Solar and Smart Tonneau Covers
Solar covers and powered smart covers exist. Here is what we could verify about them, and what we deliberately will not claim.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Powered covers are well established. RETRAX publishes the PowertraxPRO XR with remote operation and an electromagnetic brake; Syneticusa publishes a 600 lb capacity powered cover at a lower price.
Solar-integrated covers are a real category but we could not verify published specifications to the standard this site applies, so we do not publish figures for them.
For most buyers the manual RetraxPRO MX is still the better purchase than anything powered.
What this category actually contains
Three distinct things get grouped under “smart” or “solar” covers, and it helps to separate them.
Powered covers
Retractables with a motor, operated by remote or by a button. Well established, with verifiable published specifications. RETRAX publishes the PowertraxPRO XR at 500 lb with remote activation and an electromagnetic brake that holds the cover anywhere in its travel, three years then prorated lifetime, and Trax Rail T-slot compatibility. Syneticusa publishes a 600 lb capacity on 6063-T5 aluminum with EPDM seals, a dual-lock system and a no-drill bolt-on fit, with a 3-year warranty on MB models.
Solar-integrated covers
Covers with photovoltaic panels on the deck, intended to generate power for the truck, an auxiliary battery or equipment. The category is real and products are being sold.
What we could not do is verify published specifications — output figures, battery capacities, load ratings, warranty terms — to the standard this site applies to everything else. Our rule is that every figure is cited to a published source we read, with the date, so rather than repeat marketing claims we cannot stand behind, we publish none.
Connected covers
Covers operated from a phone app or integrated with the truck's own systems. Mostly a feature layer on top of a powered cover rather than a distinct product type.
What this page will not tell you
An explicit limitation
We are not going to publish solar output figures, battery capacities or payback periods we cannot cite. On a fast-moving product category, repeating a manufacturer claim without a verifiable published source is exactly the failure mode this site exists to avoid. If a specification is not here, it is because we could not verify it — not because it does not exist.
If you are shopping this category, get the output figure, the warranty term and the load rating in writing from the seller before ordering, and treat a listing that cannot provide them as a listing to skip.
The questions worth asking in this category
- What is the published load rating? A cover with electronics in the deck still needs a rating, and it is the first thing to ask for.
- What exactly does the warranty cover, and for how long? Powered covers have more to go wrong. Syneticusa publishes 3 years on MB models; RETRAX publishes 3 years then prorated lifetime on the PowertraxPRO XR against a straight limited lifetime on the manual PRO MX.
- What happens when the power fails? Is there a manual override, and how does it work?
- How is it wired, and who does it? The power feed to the bed is the one install step in this whole category that is not straightforwardly DIY — what that involves.
- What is the dealer and parts network? On a product with a motor and a controller, parts availability is not a trivial consideration.
The one truck where this is easiest
An F-150 Lightning with Pro Power Onboard already has bed outlets and better electrical infrastructure at the rear than a conventional pickup, which makes a powered cover install a shorter conversation — covers for the Lightning.
The honest recommendation
For almost everyone, the manual RetraxPRO MX: same 500 lb rating as the powered RETRAX, a longer published warranty, temperature testing from -40°F to 180°F, and nothing electrical to fail. If you genuinely want powered, the PowertraxPRO XR is the one with the most complete published specification — powered against manual.
The picks in detail
#1 · Powered retracting for less
Syneticusa MB Electric Retractable
Syneticusa · Retractable (electric)
The cheapest route into a powered retractable: 6063-T5 aluminum, a published 600 lb capacity and a dual-lock system, for a 3-year warranty rather than RETRAX's lifetime.
What it does well
- Powered retraction at a fraction of the RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR's price
- 600 lb published capacity and a named alloy rather than 'aerospace aluminum'
- EPDM seals and no-drill bolt-on fitting, same approach as the premium covers
Where it gives way
- 3-year warranty where RETRAX publishes limited lifetime on the manual PRO
- Published terms vary by model and listing, which makes the stated capacity harder to rely on
- Smaller dealer network than the established brands when something needs a part
Skip it if: Anyone who wants the warranty to match the claim — 600 lb is a bigger number than RETRAX publishes, behind a much shorter term.
| Construction | 6063-T5 aluminum |
|---|---|
| Load capacity | 600 lb |
| Sealing | EPDM rubber seals |
| Locking | Dual-lock system |
| Warranty | 3 years on MB models; some rack-equipped models listed as lifetime |
| Drilling | No-drill bolt-on installation |

#2 · Opening the bed without touching it
RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR
RETRAX · Retractable (electric)
The electric retractable to beat: 500 lb rating, remote operation with an electromagnetic brake so it stops anywhere, and T-slot rails that take most third-party rack accessories.
What it does well
- 500 lb published rating, the highest of any retractable here
- The electromagnetic brake means it holds at any opening, not just fully open or closed
- T-slot rails are a genuine ecosystem rather than a proprietary dead end
Where it gives way
- The canister permanently occupies bed length at the bulkhead and cannot be removed for a tall load
- RETRAX does not publish canister dimensions, so you cannot plan around the loss before buying
- Powered operation adds a wiring step and a failure mode a manual cover does not have
Skip it if: Anyone who wants the bed length back. A retractable's canister lives at the bulkhead permanently, and it is not removable like a folding cover.
| Construction | Aluminum |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Operation | Remote activation with electromagnetic brake — stops at any point |
| Rails | Trax Rail System accepts most T-slot accessories |
| Warranty | 3 years, limited lifetime prorated thereafter |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Canister | Low-profile canister sits flush with the bed rails; exact dimensions not published |

#3 · A retractable that will outlast the truck
RetraxPRO MX
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
- Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
- Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story
Where it gives way
- The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
- Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
- Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating
Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.
| Construction | Double-wall aluminum slats |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime, non-transferable |
| Locking | Key-lockable TraxLatch handle, infinite locking positions |
| Stated install time | Less than 60 minutes |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on rails, four quick-attach clamps |
| Temperature tested | -40°F to 180°F |
| Sealing | Integrated water management with drain tubes |
| Origin | Assembled in Grand Forks, North Dakota |

Common questions
Are solar tonneau covers worth it?
We cannot tell you, because we could not verify published specifications for solar-integrated covers — output figures, battery capacities, warranty terms — to the standard this site applies. Rather than repeat marketing claims we cannot cite, we publish none. If you are shopping the category, get those figures in writing from the seller before ordering.
What is the best powered tonneau cover?
The RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR has the most complete published specification: 500 lb, remote activation with an electromagnetic brake that holds the cover anywhere in its travel, T-slot Trax rails, and three years then prorated lifetime. Syneticusa publishes a 600 lb capacity powered cover at a lower price with a 3-year warranty on MB models.
Should I buy a powered or manual retractable cover?
Manual, for almost everyone. The RetraxPRO MX carries the same 500 lb rating as the powered RETRAX with a straight limited lifetime warranty rather than three years then prorated, temperature testing from -40°F to 180°F, and no motor, controller, wiring or remote battery to fail.
What should I ask before buying a powered tonneau cover?
The published load rating, exactly what the warranty covers and for how long, what happens when the power fails and whether there is a manual override, how the power feed to the bed is wired and who does it, and what the dealer and parts network looks like. On a product with a motor and controller, parts availability is not trivial.
