What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Buy the RetraxPRO MX. Double-wall aluminum slats, 500 lb evenly distributed, a key-lockable TraxLatch handle with infinite locking positions, and a limited lifetime warranty. RETRAX publishes it as operating independently of the tailgate, which is the spec that actually predicts security.
Buy the PowertraxPRO XR if you want it powered — remote activation with an electromagnetic brake that stops the cover at any point, 500 lb, and Trax rails that accept most T-slot accessories.
The canister is permanent. On a 5.5 ft F-150 bed that is the single biggest argument against this whole type.
The canister tax, bed by bed
Every retractable stores its slats in a sealed canister bolted at the bulkhead. Unlike a folded stack or a rolled bundle, the canister does not move when you need the bed — it is gone for as long as the cover is on the truck. RETRAX publishes the PowertraxPRO XR canister as low-profile and sitting flush with the bed rails, but does not publish an exact depth figure, and we are not going to invent one.
What we can say plainly is how the cost scales. On an 8 ft F-150 bed, a canister at the bulkhead is a rounding error against 96 inches. On a 6.5 ft bed it is noticeable when you load long goods. On a 5.5 ft SuperCrew — again, the most common F-150 on the road — it is the difference between a sheet of plywood sitting flat against the bulkhead and not. If your F-150 is a 5.5 ft bed and you load long things, read the roll-up page before you commit here.
The five, side by side
| Cover | Operation | Load rating | Locking | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RetraxPRO MX | Manual, double-wall aluminum slats | 500 lb | Key-lockable TraxLatch, infinite positions | Limited lifetime, non-transferable |
| RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR | Remote, electromagnetic brake, stops anywhere | 500 lb | Powered, Trax rails for T-slot accessories | 3 years, then prorated lifetime |
| RetraxONE XR | Manual, aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate | 200 lb | Key-lockable in any position, 2x security | Limited hassle-free, 1 year |
| Peragon Landmark | Manual, below-the-bed aluminum | Not published | Not published | 5 / 3 / 1 year by trim |
| Syneticusa MB Electric | Powered, 6063-T5 aluminum | 600 lb | Dual-lock system | 3 years on MB models |
Published manufacturer and specialist-retailer specifications, cited at the foot of this page. Peragon's figures are its warranty tiers rather than a load rating, because Peragon publishes no load rating for the Landmark. Canister depth is not published by any maker here, so no figure appears.
Why these are the most secure covers you can buy
Most hard covers lock by closing against a locked tailgate. The implication is uncomfortable: an unlocked or damaged tailgate lock means the bed is open, and the cover's rigidity is irrelevant. Retractables are the family that mostly avoids this. RETRAX publishes the RetraxPRO MX as operating independently of the tailgate, with a key-lockable handle and infinite locking positions along the bed, and the RetraxONE XR as key-lockable in any position with what it calls 2x key-lockable security. Syneticusa publishes a dual-lock system on the MB.
That is the real reason to put one on an F-150 that carries tools. The 500 lb rating and the one-handed operation are nice; the lock is the product. What these locks do and do not stop.
Manual or electric
The PowertraxPRO XR is the one we would spend the money on if powered is the goal: remote activation, an electromagnetic brake that holds the cover at any point rather than only open or closed, and the same 500 lb rating as the manual PRO MX. The Syneticusa MB is the cheapest route to powered and publishes the highest load capacity here at 600 lb, on a 3-year warranty.
The honest counter-argument is that a manual retractable already opens one-handed in a couple of seconds, and every motor, switch and loom is a part that can fail outside a 3-year term. Electric against manual, in full, and the PowertraxPRO XR against the RetraxONE XR if you are choosing inside the RETRAX line.
Two warranty traps worth knowing
RETRAX publishes the RetraxPRO MX's limited lifetime coverage as non-transferable, so a cover fitted to a used F-150 you buy is almost certainly outside it. And the RetraxONE XR's published term is one year — the shortest in this registry — which is a surprising figure on a premium retractable and should factor into the price you are willing to pay.
If you want a rack as well
Two of these publish rail systems designed for it. RETRAX publishes the PowertraxPRO XR's Trax Rail System as accepting most T-slot accessories, and the RetraxONE XR with integrated T-slot rails for racks, cargo holders, tents and crossbars. That is a genuine F-150 use case — bikes or a rooftop tent over a sealed, locked bed — and it is covered properly on the covers-with-a-rack page and in the rack compatibility guide.
One caution specific to the F-150: check for the factory in-bed cargo management rails before ordering any retractable. RealTruck publishes that the system fitted to 2008-2014 F-150s blocks several cover families outright because of its size, and a canister that needs the bulkhead is exactly the geometry most likely to conflict.
The picks in detail
#1 · A retractable that will outlast the truck
RetraxPRO MX
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The manual version of the same idea and, for most people, the better buy: 500 lb rating, a limited lifetime warranty, double-wall aluminum slats, and no motor to fail.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime warranty on a 500 lb retractable is the strongest published pairing in this registry
- Locks at any point along the bed, not just closed — genuinely useful with long cargo
- Operates independently of the tailgate, so the tailgate is not part of the security story
Where it gives way
- The canister still costs you bed length at the bulkhead, same as any retractable
- Warranty does not transfer to the next owner
- Costs more than most folding covers that carry a lower, but adequate, rating
Skip it if: A second owner — RETRAX publishes the lifetime coverage as non-transferable.
| Construction | Double-wall aluminum slats |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black powder coat |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |

| Stated install time | Less than 60 minutes |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on rails, four quick-attach clamps |
| Temperature tested | -40°F to 180°F |
| Sealing | Integrated water management with drain tubes |
| Origin | Assembled in Grand Forks, North Dakota |

#2 · Opening the bed without touching it
RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR
RETRAX · Retractable (electric)
The electric retractable to beat: 500 lb rating, remote operation with an electromagnetic brake so it stops anywhere, and T-slot rails that take most third-party rack accessories.
What it does well
- 500 lb published rating, the highest of any retractable here
- The electromagnetic brake means it holds at any opening, not just fully open or closed
- T-slot rails are a genuine ecosystem rather than a proprietary dead end
Where it gives way
- The canister permanently occupies bed length at the bulkhead and cannot be removed for a tall load
- RETRAX does not publish canister dimensions, so you cannot plan around the loss before buying
- Powered operation adds a wiring step and a failure mode a manual cover does not have
Skip it if: Anyone who wants the bed length back. A retractable's canister lives at the bulkhead permanently, and it is not removable like a folding cover.
| Construction | Aluminum |

| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 500 lb, evenly distributed |
| Operation | Remote activation with electromagnetic brake — stops at any point |
| Rails | Trax Rail System accepts most T-slot accessories |
| Warranty | 3 years, limited lifetime prorated thereafter |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Canister | Low-profile canister sits flush with the bed rails; exact dimensions not published |

#3 · T-slot rack compatibility
RetraxONE XR
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The T-slot retractable at the accessible end of the RETRAX range. Read the two published numbers before you buy: 200 lb, and one year.
What it does well
- Integrated T-slot rails at the lowest price in the RETRAX retractable line
- Key-lockable in any position, the same as the more expensive models
- Polycarbonate deck is lighter than the PRO's double-wall aluminum
Where it gives way
- 200 lb rating — a quarter of what the Extang folding covers publish and under half the RetraxPRO MX
- One-year warranty, against limited lifetime on the RetraxPRO MX
- Canister cost in bed length is the same as the expensive models without the matching durability numbers
Skip it if: Carrying anything meaningful on top — 200 lb is less than half what the PRO models publish.
| Construction | Aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate, aluminum side rails and tracks |
|---|---|
| Finish | Premium textured matte black |
| Load rating | 200 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited hassle-free, 1 year from purchase |
| Locking | Key-lockable in any position, 2x key-lockable security |
| Rails | Integrated T-slot rails for racks, cargo holders, tents, crossbars |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on, no cutting or drilling |

#4 · Buying with a return window
Peragon Landmark Retractable
Peragon · Retractable (manual)
A below-the-bed aluminum retractable built in Shell Lake, Wisconsin, sold direct with a 60-day money-back return. Warranty depends entirely on which trim you pick: 1, 3 or 5 years.
What it does well
- A 60-day return window on a cover you cannot see in a store is worth real money
- Below-the-bed mounting keeps the bed rails clear
- Built and sold direct from Wisconsin, so warranty claims go to the maker rather than a reseller
Where it gives way
- Three different warranty terms across one product name — check which trim you are actually buying
- Return shipping on a rejected cover runs $59 to $700 depending on model and location
- Peragon does not publish a load rating, an install time or a cover weight for the Landmark
Skip it if: Buyers who want one warranty answer — Peragon publishes three different terms across the Landmark range.
| Construction | Below-the-bed aluminum retractable |
|---|---|
| Warranty — Landmark Limited HD | 5 years |
| Warranty — Landmark Platinum | 3 years |
| Warranty — Landmark Classic | 1 year |
| Returns | 60-day money-back, new or gently used, minus return shipping ($59-$700) |
| Origin | Made in America — Shell Lake, Wisconsin |
| Removability | Peragon describes the Landmark as built for removability |

#5 · Powered retracting for less
Syneticusa MB Electric Retractable
Syneticusa · Retractable (electric)
The cheapest route into a powered retractable: 6063-T5 aluminum, a published 600 lb capacity and a dual-lock system, for a 3-year warranty rather than RETRAX's lifetime.
What it does well
- Powered retraction at a fraction of the RETRAX PowertraxPRO XR's price
- 600 lb published capacity and a named alloy rather than 'aerospace aluminum'
- EPDM seals and no-drill bolt-on fitting, same approach as the premium covers
Where it gives way
- 3-year warranty where RETRAX publishes limited lifetime on the manual PRO
- Published terms vary by model and listing, which makes the stated capacity harder to rely on
- Smaller dealer network than the established brands when something needs a part
Skip it if: Anyone who wants the warranty to match the claim — 600 lb is a bigger number than RETRAX publishes, behind a much shorter term.
| Construction | 6063-T5 aluminum |
|---|---|
| Load capacity | 600 lb |
| Sealing | EPDM rubber seals |
| Locking | Dual-lock system |
| Warranty | 3 years on MB models; some rack-equipped models listed as lifetime |
| Drilling | No-drill bolt-on installation |

Common questions
What is the best retractable tonneau cover for an F-150?
The RetraxPRO MX. RETRAX publishes it at 500 lb evenly distributed on double-wall aluminum slats, with a key-lockable TraxLatch handle, infinite locking positions and operation independent of the tailgate, on a limited lifetime warranty. The PowertraxPRO XR is the version to buy if you want it powered.
How much bed space does a retractable cover take on an F-150?
A canister's worth at the bulkhead, permanently. No manufacturer here publishes an exact depth, so we quote none. What matters is the proportion: negligible on an 8 ft bed, noticeable on a 6.5 ft, and a real constraint on a 5.5 ft SuperCrew bed.
Are retractable tonneau covers more secure than hard folding ones?
Generally yes, because of lock independence. RETRAX publishes the RetraxPRO MX as locking independently of the tailgate at any position along the bed, where most folding covers secure by closing against a locked tailgate - which makes the tailgate lock the weak link.
Can you put a rack on a retractable cover on an F-150?
On some. RETRAX publishes the PowertraxPRO XR's Trax Rail System as accepting most T-slot accessories, and the RetraxONE XR with integrated T-slot rails for racks, crossbars and tents. Never treat the cover's load rating as a rack rating - the two are different claims.
