Tonneau Covers for the Silverado Short Bed
The crew-cab default at 5'8", and the Silverado bed where what an open cover takes decides more than any published rating.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Around 70 inches inside, bulkhead to closed tailgate. The 6'6" bed is around 79.
Check for factory bed rails before shortlisting — on a Silverado that is the fitment question that rules covers in or out.
On a short bed, the footprint of the open cover matters more than the load rating for most owners.
Confirming the short bed
Measure along the bed floor from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate. The current Silverado 1500 short bed is nominally 5'8" and measures around 70 inches inside; the 6'6" standard bed is around 79.
Note that the Silverado HD trucks use different bed lengths again — 6'9" and 8' on the current generation — so a 2500HD is not a 1500 with a different badge for fitment purposes. The HD page covers that.
Factory bed rails
Silverados ordered with factory bed rail protection or a utility rail system have hardware along the top of the bed wall where a clamp-on cover wants to clamp. Some covers clamp over it, some require the caps removed, a few are not compatible.
Every manufacturer publishes a fitment note covering this. On a Silverado it is the note to read in full before anything else.
The short-bed footprint argument
| Cover type when open | On a 5.5 ft bed | On a 6.5 ft bed | On an 8 ft bed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft roll-up, rolled forward | Smallest loss | Smallest loss | Smallest loss |
| Hard folding, stacked at the cab | Roughly a third of the bed | Roughly a quarter | Roughly a fifth |
| Retractable, canister at the bulkhead | Permanent, and proportionally largest | Permanent | Permanent, and easiest to absorb |
Figures are the proportion of bed length a folded or rolled cover typically occupies, not a manufacturer specification. They are here to make the trade-off visible, and no manufacturer in this registry publishes the dimension - including RETRAX, which does not publish canister dimensions for any retractable.
A 5'8" bed on a crew cab is already a compromise — you traded bed for back seat. A hard folding cover takes roughly a third of what is left when it is open. For a lot of Silverado crew-cab owners, that single fact outweighs the difference between a 400 lb rating and a 300 lb one.
If the bed mostly carries things rather than storing them, look hard at the TruXedo TruXport. If it mostly stores things you would miss, the hard covers earn their keep.
Which cover
BAKFlip MX4
400 lb, 5-year warranty, published 30-minute no-drill clamp-on install, revised EPDM seals with integrated drainage.
TruXedo TruXport
Published 100 percent bed access when rolled fully forward, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, clamp-on with vehicle-specific hardware included.
UnderCover UltraFlex
400 lb, 5-year limited warranty, published 30-minute install, and rated to be driven with the cover folded open — the single most useful thing a folding cover can offer on a short bed.
TruXedo Sentry CT
400 lb, interlocking aluminum slats under five-layer canvas, up to six auto-engaging latches, 5-year warranty covering the fabric, made in America. Hard-cover security without a folded stack.
Rough Country Low Profile
Aluminum panels, powder-coated aluminum frame, drain tubes, 5-year warranty, and a published 51.65 lb cover weight at 5'7". No published load rating, which means treat it as rated for nothing.
The picks in detail
#1 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#2 · Full bed access on a budget
TruXedo TruXport
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.
What it does well
- Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
- 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
- Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box
Where it gives way
- Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
- Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
- Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks
Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.
| Construction | Vinyl over a clamp-on aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Bed access | 100 percent — rolls forward to the cab |
| Mounting | Clamp-on, vehicle-specific hardware included |

#3 · Carrying tall loads often
UnderCover UltraFlex
UnderCover · Hard folding
The folding cover built to be driven open: it folds to the cab and the maker states you can drive that way, which is the single most useful thing a folding cover can offer a person hauling tall loads.
What it does well
- Rated to be driven with the cover folded open — most folding covers simply do not say this
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating with a 5-year warranty behind it
- Polymer core gives the panel more dent resistance than a hollow aluminum skin
Where it gives way
- Folded to the cab it still consumes bed length, driving or parked
- UnderCover's warranty specifically rules out rear-towing the vehicle with the cover on — read it before you flat-tow
- Matte finish needs a dedicated protectant rather than wax
Skip it if: Towing from the rear with the cover fitted — UnderCover's own warranty says not to.
| Construction | Aluminum with a high-density polymer core |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None on most applications |
| Bed access | 100 percent, all the time — rated to drive folded open |
Specifications read from RealTruck — UnderCover UltraFlex (Gen 3) published specifications.

#4 · Security without losing the roll
TruXedo Sentry CT
TruXedo · Roll-up (hard)
Interlocking aluminum slats under a five-layer canvas skin: a 400 lb rating and up to six auto-engaging latches in a cover that still rolls up instead of folding.
What it does well
- 400 lb rating on a roll-up, which usually means a folding cover or nothing
- Up to six latches that engage automatically — no walking the bed to lock each one
- Warranty explicitly covers the fabric as well as the hard parts, which soft covers rarely do
Where it gives way
- The rolled slat bundle permanently occupies the front of the bed
- An hour to fit, where a soft roll-up is thirty minutes
- Canvas over slats is more surface to keep clean than a plain aluminum panel
Skip it if: Anyone who assumes a hard roll-up gives a clear bed. Rolled up, the slat bundle sits at the bulkhead and stays there.
| Construction | Interlocking aluminum slats with RTxTechWeave 5-layer, 120-grade canvas |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited, covering hard parts and fabric |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour, Level 1 difficulty |
| Locking | Level-2 locks, tension cable, up to 6 auto-engaging latches |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on with no-drill self-leveling rails |
| Origin | Made in America |

#5 · The lowest price in hard panels
Rough Country Hard Low Profile Bed Cover
Rough Country · Tri-fold (hard)
The cheapest aluminum-panel tri-fold worth listing: powder-coated aluminum frame, aluminum panels, drain tubes, 5-year warranty. Rough Country does not publish a load rating, and that absence is the honest headline.
What it does well
- Published per-bed cover weights, which most makers omit — 51.65 lb at 5'7" tells you it is a one-person lift
- 5-year warranty at a price where 1-2 years is normal
- Drain tubes included rather than sold as an upgrade
Where it gives way
- No published load rating at all — if you intend to put weight on the cover, buy something that states a number
- Published install and drilling details are thin
- Finish and hardware are built to the price; clamps need re-checking more often than premium covers
Skip it if: Anyone who needs to know what the cover will carry — there is no published load rating to go on.
| Construction | Aluminum panels, corrosion-resistant black powder-coated aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | Not published |
| Warranty | 5-year (certain models listed as limited lifetime) |
| Cover weight | 51.65 lb for the 5'7" bed; 59.50 lb for the 6'7" |
| Sealing | Track and rail mounting system with drain tubes |

Common questions
How long is the Silverado 1500 short bed inside?
Around 70 inches from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate along the floor, for the nominal 5'8" bed. The 6'6" standard bed measures around 79.
What is the best tonneau cover for a Silverado short bed?
The BAKFlip MX4 for most owners — 400 lb, a 5-year warranty and a 30-minute no-drill install. If the bed carries loads rather than storing valuables, the TruXedo TruXport is the stronger buy, because on a 5'8" bed a folded cover takes roughly a third of what you have.
Will a tonneau cover fit a Silverado with factory bed rails?
Usually, but read the manufacturer's fitment note. Some covers clamp over the factory rail hardware, some require the caps removed first, and a few are not compatible. On a Silverado this is the fitment question that rules covers in or out.
Does a Silverado 1500 short bed cover fit a 2500HD?
No. The HD trucks use different bed lengths — 6'9" and 8' on the current generation — and a different bed structure. A 2500HD is not a 1500 with a different badge for cover fitment.
