Tonneau Covers for the Tacoma 6 ft Bed
The less common Tacoma bed, and the one where a hard folding cover stops costing you most of your cargo space.

Cover & Cargo earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in — here is how we choose and here is the full disclosure.
What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
Measure, do not assume. The Tacoma 6 ft bed is around 73 inches inside; the 5 ft is around 60. That is a wide gap and one measurement settles it.
Check the deck rail system before you look at covers. Most Tacomas have it, and it decides which covers are candidates.
Confirming the 6 ft bed
Tape along the bed floor from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate. Around 73 inches is the 6 ft bed; around 60 is the 5 ft. The 5 ft bed is the double-cab default and far more common, so if you are not certain, you probably have the 5 ft — but measure rather than assuming.
Deck rails, first
Toyota fits a utility rail system with sliding cleats to most Tacoma beds, running along the top of each bed wall. That is exactly where a clamp-on cover attaches. Manufacturers either clamp over it, require it removed, or do not offer the cover for rail-equipped trucks, and they all publish which.
On a Tacoma this check comes before cover type and before brand. The main Tacoma page covers it in full.
What the extra foot changes
| Cover type when open | On a 5.5 ft bed | On a 6.5 ft bed | On an 8 ft bed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft roll-up, rolled forward | Smallest loss | Smallest loss | Smallest loss |
| Hard folding, stacked at the cab | Roughly a third of the bed | Roughly a quarter | Roughly a fifth |
| Retractable, canister at the bulkhead | Permanent, and proportionally largest | Permanent | Permanent, and easiest to absorb |
Figures are the proportion of bed length a folded or rolled cover typically occupies, not a manufacturer specification. They are here to make the trade-off visible, and no manufacturer in this registry publishes the dimension - including RETRAX, which does not publish canister dimensions for any retractable.
A foot more bed is a large relative difference on a mid-size truck. On a 5 ft Tacoma bed, a folded hard cover's stack takes a serious share of the total and the argument for a roll-up is strong. At 6 ft, a hard folding cover becomes a comfortable choice rather than a compromise, which is why the BAKFlip MX4 leads this page.
Which cover
BAKFlip MX4
400 lb evenly distributed, 5-year warranty, published 30-minute no-drill clamp-on install, revised EPDM perimeter seals with integrated drainage.
UnderCover UltraFlex
400 lb, 5-year limited warranty, 30-minute install, and the only cover here rated to be driven with the cover folded open — which on a Tacoma that carries bikes, lumber or camping gear is a genuine capability.
RetraxONE XR
Integrated T-slot rails that take most third-party crossbars, cargo holders and bed tents, key-lockable in any position, clamp-on with no drilling. Read the numbers before committing: 200 lb and a one-year warranty, the weakest in our retractable group. Buy it for the rails or not at all. Rack compatibility in full.
TruXedo Lo Pro
Three-quarters of an inch above the bed rails, published, with a limited lifetime defect warranty and tool-free removal. The flattest soft option.
The picks in detail
#1 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#2 · Carrying tall loads often
UnderCover UltraFlex
UnderCover · Hard folding
The folding cover built to be driven open: it folds to the cab and the maker states you can drive that way, which is the single most useful thing a folding cover can offer a person hauling tall loads.
What it does well
- Rated to be driven with the cover folded open — most folding covers simply do not say this
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating with a 5-year warranty behind it
- Polymer core gives the panel more dent resistance than a hollow aluminum skin
Where it gives way
- Folded to the cab it still consumes bed length, driving or parked
- UnderCover's warranty specifically rules out rear-towing the vehicle with the cover on — read it before you flat-tow
- Matte finish needs a dedicated protectant rather than wax
Skip it if: Towing from the rear with the cover fitted — UnderCover's own warranty says not to.
| Construction | Aluminum with a high-density polymer core |
|---|---|
| Finish | Matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5-year limited |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None on most applications |
| Bed access | 100 percent, all the time — rated to drive folded open |
Specifications read from RealTruck — UnderCover UltraFlex (Gen 3) published specifications.

#3 · T-slot rack compatibility
RetraxONE XR
RETRAX · Retractable (manual)
The T-slot retractable at the accessible end of the RETRAX range. Read the two published numbers before you buy: 200 lb, and one year.
What it does well
- Integrated T-slot rails at the lowest price in the RETRAX retractable line
- Key-lockable in any position, the same as the more expensive models
- Polycarbonate deck is lighter than the PRO's double-wall aluminum
Where it gives way
- 200 lb rating — a quarter of what the Extang folding covers publish and under half the RetraxPRO MX
- One-year warranty, against limited lifetime on the RetraxPRO MX
- Canister cost in bed length is the same as the expensive models without the matching durability numbers
Skip it if: Carrying anything meaningful on top — 200 lb is less than half what the PRO models publish.
| Construction | Aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate, aluminum side rails and tracks |
|---|---|
| Finish | Premium textured matte black |
| Load rating | 200 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | Limited hassle-free, 1 year from purchase |
| Locking | Key-lockable in any position, 2x key-lockable security |
| Rails | Integrated T-slot rails for racks, cargo holders, tents, crossbars |
| Drilling | None — clamp-on, no cutting or drilling |
Specifications read from RealTruck — RetraxONE XR published specifications.

#4 · A soft cover you keep
Extang Trifecta 2.0
Extang · Tri-fold (soft)
The soft tri-fold with the longest warranty: limited lifetime on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware and the vinyl itself, with adhesive-free snap-on seals instead of the stick-on strips cheap covers use.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime covering the vinyl as well as the frame — soft covers usually exclude the fabric
- Adhesive-free snap-on seals do not peel off in the sun the way stick-on strips do
- Tool-free install at Level 1 difficulty
Where it gives way
- Two-thirds bed access, where a roll-up gives you the whole bed
- Tri-fold geometry means the folded stack sits at the bulkhead taking height
- Still a soft cover — no load rating and no real security
Skip it if: Full bed access. Folded forward it gives two-thirds, and that is the published figure.
| Construction | Marine-grade tarp on an aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware and vinyl covering |
| Install difficulty | Level 1 — tool-free, no drilling |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when open |
| Sealing | Adhesive-free triple-fin snap-on seals |
Specifications read from RealTruck — Extang Trifecta 2.0 published specifications.

#5 · A soft cover that sits flush
TruXedo Lo Pro
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The TruXport with the profile taken out of it: a published three-quarters of an inch above the rails, a leather-grained finish, and a limited lifetime warranty against defects.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime defect warranty — the longest coverage in this registry
- Three-quarters of an inch above the rails is a published figure and it looks it
- Rails mount inside the bed, so the bed rail caps stay visible
Where it gives way
- Nearly full access, not full — the rolled bundle and its buckles stay in the bed
- Soft cover, so the security story is the same as every soft cover: there isn't one
- An hour to fit rather than the TruXport's 30 minutes
Skip it if: Anyone expecting the whole bed clear. Rolled and buckled it gives nearly full access, not the TruXport's clean 100 percent.
| Construction | Industrial-grade tear-resistant vinyl, gloss-black powder-coated aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Leather-grained vinyl |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime against manufacturing and material defects |
| Stated install time | Less than 1 hour |
| Drilling | None — no-drill clamp-on mounting |
| Profile height | ¾ inch above the bed rails |
| Bed access | Roll to the bulkhead and buckle for nearly full access; tool-free removal |
Specifications read from RealTruck — TruXedo Lo Pro published specifications.

Common questions
How do I tell if my Tacoma has the 5 ft or 6 ft bed?
Measure along the bed floor from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate. The 6 ft bed is around 73 inches inside and the 5 ft around 60 — a wide enough gap that one measurement settles it. The 5 ft bed is the double-cab default and much more common.
What is the best tonneau cover for a Tacoma 6 ft bed?
The BAKFlip MX4 — 400 lb, a 5-year warranty and a published 30-minute no-drill install. On the longer bed a hard folding cover's stack is comfortably absorbable, which it is not on the 5 ft bed. The UnderCover UltraFlex is the pick if you carry tall loads, being the only cover here rated to be driven folded open.
Will a tonneau cover work with the Tacoma deck rail system?
Depends on the cover, and every manufacturer publishes which case applies: clamps over the rail, requires it removed, or not offered. On a Tacoma this check comes before cover type and before brand.
Is the RetraxONE XR worth it on a Tacoma?
Only if you specifically want its integrated T-slot rails for a rack, tent or crossbars. The rails are genuinely useful on a Tacoma, but the cover publishes 200 lb and a one-year warranty, which are the weakest figures in our retractable group. Buy it for the rails or buy something else.
