The Best Electric Tonneau Covers
What a motor genuinely buys you, what it adds as a failure mode, and why the manual version of the same cover is usually the better purchase.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
If you want electric, buy the RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR. 500 lb, remote operation, and an electromagnetic brake that holds the cover at any opening rather than only fully open or closed.
Read this first, though: the manual RetraxPRO MX carries the same 500 lb rating with a longer published warranty — limited lifetime against three years then prorated — and has no motor to fail. For most buyers that is the better purchase.
What the motor actually buys
Two things, and it is worth being precise about them because the marketing is vague.
Operation with full hands. You press a remote and the bed opens. If you load the truck several times a day carrying things, that is a genuine daily improvement, not a novelty.
Stopping anywhere. RETRAX publishes an electromagnetic brake on the PowertraxPRO XR, which holds the cover at any point along its travel. Manual retractables lock at any position too, but the powered version does it without you reaching in to hold the slats while you latch.
What the motor does not buy: a higher load rating, better sealing, a better lock, or a longer warranty. On the RETRAX pair, the powered model has the shorter warranty of the two.
The powered covers here
| Cover | Power | Load rating | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR | Remote, electromagnetic brake | 500 lb | 3 years, then prorated lifetime |
| Syneticusa MB | Powered, dual-lock system | 600 lb | 3 years (MB models) |
| RetraxPRO MX (manual) | None — hand operated | 500 lb | Limited lifetime, non-transferable |
The manual cover is in this table deliberately. If you are shopping for electric, it is the option you should price against before deciding.
The failure mode you are adding
A manual retractable is a mechanism: rollers, slats, a latch. A powered one is that plus a motor, a controller, a wiring run to the truck's electrical system, and a remote with a battery. Each of those is a thing that can stop working on a cover you cannot easily open by hand when it does.
This is not an argument against powered covers — it is an argument for weighing the warranty, which is exactly where the powered models are weaker. Syneticusa publishes three years on MB models. RETRAX publishes three years then prorated lifetime on the PowertraxPRO XR against a straight limited lifetime on the manual PRO MX.
Wiring is the one install worth paying for
Every cover in this registry is a no-drill clamp-on fit, and nearly all of them are a straightforward DIY job. A powered retractable is the exception: it needs a power feed run to the bed. If you are not comfortable doing that properly, this is the job to hand to a shop — what that actually involves.
On the cheaper powered option
Syneticusa publishes a 600 lb capacity on 6063-T5 aluminum with EPDM seals, a dual-lock system and a no-drill bolt-on fit, at considerably less than the RETRAX. That is a real specification with a named alloy, which is more than many budget brands offer.
The caution is that published terms vary between models and listings — some rack-equipped models are listed with a lifetime warranty while MB models carry three years — and the dealer network behind it is smaller than RETRAX's when something needs a part. On a powered product with a motor and a controller, parts availability is not a trivial consideration.
The picks in detail
#1 · Opening the bed without touching it
RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR
RETRAX · Retractable (electric)
The electric retractable to beat: 500 lb rating, remote operation with an electromagnetic brake so it stops anywhere, and T-slot rails that take most third-party rack accessories.
What it does well
- 500 lb published rating, the highest of any retractable here
- The electromagnetic brake means it holds at any opening, not just fully open or closed
- T-slot rails are a genuine ecosystem rather than a proprietary dead end
Where it gives way
- The canister permanently occupies bed length at the bulkhead and cannot be removed for a tall load
- RETRAX does not publish canister dimensions, so you cannot plan around the loss before buying
- Powered operation adds a wiring step and a failure mode a manual cover does not have
Skip it if: Anyone who wants the bed length back. A retractable's canister lives at the bulkhead permanently, and it is not removable like a folding cover.
| Construction | Aluminum |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Operation | Remote activation with electromagnetic brake — stops at any point |
| Rails | Trax Rail System accepts most T-slot accessories |
| Warranty | 3 years, limited lifetime prorated thereafter |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Canister | Low-profile canister sits flush with the bed rails; exact dimensions not published |

#2 · Powered retracting for less
Syneticusa MB Electric Retractable
Syneticusa · Retractable (electric)
The cheapest route into a powered retractable: 6063-T5 aluminum, a published 600 lb capacity and a dual-lock system, for a 3-year warranty rather than RETRAX's lifetime.
What it does well
- Powered retraction at a fraction of the RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR's price
- 600 lb published capacity and a named alloy rather than 'aerospace aluminum'
- EPDM seals and no-drill bolt-on fitting, same approach as the premium covers
Where it gives way
- 3-year warranty where RETRAX publishes limited lifetime on the manual PRO
- Published terms vary by model and listing, which makes the stated capacity harder to rely on
- Smaller dealer network than the established brands when something needs a part
Skip it if: Anyone who wants the warranty to match the claim — 600 lb is a bigger number than RETRAX publishes, behind a much shorter term.
| Construction | 6063-T5 aluminum |
|---|---|
| Load capacity | 600 lb |
| Sealing | EPDM rubber seals |
| Locking | Dual-lock system |
| Warranty | 3 years on MB models; some rack-equipped models listed as lifetime |
| Drilling | No-drill bolt-on installation |

#3 · A retractable that will outlast the truck
RetraxPRO MX
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
- Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
- Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story
Where it gives way
- The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
- Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
- Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating
Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.
| Construction | Double-wall aluminum slats |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime, non-transferable |
| Locking | Key-lockable TraxLatch handle, infinite locking positions |
| Stated install time | Less than 60 minutes |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on rails, four quick-attach clamps |
| Temperature tested | -40°F to 180°F |
| Sealing | Integrated water management with drain tubes |
| Origin | Assembled in Grand Forks, North Dakota |

Common questions
What is the best electric tonneau cover?
The RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR. It publishes a 500 lb evenly distributed rating, remote activation with an electromagnetic brake that holds the cover at any point in its travel, Trax Rail T-slot compatibility, and a no-drill install. The Syneticusa MB is the cheaper powered option, with a published 600 lb capacity and a 3-year warranty.
Is an electric tonneau cover worth it?
Only if you open the bed with full hands regularly. The manual RetraxPRO MX carries the same 500 lb rating as RETRAX's powered model with a longer published warranty and no motor, controller, wiring or remote battery to fail. The motor buys convenience, not capability.
What happens if an electric tonneau cover's motor fails?
You are relying on the manufacturer's manual override and on warranty coverage, which is why the warranty term matters more on a powered cover than a manual one. RETRAX publishes three years then prorated lifetime on the PowertraxPRO XR; Syneticusa publishes three years on MB models.
Do electric tonneau covers need professional installation?
The cover itself is a no-drill clamp-on fit like any other. The power feed to the bed is the part worth paying for if you are not comfortable running a circuit properly — it is the one install step in this whole category that is not a straightforward DIY job.
