The Best Soft Tonneau Covers
Cheaper, lighter, faster to fit, and better for bed access than anything rigid. Here is exactly what you are giving up, and why it is often fine.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
A soft cover is weather protection and privacy. It is not security, and no amount of marketing changes that — vinyl is cuttable.
Buy the TruXedo TruXport for the best balance: 30 minutes to fit, a 5-year warranty, and genuine 100 percent bed access when rolled forward.
Buy the Extang Trifecta 2.0 if you intend to keep the truck — its limited lifetime warranty covers the vinyl, which soft covers almost always exclude.
The honest case for a soft cover
Most people who buy a hard cover do not need one. The bed carries a cooler, bags of mulch, a bike, the occasional hardware-store load — nothing that would survive being stolen because nothing is worth stealing. What they actually want is for the bed to stay dry and for the contents to stop being visible from the sidewalk.
A soft cover does both for a fraction of the price, fits in half an hour with no tools you do not already own, weighs 27 lb rather than 60, and gives you better bed access than any rigid cover can. If that describes your bed, the soft cover is not a compromise — it is the correct product and the hard cover is the overspend.
What it does not do, stated plainly
- It is not security. The material cuts, and the locking on most soft covers is whatever your tailgate lock provides. Treat it as a privacy screen that keeps rain out.
- It has no load rating. Not a low one — none. No soft cover in this registry publishes a figure, because the answer is zero. Snow accumulation matters for the same reason.
- The vinyl is the service item. Gator publishes a limited lifetime frame warranty and a ten-year tarp warranty, which tells you exactly which part wears out first.
The soft covers here, compared
| Cover | Shape | Material | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| TruXedo TruXport | Roll-up | Vinyl on clamp-on aluminum frame | 5 years |
| TruXedo Lo Pro | Roll-up, ¾ in above rails | Industrial-grade tear-resistant vinyl | Limited lifetime, defects |
| Extang Trifecta 2.0 | Tri-fold | Marine-grade tarp, aluminum frame | Limited lifetime, vinyl included |
| Gator ETX | Roll-up, 26.9 lb | Vinyl tarp on clamp-on rails | Lifetime frame, 10-year tarp |
| Tyger Auto T3 | Tri-fold | 24 oz dual-coated marine-grade vinyl | 5 years (US) |
| Tyger Auto T1 | Roll-up | 24 oz dual-coated marine-grade vinyl | Varies by listing |
Tyger publishes different warranty terms on different listings for the same cover — five years on some, limited lifetime on others. Check the listing you are actually buying.
Seals are the whole quality difference
On a soft cover the panel is vinyl either way. What separates a good one from a bad one is how it seals along the rails. Extang publishes adhesive-free triple-fin snap-on seals on the Trifecta 2.0 — they clip into the rail rather than sticking on with tape, so they do not peel in sun. Tyger uses Velcro side strips with an adjustable rail tension system, which is the budget approach and the most common source of leak complaints on cheap covers.
The tension system is not a gimmick: it exists because vinyl relaxes, and loose vinyl means the Velcro does not seat. Keeping it adjusted is part of owning a budget soft cover.
Budget a protectant into the purchase
Vinyl chalks under UV and nobody buys protectant for themselves. 303 Aerospace Protectant publishes SPF 40, is specifically listed for tonneau cover use, and each application is stated to last months. Two or three applications a year is the whole maintenance routine — the full version.
The picks in detail
#1 · Full bed access on a budget
TruXedo TruXport
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.
What it does well
- Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
- 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
- Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box
Where it gives way
- Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
- Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
- Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks
Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.
| Construction | Vinyl over a clamp-on aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Bed access | 100 percent — rolls forward to the cab |
| Mounting | Clamp-on, vehicle-specific hardware included |

#2 · A soft cover you keep
Extang Trifecta 2.0
Extang · Tri-fold (soft)
The soft tri-fold with the longest warranty: limited lifetime on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware and the vinyl itself, with adhesive-free snap-on seals instead of the stick-on strips cheap covers use.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime covering the vinyl as well as the frame — soft covers usually exclude the fabric
- Adhesive-free snap-on seals do not peel off in the sun the way stick-on strips do
- Tool-free install at Level 1 difficulty
Where it gives way
- Two-thirds bed access, where a roll-up gives you the whole bed
- Tri-fold geometry means the folded stack sits at the bulkhead taking height
- Still a soft cover — no load rating and no real security
Skip it if: Full bed access. Folded forward it gives two-thirds, and that is the published figure.

| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware and vinyl covering |
| Install difficulty | Level 1 — tool-free, no drilling |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when open |
| Sealing | Adhesive-free triple-fin snap-on seals |

#3 · A soft cover that sits flush
TruXedo Lo Pro
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The TruXport with the profile taken out of it: a published three-quarters of an inch above the rails, a leather-grained finish, and a limited lifetime warranty against defects.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime defect warranty — the longest coverage in this registry
- Three-quarters of an inch above the rails is a published figure and it looks it
- Rails mount inside the bed, so the bed rail caps stay visible
Where it gives way
- Nearly full access, not full — the rolled bundle and its buckles stay in the bed
- Soft cover, so the security story is the same as every soft cover: there isn't one
- An hour to fit rather than the TruXport's 30 minutes
Skip it if: Anyone expecting the whole bed clear. Rolled and buckled it gives nearly full access, not the TruXport's clean 100 percent.
| Construction | Industrial-grade tear-resistant vinyl, gloss-black powder-coated aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Leather-grained vinyl |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime against manufacturing and material defects |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour |
| Drilling | None — no-drill clamp-on mounting |
| Profile height | ¾ inch above the bed rails |
| Bed access | Roll to the bulkhead and buckle for nearly full access; tool-free removal |

#4 · The clearest warranty terms
Gator ETX Soft Roll Up
Gator · Roll-up (soft)
Made in the USA, 26.9 lb, tool-free clamp-on rails, and a frame warranty published as limited lifetime with ten years on the tarp. The clearest warranty split in the soft class.
What it does well
- Publishes the frame and tarp warranties separately instead of hiding the shorter one
- 26.9 lb is a published weight, and it is light enough to fit alone
- Tool-free rails — nothing to borrow before you start
Where it gives way
- Security is whatever your tailgate lock provides, and nothing more
- Ten years on the tarp means the vinyl is the service item, as it is on every soft cover
- Rolled up, the bundle sits at the bulkhead and stays there
Skip it if: Buyers who want the tarp covered as long as the frame — the ten-year tarp term is the real number.
| Construction | Vinyl tarp on clamp-on rails |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl |
| Cover weight | 26.9 lb |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime on the frame, 10 years on the tarp |
| Drilling | None — tool-free clamp-on rails |
| Bed access | Rolls up for full bed access |
| Locking | Secures with the tailgate lock |
| Origin | Made in the USA |

#5 · The lowest cost per year of use
Tyger Auto T3 Soft Tri-Fold
Tyger Auto · Tri-fold (soft)
The cheapest cover in this registry that still names its materials. Pre-assembled crossbars fold with the cover, which is the one design detail that separates a good budget tri-fold from a bad one.
What it does well
- Crossbars fold with the cover rather than needing to be lifted out — the detail that makes a budget tri-fold usable daily
- 24 oz dual-coated marine-grade vinyl is published, not vague
- Clamp-and-latch fit, no drilling, on a cover at the bottom of the market
Where it gives way
- Soft tri-fold access only — the folded stack lives at the bulkhead
- Vinyl at this price is the first thing to go; plan on a protectant routine
- Tailgate-dependent locking means an unlocked tailgate is an unlocked bed
Skip it if: A truck that lives outside in hard sun. Budget vinyl is the part that ages, and it ages fastest in UV.
| Construction | Dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Crossbars | Pre-assembled horizontal crossbars that fold with the cover |
| Install | Clamp-and-latch, no drilling |
| Locking | Lockable with the tailgate |
| Warranty | 5 years for US customers |

#6 · The lowest price that still states its specs
Tyger Auto T1 Soft Roll-Up
Tyger Auto · Roll-up (soft)
The budget roll-up that actually publishes its materials: dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl on aircraft-grade aluminum rails with stainless clamps, and an adjustable tension system to keep it flat.
What it does well
- 24 oz dual-coated vinyl is a real published figure, not 'heavy-duty vinyl'
- Adjustable rail tension is the fix for the wrinkling that plagues cheap roll-ups
- Stainless clamps rather than plated steel, which is where budget covers usually rust first
Where it gives way
- The published warranty term is inconsistent between listings — check the one you are actually buying
- Velcro side sealing is the weakest seal design in this registry and it is also the most common leak complaint on roll-ups
- No published load rating, which is normal for soft covers but worth saying
Skip it if: Anyone who wants a single clear warranty answer — Tyger's published term varies by listing between five years and limited lifetime.
| Construction | Dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl, aircraft-grade aluminum side rails |
|---|---|
| Clamps | Stainless steel |
| Sealing | Velcro side strips, latch lock at the tailgate |
| Tension | Adjustable tension system on the side rails |
| Warranty | Published as 5 years on some listings, limited lifetime on others |
| Drilling | None — no-drill clamp-on |

Common questions
Are soft tonneau covers worth it?
If the bed carries nothing worth stealing, yes. A soft cover keeps weather off and contents out of sight, fits in about 30 minutes with no drilling, costs a fraction of a hard cover, and gives better bed access than anything rigid. It is only the wrong purchase if you were counting on it for security.
How long do soft tonneau covers last?
The frame outlasts the vinyl, and manufacturers say so: Gator publishes a limited lifetime warranty on the ETX frame and ten years on its tarp. The practical lifespan of the vinyl depends mostly on UV exposure and whether a protectant is used, which is why a UV protectant is the highest-return accessory you can buy for one.
Do soft tonneau covers leak?
All tonneau covers let some water in — none are waterproof. Soft covers more so, because the side sealing is doing more work. Covers using adhesive-free snap-on seals, like the Extang Trifecta 2.0, seal better than the Velcro-strip approach on budget roll-ups. The leak points are the same on every type: bulkhead and tailgate.
Can you put anything on top of a soft tonneau cover?
No. No soft cover in this registry publishes a load rating, and the honest reading of that absence is zero. The same applies to snow — clear it rather than letting it accumulate.
