The Best Tonneau Covers for the Ram 2500 and 3500

Heavy-duty beds, heavy-duty priorities. And RamBox is still the first thing to check.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.

What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.

The short answer

RamBox is available on heavy duty too, and it changes the part number here exactly as it does on the 1500. Check your bed walls first.

Two beds: 6'4" and 8'.

Buy on load rating. Extang publishes 600 lb; the field mostly publishes 400.

RamBox applies to the HD trucks as well

If your Ram 2500 or 3500 has lockable compartments built into the bed walls, it is a RamBox truck and needs a RamBox-specific cover. A standard cover of the same nominal bed length will not fit, and not every manufacturer offers a RamBox version. The RamBox page covers what changes.

Ram HD generations and beds

Ram 2500 / 3500 generations and bed lengths
GenerationYearsBed lengths soldWorth knowing
Current generation2019 onward6'4", 8'RamBox available on both
Previous generation2010-20186'4", 8'RamBox available; separate fitment from the current truck

Bed lengths are the nominal figures manufacturers key their fitment charts to. Measure your own bed from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate and give the retailer that number - it is the one that has to be right.

What matters on a Ram HD

Same priorities as any heavy duty: load rating first, lock independence second, tailgate behavior third. An 8 ft Ram bed is a large working surface and gets treated as one.

Extang Solid Fold ALX — 600 lb

Inch-thick EnduraShield TPO panels in an aircraft-grade aluminum frame, tool-free Jaw-Grip clamps, triple-fin perimeter seals, 5-year limited warranty on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware, removable without tools. Assembled in Michigan.

RetraxPRO MX — 500 lb and the best lock

Double-wall aluminum slats, key-lockable TraxLatch handle with infinite locking positions, operates independently of the tailgate, integrated water management with drain tubes, temperature tested -40°F to 180°F, limited lifetime warranty. The pick if the bed carries tools.

Extang Encore — if there is a toolbox

600 lb and the only dual-access cover here: it opens from the front as well as the rear, with the front panel on a BOLT one-key lock. On an HD truck with a crossover box at the bulkhead, that front access is the feature you buy it for. 3-year warranty, no-drill install, removable in seconds without tools.

BAKFlip MX4 — the sensible middle

400 lb, 5-year warranty, published 30-minute no-drill install, revised EPDM seals and integrated drainage.

Is a soft cover ever right on an HD truck?

Sometimes, and it is worth saying rather than assuming not. A Ram 2500 used as a tow vehicle and family truck — bed mostly empty, occasional furniture run, nothing valuable left in it — has the same cover requirements as a half-ton. The TruXedo TruXport rolls fully forward for genuine 100 percent bed access at a fraction of the cost, fits in 30 minutes, and carries a 5-year warranty. Buy for how the truck is used, not for its payload badge.

The picks in detail

#1 · Carrying load on top of the cover

Extang Solid Fold ALX

Extang · Hard folding

The highest published load rating in this roundup at 600 lb, on inch-thick TPO panels in an aluminum frame, with tool-free clamps and a five-year warranty.

Security8.5
Weather sealing8.5
Bed access7.5
Install effort8.5
Durability9.0
Value7.5
8.3overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • 600 lb published rating is the highest here by 200 lb — the one cover in the group you can actually plan to load
  • Inch-thick TPO panels are substantially more rigid than a thin aluminum skin
  • Tool-free clamps, and removable without tools when you need the whole bed

Where it gives way

  • Folded, access is two-thirds — the full-bed answer is taking the cover off, not folding it further
  • Panel thickness means more weight to lift off than a thin folding cover
  • Warranty text covers rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware; the panel itself is described separately

Skip it if: Anyone who needs more than two-thirds of the bed open at once without pulling the cover off the truck.

#2 · A retractable that will outlast the truck

RetraxPRO MX

RETRAX · Retractable (manual)

The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.

Security9.0
Weather sealing8.5
Bed access8.5
Install effort7.5
Durability9.0
Value7.0
8.4overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
  • Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
  • Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story

Where it gives way

  • The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
  • Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
  • Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating

Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.

#3 · Most truck owners

BAKFlip MX4

BAK Industries · Hard folding

The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.

Security8.5
Weather sealing8.5
Bed access8.0
Install effort9.0
Durability8.5
Value8.0
8.4overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
  • The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
  • Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
  • 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket

Where it gives way

  • Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
  • Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
  • No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker

Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.

#4 · A toolbox at the bulkhead

Extang Encore

Extang · Hard folding

The folding cover that opens from both ends. Front-panel access via a BOLT one-key lock plus the usual rear access makes it the answer when a toolbox or a bulkhead box lives at the front of the bed.

Security8.5
Weather sealing8.0
Bed access9.0
Install effort8.5
Durability8.5
Value7.5
8.3overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • Dual access front and rear is genuinely rare and solves the bulkhead-toolbox problem properly
  • 600 lb rating matches the Solid Fold ALX
  • The BOLT front lock uses the key already in your pocket — one fewer key on the ring

Where it gives way

  • 3-year warranty is shorter than the Solid Fold ALX's 5
  • BOLT locks code permanently to one vehicle and cannot be re-coded, so the cover's lock does not follow you to a new truck
  • Two access points mean two seal paths to keep clean

Skip it if: Anyone who changes trucks often — the BOLT lock codes permanently to one ignition key and cannot be re-keyed.

#5 · Full bed access on a budget

TruXedo TruXport

TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)

The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.

Security4.0
Weather sealing6.5
Bed access9.5
Install effort9.5
Durability6.5
Value9.0
7.6overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
  • 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
  • Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box

Where it gives way

  • Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
  • Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
  • Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks

Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.

Common questions

What is the best tonneau cover for a Ram 2500?

The Extang Solid Fold ALX at a published 600 lb evenly distributed if anything goes on top of the cover, or the RetraxPRO MX at 500 lb with a limited lifetime warranty and tailgate-independent locking if the bed carries tools overnight. The BAKFlip MX4 is the sensible middle at 400 lb.

Does RamBox affect tonneau cover fitment on a Ram 2500?

Yes, exactly as it does on the 1500. RamBox narrows the usable bed between the rails and requires a different cover part number, and not every manufacturer offers one. Check your bed walls for lidded compartments before ordering.

What bed lengths do the Ram 2500 and 3500 come in?

6'4" and 8' on both the current generation from 2019 and the 2010-2018 truck. Order against the generation as well as the bed length, and check the RamBox question first.

Is a soft tonneau cover a bad idea on a heavy duty truck?

Not if the truck is used like a family vehicle with a mostly empty bed. Buy for how the truck is actually used rather than its payload rating — a TruXedo TruXport gives genuine 100 percent bed access, fits in 30 minutes and carries a 5-year warranty for a fraction of a hard cover's cost.
