Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.

What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.

The short answer

Buy the TruXedo TruXport. Published 30-minute no-drill fit, a 5-year warranty, and a full roll forward to the cab for 100 percent bed access — which is the whole reason to choose a roll-up on a truck people load as hard as a Ram.

If the bed carries tools, the TruXedo Sentry CT: aluminum slats, 400 lb evenly distributed, level-2 locks, a tension cable and up to six auto-engaging latches.

RamBox changes the cover, not just the size. If your Ram has the bedside storage boxes, the usable bed width is different and the part number is separate — the RamBox page is the one to read.

RamBox first, everything else second

This is the Ram-specific fork in the road and it comes before cover type, brand or budget. The RamBox cargo management option puts lockable storage boxes into both bedsides, which narrows the space between the inner bed walls where a tonneau cover's rails have to mount. Makers tool separate RamBox part numbers for it, and a non-RamBox cover will not fit a RamBox bed.

Work out which you have by looking into the bed, not by reading the window sticker: RamBox trucks have a hinged, lockable lid along the top of each bedside. If you see them, order RamBox fitment and nothing else. If you do not, the whole list below is available to you.

Then the bed length

The current Ram 1500 is sold with a 5'7" bed and a 6'4" bed, and older and heavy-duty configurations extend to 8 ft. The roll-up part number changes with each. Measure from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate along the floor and buy to that figure — the method is here, and the per-bed shortlists are on the 5'7" page and the 6'4" page.

Manufacturer and specialist-retailer published specifications, cited at the foot of this page. Install times are their claims for a clamp-on fit, not measured by us. All four soft covers here publish no load rating, which is correct rather than missing.

Which one, for which Ram owner

The default: TruXedo TruXport

A Ram 1500 bed is a nice place and the TruXport is the cover that interferes with it least: clamp-on, no drilling, no cutting, no modifications, a published 30 minutes, and a complete roll forward when you need all of it. The 5-year warranty is the category norm rather than a standout, which is fine at the price.

If you want flush: TruXedo Lo Pro

TruXedo publishes the Lo Pro at three-quarters of an inch above the bed rails on a gloss-black powder-coated frame, with leather-grained industrial vinyl and limited lifetime coverage against manufacturing and material defects. On a truck people buy partly for how it looks, that combination is the most persuasive argument on this page. The TruXport against the Lo Pro settles it properly.

If tools live in the bed: Sentry CT or Revolver X4s

Both are 400 lb aluminum-slat covers that roll rather than fold, so you keep most of the bed-access advantage and gain a rigid, latched surface. The Sentry CT wins on published lock detail; the Revolver X4s sits nearly flush and uses automatic slam latches, which is the better experience if you open the cover several times a day.

If price leads: Tyger T1 or Gator ETX

The Tyger T1 uses dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl over aircraft-grade aluminum rails with stainless clamps and an adjustable tension system — a lot of specification for the money. The Gator ETX is the honest-paperwork choice: 26.9 lb, made in the USA, and a warranty that splits lifetime on the frame from ten years on the tarp, which is a far more candid description of how a vinyl cover ages than a single headline number.

A soft cover is not a lock

Four of the six here secure with the tailgate lock and are made of vinyl. That is weather protection and privacy, and it is genuinely enough for most Ram owners. It is not security. What a cover actually stops, and the covers that really lock.

What you give up with a roll-up on a Ram

  • No load rating on the soft ones. Nothing goes on top — not a toolbox, not a bike, not a bag of feed.
  • Water management, not waterproofing. Expect some at the bulkhead and the tailgate in heavy rain. Where and why.
  • A bundle at the bulkhead when rolled, which costs a few inches of height against the front wall.
  • Vinyl needs looking after. UV is what kills a soft cover, and protecting it is a ten-minute job twice a year. How.

The picks in detail

#1 · Full bed access on a budget

TruXedo TruXport

TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)

The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.

Security4.0
Weather sealing6.5
Bed access9.5
Install effort9.5
Durability6.5
Value9.0
7.6overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
  • 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
  • Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box

Where it gives way

  • Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
  • Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
  • Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks

Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.

#2 · Security without losing the roll

TruXedo Sentry CT

TruXedo · Roll-up (hard)

Interlocking aluminum slats under a five-layer canvas skin: a 400 lb rating and up to six auto-engaging latches in a cover that still rolls up instead of folding.

Security8.5
Weather sealing8.0
Bed access8.0
Install effort8.0
Durability8.5
Value7.5
8.2overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • 400 lb rating on a roll-up, which usually means a folding cover or nothing
  • Up to six latches that engage automatically — no walking the bed to lock each one
  • Warranty explicitly covers the fabric as well as the hard parts, which soft covers rarely do

Where it gives way

  • The rolled slat bundle permanently occupies the front of the bed
  • An hour to fit, where a soft roll-up is thirty minutes
  • Canvas over slats is more surface to keep clean than a plain aluminum panel

Skip it if: Anyone who assumes a hard roll-up gives a clear bed. Rolled up, the slat bundle sits at the bulkhead and stays there.

#3 · A flush hard roll-up

BAK Revolver X4s

BAK Industries · Roll-up (hard)

Aluminum-reinforced vinyl over interlocking slats, sitting nearly flush with the rails, with rotational locking rails and automatic slam latches and a 400 lb rating.

Security8.5
Weather sealing8.0
Bed access8.0
Install effort8.0
Durability8.0
Value7.5
8.0overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • Nearly flush to the rails while still carrying a 400 lb rating
  • Automatic slam latches, so closing it is one motion
  • Aluminum-reinforced vinyl over slats resists the slat-edge wear that kills cheap hard roll-ups

Where it gives way

  • Warranty does not transfer with the truck
  • BAK's own guidance is to re-check every clamp after the first week — plan for it
  • Maintenance is specified as mild automotive soap and water only, which rules out most quick detailers

Skip it if: Second owners. BAK's published warranty is explicitly not transferable.

#4 · A soft cover that sits flush

TruXedo Lo Pro

TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)

The TruXport with the profile taken out of it: a published three-quarters of an inch above the rails, a leather-grained finish, and a limited lifetime warranty against defects.

Security4.0
Weather sealing7.0
Bed access8.5
Install effort8.5
Durability7.0
Value8.5
7.6overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • Limited lifetime defect warranty — the longest coverage in this registry
  • Three-quarters of an inch above the rails is a published figure and it looks it
  • Rails mount inside the bed, so the bed rail caps stay visible

Where it gives way

  • Nearly full access, not full — the rolled bundle and its buckles stay in the bed
  • Soft cover, so the security story is the same as every soft cover: there isn't one
  • An hour to fit rather than the TruXport's 30 minutes

Skip it if: Anyone expecting the whole bed clear. Rolled and buckled it gives nearly full access, not the TruXport's clean 100 percent.

#5 · The lowest price that still states its specs

Tyger Auto T1 Soft Roll-Up

Tyger Auto · Roll-up (soft)

The budget roll-up that actually publishes its materials: dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl on aircraft-grade aluminum rails with stainless clamps, and an adjustable tension system to keep it flat.

Security3.5
Weather sealing5.5
Bed access9.0
Install effort8.5
Durability6.0
Value9.0
7.0overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • 24 oz dual-coated vinyl is a real published figure, not 'heavy-duty vinyl'
  • Adjustable rail tension is the fix for the wrinkling that plagues cheap roll-ups
  • Stainless clamps rather than plated steel, which is where budget covers usually rust first

Where it gives way

  • The published warranty term is inconsistent between listings — check the one you are actually buying
  • Velcro side sealing is the weakest seal design in this registry and it is also the most common leak complaint on roll-ups
  • No published load rating, which is normal for soft covers but worth saying

Skip it if: Anyone who wants a single clear warranty answer — Tyger's published term varies by listing between five years and limited lifetime.

#6 · The clearest warranty terms

Gator ETX Soft Roll Up

Gator · Roll-up (soft)

What it does well

  • Publishes the frame and tarp warranties separately instead of hiding the shorter one
  • 26.9 lb is a published weight, and it is light enough to fit alone
  • Tool-free rails — nothing to borrow before you start

Where it gives way

  • Security is whatever your tailgate lock provides, and nothing more
  • Ten years on the tarp means the vinyl is the service item, as it is on every soft cover
  • Rolled up, the bundle sits at the bulkhead and stays there

Skip it if: Buyers who want the tarp covered as long as the frame — the ten-year tarp term is the real number.

Common questions

What is the best roll-up tonneau cover for a Ram 1500?

The TruXedo TruXport for most owners: a published 30-minute no-drill clamp-on fit, a 5-year warranty and 100 percent bed access rolled forward. For a bed that carries tools, the TruXedo Sentry CT - 400 lb, level-2 locks, a tension cable and up to six auto-engaging latches.

Do roll-up tonneau covers fit a Ram 1500 with RamBox?

Only in RamBox-specific fitment. The RamBox bedside storage boxes narrow the space the cover's rails mount into, so makers tool a separate part number. A standard Ram 1500 cover will not fit a RamBox bed - check the bedsides for hinged lockable lids before you order.

Which Ram 1500 bed lengths are roll-up covers sold for?

The current truck's 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 4 in beds, with 8 ft fitment on older and heavy-duty configurations. The part number changes with each. Measure from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate and buy to that figure rather than to the trim name.

Is a hard roll-up worth it over a soft one on a Ram?

If the bed holds tools, yes. The Sentry CT and Revolver X4s are both published at 400 lb evenly distributed with real multi-point latching, where the soft covers publish no rating and lock with the tailgate. If the bed holds mulch and lumber, the extra buys you nothing you will use.
