel, whatever the cover's own figure says.
What is deliberately not on this page
Covers that publish no rail system and no load rating, which is every soft cover we have specs for. Vinyl over bows carries nothing, and a rack mounted to bed rails above a soft cover is a clearance question we cannot answer generically — ask the rack maker about your exact rack and the cover maker about your exact cover. If the constraint you are actually working around is a toolbox rather than a rack, the toolbox page is the right one.
The picks in detail
#1 · T-slot rack compatibility
RetraxONE XR
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The T-slot retractable at the accessible end of the RETRAX range. Read the two published numbers before you buy: 200 lb, and one year.
What it does well
- Integrated T-slot rails at the lowest price in the RETRAX retractable line
- Key-lockable in any position, the same as the more expensive models
- Polycarbonate deck is lighter than the PRO's double-wall aluminum
Where it gives way
- 200 lb rating — a quarter of what the Extang folding covers publish and under half the RetraxPRO MX
- One-year warranty, against limited lifetime on the RetraxPRO MX
- Canister cost in bed length is the same as the expensive models without the matching durability numbers
Skip it if: Carrying anything meaningful on top — 200 lb is less than half what the PRO models publish.
| Construction | Aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate, aluminum side rails and tracks |
|---|---|
| Finish | Premium textured matte black |
| Load rating | 200 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited hassle-free, 1 year from purchase |
| Locking | Key-lockable in any position, 2x key-lockable security |
| Rails | Integrated T-slot rails for racks, cargo holders, tents, crossbars |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on, no cutting or drilling |

#2 · Opening the bed without touching it
RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR
RETRAX · Retractable (electric)
The electric retractable to beat: 500 lb rating, remote operation with an electromagnetic brake so it stops anywhere, and T-slot rails that take most third-party rack accessories.
What it does well
- 500 lb published rating, the highest of any retractable here
- The electromagnetic brake means it holds at any opening, not just fully open or closed
- T-slot rails are a genuine ecosystem rather than a proprietary dead end
Where it gives way
- The canister permanently occupies bed length at the bulkhead and cannot be removed for a tall load
- RETRAX does not publish canister dimensions, so you cannot plan around the loss before buying
- Powered operation adds a wiring step and a failure mode a manual cover does not have
Skip it if: Anyone who wants the bed length back. A retractable's canister lives at the bulkhead permanently, and it is not removable like a folding cover.
| Construction | Aluminum |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Operation | Remote activation with electromagnetic brake — stops at any point |
| Rails | Trax Rail System accepts most T-slot accessories |
| Warranty | 3 years, limited lifetime prorated thereafter |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Canister | Low-profile canister sits flush with the bed rails; exact dimensions not published |

#3 · Carrying load on top of the cover
Extang Solid Fold ALX
Extang · Hard folding
The highest published load rating in this roundup at 600 lb, on inch-thick TPO panels in an aluminum frame, with tool-free clamps and a five-year warranty.
What it does well
- 600 lb published rating is the highest here by 200 lb — the one cover in the group you can actually plan to load
- Inch-thick TPO panels are substantially more rigid than a thin aluminum skin
- Tool-free clamps, and removable without tools when you need the whole bed
Where it gives way
- Folded, access is two-thirds — the full-bed answer is taking the cover off, not folding it further
- Panel thickness means more weight to lift off than a thin folding cover
- Warranty text covers rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware; the panel itself is described separately
Skip it if: Anyone who needs more than two-thirds of the bed open at once without pulling the cover off the truck.
| Construction | 1-inch EnduraShield TPO panels, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 600 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None — tool-free Jaw-Grip clamps |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when folded; removable without tools for full access |
| Sealing | Triple-fin perimeter seals |

#4 · Powered retracting for less
Syneticusa MB Electric Retractable
Syneticusa · Retractable (electric)
The cheapest route into a powered retractable: 6063-T5 aluminum, a published 600 lb capacity and a dual-lock system, for a 3-year warranty rather than RETRAX's lifetime.
What it does well
- Powered retraction at a fraction of the RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR's price
- 600 lb published capacity and a named alloy rather than 'aerospace aluminum'
- EPDM seals and no-drill bolt-on fitting, same approach as the premium covers
Where it gives way
- 3-year warranty where RETRAX publishes limited lifetime on the manual PRO
- Published terms vary by model and listing, which makes the stated capacity harder to rely on
- Smaller dealer network than the established brands when something needs a part
Skip it if: Anyone who wants the warranty to match the claim — 600 lb is a bigger number than RETRAX publishes, behind a much shorter term.
| Construction | 6063-T5 aluminum |
|---|---|
| Load capacity | 600 lb |
| Sealing | EPDM rubber seals |
| Locking | Dual-lock system |
| Warranty | 3 years on MB models; some rack-equipped models listed as lifetime |
| Drilling | No-drill bolt-on installation |

#5 · The lowest profile
LOMAX Stance Hard Tri-Fold
LOMAX · Tri-fold (hard)
The flattest cover here: extruded aluminum panels sitting a published half-inch above the bed rails, carrying 400 lb. If the silhouette matters to you, this is the one.
What it does well
- Half an inch above the rails is a published figure, and it is the flattest in this registry
- Extruded aluminum panels rather than a folded skin — stiffer per millimeter of thickness
- Textured urethane finish wears better than paint on a surface people lean on
Where it gives way
- 3-year warranty where the class leaders publish 5
- LOMAX does not publish an install time or a drilling answer, so you are relying on the retailer listing
- The low profile leaves very little room for anything proud of the bed rails underneath
Skip it if: Buyers comparing warranties — three years, against five from BAK, Extang and UnderCover.
| Construction | Extruded aluminum panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Heavy-duty textured urethane |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited 3-year |
| Profile height | Sits ½ inch above the bed rails |
| Stated install time | Not published |

Common questions
Which tonneau cover works best with a ladder rack?
The RetraxONE XR if you want to mount to the cover itself - RETRAX publishes integrated T-slot rails on it for racks, cargo holders, tents and crossbars. If the rack mounts to the bed rails and the cover just has to fit underneath, the LOMAX Stance at half an inch above the rails is the easiest to clear.
Can you mount a ladder rack on top of a tonneau cover?
Only on covers that publish rails designed for it, and only with accessories the cover maker supports. A cover's load rating is published as a figure evenly distributed across the closed panel; a rack concentrates that weight onto a few small feet with dynamic loading. No maker in our registry publishes a point-load figure.
Does a 400 lb tonneau cover hold a 400 lb rack load?
No. 400 lb evenly distributed describes weight spread across the whole closed cover, like plywood or snow. There is no published conversion from an evenly-distributed rating to a point load, so do not treat the two as interchangeable. Mount racks to the truck unless the cover publishes rails for them.
Will a tonneau cover fit under my existing truck rack?
Usually, as a clearance question rather than a load question. Check that the rack's mounting feet do not sit where the cover's rails clamp, and that the closed cover clears the crossbars. Low-profile covers like the LOMAX Stance, published at half an inch above the bed rails, give you the most room to work with.
