LOMAX Stance vs BAKFlip MX4

One is the flattest cover we have found. The other has the longer warranty and publishes everything LOMAX leaves out.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.

What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.

The short answer

LOMAX Stance: extruded aluminum panels at a published ½ inch above the bed rails — the flattest figure in our registry — 400 lb, limited 3-year warranty.

BAKFlip MX4: 400 lb, 5-year warranty, a published 30-minute install, and EPDM seals revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.

Same rating. The MX4 publishes more.

SealingNot detailed in published documentationRevised EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage

LOMAX does not publish an install time or a drilling answer in its documentation, which is why those cells read 'not published'. That absence is itself part of the comparison.

The half-inch, which is the LOMAX's whole case

Half an inch above the bed rails is a published figure and it is the flattest in our registry — flatter than the TruXedo Lo Pro's three-quarters of an inch, flatter than anything else we have found a number for.

Extruded aluminum is how LOMAX gets there. An extruded panel is stiffer per millimeter of thickness than a folded skin over a frame, so the cover can be thinner without losing the 400 lb rating. That is a real engineering argument, not a styling claim.

If a flush silhouette is a significant part of why you want a cover, this is the one.

The documentation gap

LOMAX does not publish an install time. It does not publish a drilling answer. Its documentation does not detail the sealing design. Those are three things every other hard folding cover in our registry states plainly.

That is not evidence the cover is bad. It is evidence you will be relying on the retailer listing rather than the manufacturer for answers to basic questions, and on a fitment-critical product that is a real friction point.

Three years against five

BAK publishes five years on the MX4; LOMAX publishes a limited three on the Stance. Both are at 400 lb. Two years of difference at the same rating, from brands in the same price neighborhood.

The verdict

Buy the MX4 unless the profile is specifically what you are buying. It matches the LOMAX on rating, beats it by two years on warranty, publishes a 30-minute no-drill install, and documents its sealing design.

Buy the LOMAX Stance if a half-inch silhouette is worth two years of warranty and a thinner spec sheet to you. That is a legitimate trade and the engineering behind the flat profile is real — just go in knowing which column you are paying in.

Weather sealing8.5
Bed access8.0
Install effort9.0
Durability8.5
Value8.0

What it does well

  • 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
  • The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
  • Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
  • 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket

Where it gives way

  • Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
  • Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
  • No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker

Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.

Bed access7.5
Durability8.0
Value7.5

7.8overall, out of 10

What it does well

  • Half an inch above the rails is a published figure, and it is the flattest in this registry
  • Extruded aluminum panels rather than a folded skin — stiffer per millimeter of thickness
  • Textured urethane finish wears better than paint on a surface people lean on

Where it gives way

  • 3-year warranty where the class leaders publish 5
  • LOMAX does not publish an install time or a drilling answer, so you are relying on the retailer listing
  • The low profile leaves very little room for anything proud of the bed rails underneath

Skip it if: Buyers comparing warranties — three years, against five from BAK, Extang and UnderCover.

Common questions

Is the LOMAX Stance better than the BAKFlip MX4?

Not on paper, except on profile. Both publish 400 lb evenly distributed, but the MX4 publishes a 5-year warranty against LOMAX's limited 3-year, plus a 30-minute no-drill install and a documented EPDM seal design. The LOMAX wins decisively on one thing: a published half-inch above the bed rails.

How low does the LOMAX Stance sit?

A published half-inch above the bed rails, which is the flattest figure in our registry. LOMAX achieves it with extruded aluminum panels, which are stiffer per millimeter of thickness than a folded skin over a frame — so the cover can be thinner without losing the 400 lb rating.

Does LOMAX publish an install time for the Stance?

No. LOMAX does not publish an install time, a drilling answer, or a detailed sealing design in its documentation, which means you are relying on the retailer listing for those. Every other hard folding cover we compare publishes all three.

Which has the better warranty, LOMAX or BAKFlip?

BAKFlip, by two years — five against LOMAX's limited three, at the same 400 lb rating. BAK publishes its coverage as not transferable, so it does not follow the truck to a new owner.
