The Best Tri-Fold Tonneau Covers for the Ford F-150
Three panels, sixty seconds, and a stack at the cab you cannot get rid of. Here is what each tri-fold gives an F-150, and what the folded stack takes.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

| 3 | ![]() Extang Trifecta 2.0The soft tri-fold with the longest warranty: limited lifetime on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware and the vinyl itself, with adhesive-free snap-on seals instead of the stick-on strips cheap covers use. | Best soft tri-fold | 7.4out of 10 | |
| 4 | ![]() Tyger Auto T3 Soft Tri-FoldThe cheapest cover in this registry that still names its materials. Pre-assembled crossbars fold with the cover, which is the one design detail that separates a good budget tri-fold from a bad one. | Best budget | 7.0out of 10 | |
| 5 | ![]() Rough Country Hard Low Profile Bed CoverThe cheapest aluminum-panel tri-fold worth listing: powder-coated aluminum frame, aluminum panels, drain tubes, 5-year warranty. Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Buy the LOMAX Stance for most F-150s. Extruded aluminum panels, 400 lb evenly distributed, a textured urethane finish, and a profile that sits half an inch above the bed rails — the flushest hard tri-fold here.
Buy the Extang Solid Fold ALX if anything heavy goes on top. Its 1-inch TPO panels are published at 600 lb, the highest rating in our whole registry, and the Jaw-Grip clamps need no tools.
A tri-fold always spends the front third of the bed when it is open. If that is unacceptable, you want a roll-up instead.
What counts as a tri-fold, and what we put elsewhere
Three panels hinged together that fold forward into a stack at the cab. That is the whole definition, and it spans both hard and soft construction — which is why this page carries extruded aluminum next to marine-grade vinyl. Several covers marketed as “hard folding” are tri-folds by this definition, including the BAKFlip MX4; we keep those on the hard folding page because that is where people look for them, and the two pages are meant to be read together.
For an F-150 the tri-fold is the mainstream choice, and it earns that. It opens in under a minute with one hand, most of these come off the truck entirely without tools, and the hard versions are the cheapest way to get a rigid panel and a published load rating onto the bed.
The five, side by side
| Cover | Panels | Load rating | Warranty | Bed access folded |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LOMAX Stance | Extruded aluminum, textured urethane | 400 lb | Limited 3-year | Two-thirds |
| Extang Solid Fold ALX | 1-inch EnduraShield TPO, aluminum frame | 600 lb | 5-year limited on rails and hardware | Two-thirds, or full if removed |
| Extang Trifecta 2.0 | Marine-grade tarp on aluminum frame | None — soft | Limited lifetime including the vinyl | Two-thirds |
| Tyger Auto T3 | 24 oz vinyl, aluminum frame, folding crossbars | None — soft | 5 years, US customers | Two-thirds |
| Rough Country Hard Low Profile | Aluminum panels, powder-coated frame | Not published | 5-year; some models listed limited lifetime | Two-thirds |
Figures are the manufacturer's or specialist retailer's published specifications, cited at the foot of this page. Where a maker publishes no figure the cell says so rather than carrying an estimate. Rough Country's published cover weights are quoted for 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 7 in beds, which are Ram sizes - treat them as the shape of the weight, not the F-150 figure.
The folded stack, measured honestly
Every tri-fold here publishes bed access as two-thirds when folded, and that number is the real cost of the type. On an 8 ft F-150 bed, giving up the front third still leaves you more usable length than a 5.5 ft bed has in total. On a 5.5 ft SuperCrew, the same proportion is a genuine constraint — you are loading into roughly 44 inches with the cover open.
Two of these have an answer to it. Extang publishes the Solid Fold ALX as removable without tools for full bed access, and the Trifecta 2.0 as a Level 1 tool-free install that comes off the same way. If your F-150 spends most of its life covered and occasionally needs the whole bed, that is the behaviour you want — not a bigger load rating.
Which one, for which F-150 owner
The default: LOMAX Stance
Extruded aluminum panels, 400 lb evenly distributed, and a published profile half an inch above the bed rails, which is as close to flush as a folding cover gets. The 3-year warranty is shorter than Extang's or BAK's, and LOMAX publishes no install time at all — both are worth knowing before you commit. The LOMAX against the BAKFlip MX4 is the comparison most buyers at this price actually need.
If weight goes on top: Extang Solid Fold ALX
600 lb evenly distributed is the highest published figure in our registry, and the triple-fin perimeter seals are a genuinely better sealing approach than a single bulb. Extang publishes the warranty as 5-year limited on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware — read that list, because it is a parts list rather than a blanket term.
If price leads: Extang Trifecta 2.0 or Tyger T3
The Trifecta 2.0 is the one soft cover in this whole registry whose published limited lifetime warranty explicitly includes the vinyl covering, which is unusual and worth real money on the part that actually wears out. The Tyger T3 undercuts it with 24 oz marine-grade vinyl, pre-assembled folding crossbars and a 5-year US warranty. The T1 against the T3 if you are choosing inside that brand.
Soft tri-folds lock to the tailgate
The Trifecta 2.0 and the Tyger T3 both secure with the tailgate lock. That is adequate privacy and weather cover, and it is not security — an unlocked tailgate is an unlocked bed regardless of what is over it. The covers that genuinely lock.
Bed length, as always
The F-150 is sold with roughly 5.5, 6.5 and 8 foot beds, and the tri-fold part number changes with all three. There is no adjustment range and no universal fit. Measure the bed and order to that number; if you want the per-bed shortlists they are on the 5.5 ft page, the 6.5 ft page and the 8 ft page. An F-150 Lightning is treated as a separate fitment by the aftermarket and has its own page.
The picks in detail
#1 · The lowest profile
LOMAX Stance Hard Tri-Fold
LOMAX · Tri-fold (hard)
The flattest cover here: extruded aluminum panels sitting a published half-inch above the bed rails, carrying 400 lb. If the silhouette matters to you, this is the one.
What it does well
- Half an inch above the rails is a published figure, and it is the flattest in this registry
- Extruded aluminum panels rather than a folded skin — stiffer per millimeter of thickness
- Textured urethane finish wears better than paint on a surface people lean on
Where it gives way
- 3-year warranty where the class leaders publish 5
- LOMAX does not publish an install time or a drilling answer, so you are relying on the retailer listing
- The low profile leaves very little room for anything proud of the bed rails underneath
Skip it if: Buyers comparing warranties — three years, against five from BAK, Extang and UnderCover.
| Construction | Extruded aluminum panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Heavy-duty textured urethane |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited 3-year |
| Profile height | Sits ½ inch above the bed rails |
| Stated install time | Not published |

#2 · Carrying load on top of the cover
Extang Solid Fold ALX
Extang · Hard folding
The highest published load rating in this roundup at 600 lb, on inch-thick TPO panels in an aluminum frame, with tool-free clamps and a five-year warranty.
What it does well
- 600 lb published rating is the highest here by 200 lb — the one cover in the group you can actually plan to load
- Inch-thick TPO panels are substantially more rigid than a thin aluminum skin
- Tool-free clamps, and removable without tools when you need the whole bed
Where it gives way
- Folded, access is two-thirds — the full-bed answer is taking the cover off, not folding it further
- Panel thickness means more weight to lift off than a thin folding cover
- Warranty text covers rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware; the panel itself is described separately
Skip it if: Anyone who needs more than two-thirds of the bed open at once without pulling the cover off the truck.
| Construction | 1-inch EnduraShield TPO panels, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 600 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows and hardware |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Drilling | None — tool-free Jaw-Grip clamps |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when folded; removable without tools for full access |
| Sealing | Triple-fin perimeter seals |

#3 · A soft cover you keep
Extang Trifecta 2.0
Extang · Tri-fold (soft)
The soft tri-fold with the longest warranty: limited lifetime on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware and the vinyl itself, with adhesive-free snap-on seals instead of the stick-on strips cheap covers use.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime covering the vinyl as well as the frame — soft covers usually exclude the fabric
- Adhesive-free snap-on seals do not peel off in the sun the way stick-on strips do
- Tool-free install at Level 1 difficulty
Where it gives way
- Two-thirds bed access, where a roll-up gives you the whole bed
- Tri-fold geometry means the folded stack sits at the bulkhead taking height
- Still a soft cover — no load rating and no real security
Skip it if: Full bed access. Folded forward it gives two-thirds, and that is the published figure.
| Construction | Marine-grade tarp on an aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware and vinyl covering |
| Install difficulty | Level 1 — tool-free, no drilling |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when open |
| Sealing | Adhesive-free triple-fin snap-on seals |

#4 · The lowest cost per year of use
Tyger Auto T3 Soft Tri-Fold
Tyger Auto · Tri-fold (soft)
The cheapest cover in this registry that still names its materials. Pre-assembled crossbars fold with the cover, which is the one design detail that separates a good budget tri-fold from a bad one.
What it does well
- Crossbars fold with the cover rather than needing to be lifted out — the detail that makes a budget tri-fold usable daily
- 24 oz dual-coated marine-grade vinyl is published, not vague
- Clamp-and-latch fit, no drilling, on a cover at the bottom of the market
Where it gives way
- Soft tri-fold access only — the folded stack lives at the bulkhead
- Vinyl at this price is the first thing to go; plan on a protectant routine
- Tailgate-dependent locking means an unlocked tailgate is an unlocked bed
Skip it if: A truck that lives outside in hard sun. Budget vinyl is the part that ages, and it ages fastest in UV.
| Construction | Dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl, aircraft-grade aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Crossbars | Pre-assembled horizontal crossbars that fold with the cover |
| Install | Clamp-and-latch, no drilling |
| Locking | Lockable with the tailgate |
| Warranty | 5 years for US customers |

#5 · The lowest price in hard panels
Rough Country Hard Low Profile Bed Cover
Rough Country · Tri-fold (hard)
The cheapest aluminum-panel tri-fold worth listing: powder-coated aluminum frame, aluminum panels, drain tubes, 5-year warranty. Rough Country does not publish a load rating, and that absence is the honest headline.
What it does well
- Published per-bed cover weights, which most makers omit — 51.65 lb at 5'7" tells you it is a one-person lift
- 5-year warranty at a price where 1-2 years is normal
- Drain tubes included rather than sold as an upgrade
Where it gives way
- No published load rating at all — if you intend to put weight on the cover, buy something that states a number
- Published install and drilling details are thin
- Finish and hardware are built to the price; clamps need re-checking more often than premium covers
Skip it if: Anyone who needs to know what the cover will carry — there is no published load rating to go on.
| Construction | Aluminum panels, corrosion-resistant black powder-coated aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | Not published |
| Warranty | 5-year (certain models listed as limited lifetime) |
| Cover weight | 51.65 lb for the 5'7" bed; 59.50 lb for the 6'7" |
| Sealing | Track and rail mounting system with drain tubes |

Common questions
What is the best tri-fold tonneau cover for an F-150?
The LOMAX Stance for most owners - extruded aluminum panels, 400 lb evenly distributed and a profile published at half an inch above the bed rails. If weight goes on top, the Extang Solid Fold ALX is published at 600 lb, the highest figure in our registry.
How much bed do you lose with a tri-fold cover on an F-150?
Roughly the front third. Every tri-fold here publishes bed access as two-thirds when folded open. On an 8 ft bed that is liveable; on a 5.5 ft SuperCrew you are loading into about 44 inches. The Extang Solid Fold ALX and Trifecta 2.0 both come off without tools when you need the whole bed.
Is a hard tri-fold worth the extra over a soft one?
If anything in the bed is worth stealing or you want to put weight on the cover, yes - a rigid aluminum or TPO panel with a published load rating is a different product from vinyl on bows. If the cover's job is keeping rain and eyes off a bed of garden waste, the Extang Trifecta 2.0's lifetime vinyl coverage is better value.
Does a tri-fold tonneau cover need drilling on an F-150?
No. Every cover on this page is published as a no-drill clamp-on fit, and Extang publishes both of its covers here as Level 1 tool-free installs. The step that goes wrong is squaring the rails, not drilling.
