The Best Tonneau Covers for the Ford Super Duty
On an 8 ft work-truck bed, the load rating is not a marketing number. Here are the covers that publish one worth having.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
On a Super Duty, buy on the load rating. An 8 ft cover is a large flat surface at working height, and people use it as one. Extang publishes 600 lb; most of the field publishes 400.
If there is a crossover toolbox at the bulkhead, the Extang Encore is the only cover here that opens from the front as well as the rear.
A cover with no published rating is rated for nothing. On a work truck that is a real limitation, not a technicality.
Super Duty generations and beds
| Generation | Years | Bed lengths sold | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current generation | 2023 onward | 6.75 ft, 8 ft | Order against this generation specifically |
| Previous generation | 2017-2022 | 6.75 ft, 8 ft | Aluminum body; broad aftermarket support |
Bed lengths are the nominal figures manufacturers key their fitment charts to. Measure your own bed from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate and give the retailer that number - it is the one that has to be right.
Why the rating matters here and not elsewhere
On a half-ton used for groceries and the occasional load, a cover's load rating is a number you will never test. On a Super Duty it usually is not. An 8 ft cover is a flat, waist-height surface in the middle of a job site, and it gets used as a bench, a staging area, a place to set a toolbox or a bag of fittings.
The published numbers in our registry:
- 600 lb — Extang Solid Fold ALX and Extang Encore, both on inch-thick panels.
- 500 lb — RetraxPRO MX and RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR.
- 400 lb — BAKFlip MX4 and F1, UnderCover UltraFlex and ArmorFlex, TruXedo Sentry CT, BAK Revolver X4s.
- 300 lb — BAKFlip G2, Gator FX3.
- Not published — Rough Country Low Profile, and every soft cover.
Every one of those is “evenly distributed”, which is doing more work than people assume — what that phrase excludes is worth five minutes before you stand on one.
If there is a toolbox
Crossover boxes and Super Duties go together. The box sits at the bulkhead, which is where every folding cover stacks and every retractable puts its canister. The Extang Encore solves it properly: Extang publishes it as a dual-access design that opens from the front as well as the rear, with the front panel secured by a BOLT one-key lock that codes to the truck's ignition key.
Everything else means walking to the tailgate and folding panels forward over the box. The full toolbox-access page covers the alternatives.
Which cover
Extang Solid Fold ALX
600 lb evenly distributed on 1-inch EnduraShield TPO panels in an aircraft-grade aluminum frame, tool-free Jaw-Grip clamps, triple-fin perimeter seals, 5-year limited warranty, removable without tools. The work-truck answer.
RetraxPRO MX
500 lb, limited lifetime warranty, key-lockable at any position, independent of the tailgate, temperature tested -40°F to 180°F, assembled in North Dakota. If the bed carries tools overnight, this is the security answer.
BAKFlip MX4
400 lb, 5 years, published 30-minute no-drill install. The sensible middle, and the one to buy if nothing heavy goes on top.
TruXedo Sentry CT
400 lb with up to six auto-engaging latches, interlocking aluminum slats under five-layer canvas, made in America, 5-year warranty covering the fabric. Hard-cover security in roll-up geometry.
Long beds and snow
An 8 ft cover collects a lot of snow, and wet snow is heavier than people estimate. Clear it rather than driving with a loaded cover — the winter guide runs the numbers.
The picks in detail
#1 · Carrying load on top of the cover
Extang Solid Fold ALX
Extang · Hard folding
The highest published load rating in this roundup at 600 lb, on inch-thick TPO panels in an aluminum frame, with tool-free clamps and a five-year warranty.
What it does well
- 600 lb published rating is the highest here by 200 lb — the one cover in the group you can actually plan to load
- Inch-thick TPO panels are substantially more rigid than a thin aluminum skin
- Tool-free clamps, and removable without tools when you need the whole bed
Where it gives way
- Folded, access is two-thirds — the full-bed answer is taking the cover off, not folding it further
- Panel thickness means more weight to lift off than a thin folding cover
- Warranty text covers rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware; the panel itself is described separately
Skip it if: Anyone who needs more than two-thirds of the bed open at once without pulling the cover off the truck.
| Construction | 1-inch EnduraShield TPO panels, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 600 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None — tool-free Jaw-Grip clamps |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when folded; removable without tools for full access |
| Sealing | Triple-fin perimeter seals |

#2 · A retractable that will outlast the truck
RetraxPRO MX
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
- Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
- Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story
Where it gives way
- The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
- Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
- Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating
Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.
| Construction | Double-wall aluminum slats |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime, non-transferable |
| Locking | Key-lockable TraxLatch handle, infinite locking positions |
| Stated install time | Less than 60 minutes |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on rails, four quick-attach clamps |
| Temperature tested | -40°F to 180°F |
| Sealing | Integrated water management with drain tubes |
| Origin | Assembled in Grand Forks, North Dakota |

#3 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#4 · A toolbox at the bulkhead
Extang Encore
Extang · Hard folding
The folding cover that opens from both ends. Front-panel access via a BOLT one-key lock plus the usual rear access makes it the answer when a toolbox or a bulkhead box lives at the front of the bed.
What it does well
- Dual access front and rear is genuinely rare and solves the bulkhead-toolbox problem properly
- 600 lb rating matches the Solid Fold ALX
- The BOLT front lock uses the key already in your pocket — one fewer key on the ring
Where it gives way
- 3-year warranty is shorter than the Solid Fold ALX's 5
- BOLT locks code permanently to one vehicle and cannot be re-coded, so the cover's lock does not follow you to a new truck
- Two access points mean two seal paths to keep clean
Skip it if: Anyone who changes trucks often — the BOLT lock codes permanently to one ignition key and cannot be re-keyed.
| Construction | EnduraShield automotive-grade polymer panels, aluminum frame and hinges |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat on frame and hinges |
| Load rating | 600 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 3 years |
| Drilling | None — no-drill install |
| Bed access | Front AND rear — dual-access design |
| Front lock | BOLT one-key technology, codes to the truck's ignition key |
| Removal | Attaches or removes in seconds, no tools |
Specifications read from RealTruck — Extang Encore published specifications.

#5 · Security without losing the roll
TruXedo Sentry CT
TruXedo · Roll-up (hard)
Interlocking aluminum slats under a five-layer canvas skin: a 400 lb rating and up to six auto-engaging latches in a cover that still rolls up instead of folding.
What it does well
- 400 lb rating on a roll-up, which usually means a folding cover or nothing
- Up to six latches that engage automatically — no walking the bed to lock each one
- Warranty explicitly covers the fabric as well as the hard parts, which soft covers rarely do
Where it gives way
- The rolled slat bundle permanently occupies the front of the bed
- An hour to fit, where a soft roll-up is thirty minutes
- Canvas over slats is more surface to keep clean than a plain aluminum panel
Skip it if: Anyone who assumes a hard roll-up gives a clear bed. Rolled up, the slat bundle sits at the bulkhead and stays there.
| Construction | Interlocking aluminum slats with RTxTechWeave 5-layer, 120-grade canvas |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited, covering hard parts and fabric |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Locking | Level-2 locks, tension cable, up to 6 auto-engaging latches |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on with no-drill self-leveling rails |
| Origin | Made in America |
Specifications read from RealTruck — TruXedo Sentry CT published specifications.

#6 · Full bed access on a budget
TruXedo TruXport
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.
What it does well
- Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
- 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
- Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box
Where it gives way
- Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
- Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
- Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks
Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.
| Construction | Vinyl over a clamp-on aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Bed access | 100 percent — rolls forward to the cab |
| Mounting | Clamp-on, vehicle-specific hardware included |

Common questions
What is the best tonneau cover for a Ford Super Duty?
The Extang Solid Fold ALX, because on a work truck the load rating is the spec that matters and 600 lb evenly distributed is 200 lb clear of anything else we have compared. If the bed carries tools overnight, the RetraxPRO MX is the better buy at 500 lb with a limited lifetime warranty and locking that is independent of the tailgate.
Can you stand on a tonneau cover?
Only within the published rating, and 'evenly distributed' specifically excludes a point load. A person standing on one panel is a point load. Covers with no published rating — including every soft cover and the Rough Country Low Profile — should be treated as rated for nothing.
Which tonneau cover works with a crossover toolbox on a Super Duty?
The Extang Encore. Extang publishes it as a dual-access cover that opens from the front as well as the rear, with the front panel secured by a BOLT one-key lock. It is the only cover in our registry with that capability, and a crossover box at the bulkhead is exactly the problem it solves.
What bed lengths does the Ford Super Duty come in?
6.75 ft and 8 ft across the current generation from 2023 and the 2017-2022 truck. Order against the generation as well as the bed length — the two are separate fitments.
