Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
An HD bed is not a 1500 bed. The 2500HD and 3500HD take 6'9" and 8' beds with their own part numbers. A 1500 cover does not fit.
Buy on load rating and lock design. Extang publishes 600 lb; RETRAX publishes 500 lb with independent locking.
The dually question: bed width is unchanged on a dual-rear-wheel truck, so cover fitment follows the bed, not the axle.
Silverado HD generations and beds
| Generation | Years | Bed lengths sold | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current generation | 2020 onward | 6'9", 8' | Separate fitment from the Silverado 1500 |
| Previous generation | 2015-2019 | 6'6", 8' | Note the different short-bed length from the current truck |
Bed lengths are the nominal figures manufacturers key their fitment charts to. Measure your own bed from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate and give the retailer that number - it is the one that has to be right.
The thing people get wrong
A Silverado 2500HD is not a taller Silverado 1500. The bed is a different structure with different dimensions, and the short bed on the current HD is 6'9" where the 1500's long bed is 6'6". Those three inches are the difference between a cover that latches and one that does not.
Compounding it: the HD short bed changed length between generations, from 6'6" on the 2015-2019 truck to 6'9" on the current one. Order against your generation and your measured bed, not against the nominal description.
What to buy on, in order
1. Load rating
HD beds get used as working surfaces. Extang publishes 600 lb evenly distributed on the Solid Fold ALX, which is the highest here. RETRAX publishes 500 lb on the PRO MX. BAK, UnderCover and TruXedo cluster at 400 lb. Rough Country publishes nothing, which on a work truck is a real constraint.
2. Lock independence
If tools stay in the bed, you want a cover that locks without the tailgate. The RetraxPRO MX is published as operating independently of the tailgate with a key-lockable handle at infinite positions. The TruXedo Sentry CT uses level-2 locks and up to six auto-engaging latches.
3. Tailgate behavior
On a truck where the tailgate gets used constantly, UnderCover's dual-action tailgate seal on the ArmorFlex lets it drop without unlatching the cover. It is a small thing with a high daily frequency.
Dual rear wheels do not change the cover
A dually's extra width is in the fenders, not the bed box. Tonneau cover fitment follows the bed dimensions, so a 3500HD dually takes the same cover as a single-rear-wheel 3500HD with the same bed length. Confirm it in the retailer's selector, but it is not the complication people expect.
Which cover
Extang Solid Fold ALX if anything goes on the cover. RetraxPRO MX if tools stay in the bed overnight. BAKFlip MX4 as the sensible middle at 400 lb and a 5-year warranty. UnderCover ArmorFlex if the tailgate gets constant use. Rough Country Low Profile only if the budget demands it, and with the understanding that it publishes no load rating.
The picks in detail
#1 · Carrying load on top of the cover
Extang Solid Fold ALX
Extang · Hard folding
The highest published load rating in this roundup at 600 lb, on inch-thick TPO panels in an aluminum frame, with tool-free clamps and a five-year warranty.
What it does well
- 600 lb published rating is the highest here by 200 lb — the one cover in the group you can actually plan to load
- Inch-thick TPO panels are substantially more rigid than a thin aluminum skin
- Tool-free clamps, and removable without tools when you need the whole bed
Where it gives way
- Folded, access is two-thirds — the full-bed answer is taking the cover off, not folding it further
- Panel thickness means more weight to lift off than a thin folding cover
- Warranty text covers rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware; the panel itself is described separately
Skip it if: Anyone who needs more than two-thirds of the bed open at once without pulling the cover off the truck.
| Construction | 1-inch EnduraShield TPO panels, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 600 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None — tool-free Jaw-Grip clamps |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when folded; removable without tools for full access |
| Sealing | Triple-fin perimeter seals |

#2 · A retractable that will outlast the truck
RetraxPRO MX
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
- Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
- Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story
Where it gives way
- The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
- Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
- Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating
Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.
| Construction | Double-wall aluminum slats |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime, non-transferable |
| Locking | Key-lockable TraxLatch handle, infinite locking positions |
| Stated install time | Less than 60 minutes |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on rails, four quick-attach clamps |
| Temperature tested | -40°F to 180°F |
| Sealing | Integrated water management with drain tubes |
| Origin | Assembled in Grand Forks, North Dakota |

#3 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#4 · Security without losing the roll
TruXedo Sentry CT
TruXedo · Roll-up (hard)
Interlocking aluminum slats under a five-layer canvas skin: a 400 lb rating and up to six auto-engaging latches in a cover that still rolls up instead of folding.
What it does well
- 400 lb rating on a roll-up, which usually means a folding cover or nothing
- Up to six latches that engage automatically — no walking the bed to lock each one
- Warranty explicitly covers the fabric as well as the hard parts, which soft covers rarely do
Where it gives way
- The rolled slat bundle permanently occupies the front of the bed
- An hour to fit, where a soft roll-up is thirty minutes
- Canvas over slats is more surface to keep clean than a plain aluminum panel
Skip it if: Anyone who assumes a hard roll-up gives a clear bed. Rolled up, the slat bundle sits at the bulkhead and stays there.
| Construction | Interlocking aluminum slats with RTxTechWeave 5-layer, 120-grade canvas |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited, covering hard parts and fabric |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Locking | Level-2 locks, tension cable, up to 6 auto-engaging latches |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on with no-drill self-leveling rails |
| Origin | Made in America |
Specifications read from RealTruck — TruXedo Sentry CT published specifications.

#5 · Daily tailgate use
UnderCover ArmorFlex
UnderCover · Hard folding
Aluminum panels with UnderCover's Multi-Shield coating and a dual-action tailgate seal that lets the tailgate drop without unlatching the cover — a small thing you use every single day.
What it does well
- Dual-action tailgate seal means the tailgate drops without unlatching the cover first
- Prop rods give a genuine full-access position rather than only the two-thirds strap position
- Multi-Shield coating is specifically an abrasion and impact claim, not just a color
Where it gives way
- Warranty is original-owner only and needs registering — it does not follow the truck
- Two-thirds access is the quick position; full access needs the prop rods set up
- Assembled in Missouri but published spec sheets omit cover weight
Skip it if: Buyers who want a transferable warranty. Published coverage is original-owner only and requires registration.
| Construction | Aluminum panels with Multi-Shield coating |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black textured |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited, original owner only, registration required |
| Stated install time | Under 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None on most vehicles |
| Bed access | Two-thirds via straps, or full with integrated prop rods |
| Sealing | EPDM seals, integrated drain tubes, dual-action tailgate seal |
Specifications read from RealTruck — UnderCover ArmorFlex published specifications.

#6 · The lowest price in hard panels
Rough Country Hard Low Profile Bed Cover
Rough Country · Tri-fold (hard)
The cheapest aluminum-panel tri-fold worth listing: powder-coated aluminum frame, aluminum panels, drain tubes, 5-year warranty. Rough Country does not publish a load rating, and that absence is the honest headline.
What it does well
- Published per-bed cover weights, which most makers omit — 51.65 lb at 5'7" tells you it is a one-person lift
- 5-year warranty at a price where 1-2 years is normal
- Drain tubes included rather than sold as an upgrade
Where it gives way
- No published load rating at all — if you intend to put weight on the cover, buy something that states a number
- Published install and drilling details are thin
- Finish and hardware are built to the price; clamps need re-checking more often than premium covers
Skip it if: Anyone who needs to know what the cover will carry — there is no published load rating to go on.
| Construction | Aluminum panels, corrosion-resistant black powder-coated aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | Not published |
| Warranty | 5-year (certain models listed as limited lifetime) |
| Cover weight | 51.65 lb for the 5'7" bed; 59.50 lb for the 6'7" |
| Sealing | Track and rail mounting system with drain tubes |

Common questions
Will a Silverado 1500 tonneau cover fit a 2500HD?
No. The HD bed is a different structure with its own dimensions and part numbers. The current HD short bed is 6'9" where the 1500's long bed is 6'6" — three inches that decide whether a cover latches.
What is the best tonneau cover for a Silverado 2500HD?
The Extang Solid Fold ALX if anything goes on top of the cover, at a published 600 lb evenly distributed. The RetraxPRO MX if the bed carries tools overnight — 500 lb, limited lifetime warranty, and it locks independently of the tailgate.
Does a dually take a different tonneau cover?
No. A dual-rear-wheel truck's extra width is in the fenders, not the bed box, so cover fitment follows the bed length as on any truck. Confirm it in the retailer's selector, but it is not the complication people expect.
What bed lengths does the Silverado HD come in?
6'9" and 8' on the current generation from 2020. The 2015-2019 generation used 6'6" and 8', so the short bed changed length between generations — order against your generation and your measured bed rather than the nominal description.
