The Best Tonneau Covers for a Ram 1500 With RamBox
The most expensive fitment mistake in this category has its own page, because it deserves one.

What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Look at your bed walls. If there are lidded, lockable compartments built into them, you have RamBox and you need a RamBox-specific cover.
A standard 5'7" Ram cover will not fit a 5'7" RamBox bed. The bed length is the same; the usable width between the rails is not.
Not every manufacturer offers a RamBox version of every cover. Check availability before you settle on a model.
What RamBox actually changes
RamBox is Ram's factory cargo-management option: lockable, drainable storage compartments built into the bed walls on both sides, running most of the bed length. They are genuinely useful and they are the reason a lot of people buy the truck.
For a tonneau cover, the consequence is geometric. The compartments occupy the inside of the bed walls, which narrows the span between the rails and moves the mounting surface. The bed is the same length front to back and a different shape across. A cover built for the standard bed will be too wide to drop into a RamBox bed, and a cover built for RamBox will be too narrow for a standard one.
Confirming before you order
- Visual check. Open the driver-side bed wall. If there is a hinged lid with a lock revealing a weatherproofed compartment, that is RamBox.
- Window sticker or build sheet. RamBox appears as a named option.
- The retailer's fitment selector asks the RamBox question explicitly on every Ram listing. Answer it honestly — it is there precisely because this mistake is so common.
- Measure the usable width between the inner faces of the bed rails if you are still unsure, and give the retailer that figure alongside the bed length.
Which covers are offered
Most major manufacturers tool a RamBox variant of their mainstream covers, because RamBox take-up is high enough to justify it. BAK, Extang, RETRAX, UnderCover and TruXedo all offer RamBox-specific part numbers across much of their ranges.
What thins out is the long tail. A budget cover or a less common model may simply not exist in a RamBox version, and the honest advice is to shortlist from what is offered rather than deciding on a cover and then hunting for a RamBox variant that may not exist.
Which cover for a RamBox truck
BAKFlip MX4
400 lb evenly distributed, 5-year warranty, published 30-minute no-drill clamp-on fit, revised EPDM perimeter seals with integrated drainage. The default for the same reasons as on any Ram.
RetraxPRO MX
500 lb, limited lifetime warranty, key-lockable at any position along the bed, independent of the tailgate. Worth noting that a RamBox truck already has secure lockable storage in the walls, so the case for a retractable's security is partly already met — and the canister still costs bed length.
Extang Solid Fold ALX
600 lb on inch-thick TPO panels, tool-free clamps, triple-fin seals, 5-year warranty, removable without tools.
TruXedo TruXport
Published 100 percent bed access rolled forward, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty. On a RamBox truck where the valuables already live in the wall compartments, a soft cover over the open bed is a perfectly coherent setup.
RamBox changes the security calculus
A RamBox truck already has lockable, weatherproofed storage that does not depend on the tonneau cover at all. If the things you were worried about securing fit in the wall compartments, the cover is doing weather and privacy duty rather than security duty — and the cheaper cover becomes the right answer.
The picks in detail
#1 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#2 · A retractable that will outlast the truck
RetraxPRO MX
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
- Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
- Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story
Where it gives way
- The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
- Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
- Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating
Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.
| Construction | Double-wall aluminum slats |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime, non-transferable |
| Locking | Key-lockable TraxLatch handle, infinite locking positions |
| Stated install time | Less than 60 minutes |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on rails, four quick-attach clamps |
| Temperature tested | -40°F to 180°F |
| Sealing | Integrated water management with drain tubes |
| Origin | Assembled in Grand Forks, North Dakota |

#3 · Carrying load on top of the cover
Extang Solid Fold ALX
Extang · Hard folding
The highest published load rating in this roundup at 600 lb, on inch-thick TPO panels in an aluminum frame, with tool-free clamps and a five-year warranty.
What it does well
- 600 lb published rating is the highest here by 200 lb — the one cover in the group you can actually plan to load
- Inch-thick TPO panels are substantially more rigid than a thin aluminum skin
- Tool-free clamps, and removable without tools when you need the whole bed
Where it gives way
- Folded, access is two-thirds — the full-bed answer is taking the cover off, not folding it further
- Panel thickness means more weight to lift off than a thin folding cover
- Warranty text covers rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware; the panel itself is described separately
Skip it if: Anyone who needs more than two-thirds of the bed open at once without pulling the cover off the truck.
| Construction | 1-inch EnduraShield TPO panels, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 600 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None — tool-free Jaw-Grip clamps |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when folded; removable without tools for full access |
| Sealing | Triple-fin perimeter seals |

#4 · Full bed access on a budget
TruXedo TruXport
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.
What it does well
- Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
- 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
- Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box
Where it gives way
- Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
- Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
- Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks
Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.
| Construction | Vinyl over a clamp-on aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Bed access | 100 percent — rolls forward to the cab |
| Mounting | Clamp-on, vehicle-specific hardware included |
Specifications read from RealTruck — TruXedo TruXport (Gen 2) published specifications.

Common questions
Will a regular Ram 1500 tonneau cover fit a RamBox bed?
No. RamBox compartments occupy the inside of the bed walls, which narrows the span between the rails and moves the mounting surface. The bed length is unchanged but the width is not, so a standard cover is too wide to drop in. It is the most expensive fitment mistake in this category.
How do I know if my Ram has RamBox?
Open the driver-side bed wall. If there is a hinged, lockable lid revealing a weatherproofed compartment, that is RamBox. It also appears by name on the window sticker and build sheet, and every retailer's Ram fitment selector asks about it explicitly.
Which tonneau covers are available for RamBox trucks?
BAK, Extang, RETRAX, UnderCover and TruXedo all tool RamBox-specific part numbers across much of their ranges. What thins out is the budget end and the less common models — shortlist from what is actually offered rather than picking a cover and hoping a RamBox variant exists.
Do I still need a secure tonneau cover if I have RamBox?
Often not. A RamBox truck already has lockable weatherproofed storage independent of the cover. If the things you wanted secured fit in the wall compartments, the tonneau cover is doing weather and privacy duty, and a soft cover becomes a perfectly coherent choice.
