The Best Tonneau Covers for the F-150 Lightning
Not an F-150 for fitment purposes, and the one truck here where a powered cover has a genuinely easy power source.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
A Lightning is a separate fitment from a gas F-150. Order against the Lightning specifically, even at the same nominal 5.5 ft bed length.
Range is a real reason to fit a cover here. An open bed is an air brake, and on an EV that cost shows up as range rather than fuel.
Pro Power Onboard makes a powered cover easy — there is already a bed outlet.
Lightning bed
| Generation | Years | Bed lengths sold | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| First generation | 2022 onward | 5.5 ft (one length) | Separate aftermarket fitment from the gas F-150 |
Bed lengths are the nominal figures manufacturers key their fitment charts to. Measure your own bed from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate and give the retailer that number - it is the one that has to be right.
Why it is a separate fitment
The Lightning shares a nominal 5.5 ft bed length with the gas F-150, which is why people assume covers interchange. The aftermarket does not treat them as interchangeable, and the reason is in the details: bodywork, bed rail hardware and the surrounding structure differ enough that manufacturers tool a Lightning part number separately.
The practical instruction is simple. In the retailer's fitment selector, pick F-150 Lightning, not F-150. If the selector does not list the Lightning for a cover you want, that cover is not offered for it.
The aerodynamic argument, which is better on an EV
Published tests on combustion trucks disagree about whether a tonneau cover improves fuel economy. A SEMA wind-tunnel study of 13 cover types reported about 5 percent less drag for just under an estimated 2 percent fuel improvement, with fiberglass and roll-up vinyl covers best at over 6.5 percent drag improvement. A Fast Lane Truck road test measured a 7.7 percent gain. A Consumer Reports road test measured a 4 percent loss.
What those results have in common is that the drag reduction is real and small, and the fuel effect is noisy. On an EV the same drag reduction shows up as range at highway speed, where aerodynamic losses dominate. We are not going to put a number on it, because nobody has published a Lightning-specific test we can cite — but the mechanism is the same one and it is the honest version of the argument. All three published tests, tabled.
Pro Power Onboard and powered covers
The single most awkward part of fitting a powered retractable to any truck is running a power feed to the bed. On a Lightning with Pro Power Onboard, the truck already has bed outlets.
That does not make a powered cover plug-and-play — the RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR is wired rather than plugged — but it does mean the electrical infrastructure at the back of the truck is substantially better than on a conventional pickup, and the install conversation with a shop is a shorter one.
Which cover
BAKFlip MX4
400 lb, 5 years, published 30-minute no-drill clamp-on install, EPDM seals with drainage. The default, as on any F-150.
RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR
500 lb, remote operation with an electromagnetic brake that holds the cover at any opening, T-slot Trax rails, no-drill install, 3-year warranty then prorated lifetime. The powered pick, and the Lightning is the truck where powered makes the most sense.
RetraxPRO MX
Same 500 lb rating, limited lifetime warranty, no motor. Still the better value of the two RETRAX models unless you specifically want remote operation.
TruXedo TruXport
Published 100 percent bed access rolled forward, 30 minutes, 5-year warranty. On a 5.5 ft bed, the type that gives back the most of it.
The picks in detail
#1 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#2 · Opening the bed without touching it
RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR
RETRAX · Retractable (electric)
The electric retractable to beat: 500 lb rating, remote operation with an electromagnetic brake so it stops anywhere, and T-slot rails that take most third-party rack accessories.
What it does well
- 500 lb published rating, the highest of any retractable here
- The electromagnetic brake means it holds at any opening, not just fully open or closed
- T-slot rails are a genuine ecosystem rather than a proprietary dead end
Where it gives way
- The canister permanently occupies bed length at the bulkhead and cannot be removed for a tall load
- RETRAX does not publish canister dimensions, so you cannot plan around the loss before buying
- Powered operation adds a wiring step and a failure mode a manual cover does not have
Skip it if: Anyone who wants the bed length back. A retractable's canister lives at the bulkhead permanently, and it is not removable like a folding cover.
| Construction | Aluminum |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Operation | Remote activation with electromagnetic brake — stops at any point |
| Rails | Trax Rail System accepts most T-slot accessories |
| Warranty | 3 years, limited lifetime prorated thereafter |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Canister | Low-profile canister sits flush with the bed rails; exact dimensions not published |

#3 · A retractable that will outlast the truck
RetraxPRO MX
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
- Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
- Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story
Where it gives way
- The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
- Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
- Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating
Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.
| Construction | Double-wall aluminum slats |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime, non-transferable |
| Locking | Key-lockable TraxLatch handle, infinite locking positions |
| Stated install time | Less than 60 minutes |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on rails, four quick-attach clamps |
| Temperature tested | -40°F to 180°F |
| Sealing | Integrated water management with drain tubes |
| Origin | Assembled in Grand Forks, North Dakota |

#4 · Full bed access on a budget
TruXedo TruXport
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.
What it does well
- Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
- 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
- Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box
Where it gives way
- Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
- Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
- Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks
Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.
| Construction | Vinyl over a clamp-on aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Bed access | 100 percent — rolls forward to the cab |
| Mounting | Clamp-on, vehicle-specific hardware included |

Common questions
Will a regular F-150 tonneau cover fit an F-150 Lightning?
Not reliably. Although the Lightning shares a nominal 5.5 ft bed length with the gas truck, the aftermarket tools a separate part number because the bodywork and bed rail hardware differ. Select F-150 Lightning in the retailer's fitment selector, not F-150.
Does a tonneau cover improve range on an F-150 Lightning?
The mechanism is real but nobody has published a Lightning-specific test we can cite. Published tests on combustion trucks show a small, noisy effect — roughly 5 percent less drag for just under 2 percent fuel improvement in a SEMA wind-tunnel study, a 7.7 percent gain in one road test, a 4 percent loss in another. On an EV the same drag reduction appears as highway range rather than fuel.
Is a powered tonneau cover easier to fit on a Lightning?
The electrical side is easier. Pro Power Onboard means the truck already has bed outlets and better electrical infrastructure at the back than a conventional pickup. The RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR is still wired rather than plugged in, but the install conversation is a shorter one.
What size bed does the F-150 Lightning have?
5.5 ft, in one length only. That makes ordering simple once you have selected the Lightning rather than the gas F-150 in the fitment selector.
