The Best Tonneau Covers for the Honda Ridgeline
A unibody truck with a trunk in the bed floor and a tailgate that swings as well as drops. Both change what a cover has to do.

What this is based on: published manufacturer specifications and warranty terms, cited on each cover; independent published tests where they exist, named and linked; and verifiable owner reports of specific failure modes. We have not fitted these covers to a truck, we do not run a test lab, and we do not claim a test we did not run. Where the evidence for a cover is thin, the page says it is thin.

Scores are our own editorial judgment on the rubric published at our editorial policy page, weighing security, weather sealing, bed access, install effort, durability, value. They are read off published specifications, warranty terms and sourced owner reports. They are not measurements we took, and they are not user ratings.
The short answer
The Ridgeline has a lockable trunk in the bed floor. A cover that has to be opened to reach it changes how you use the truck daily, so roll-up geometry matters more here than on a conventional pickup.
The tailgate swings sideways as well as dropping. Confirm the cover's rear seal does not fight the swing mode.
Buy the TruXedo TruXport — rolling fully forward keeps the trunk and the swing tailgate both usable.
Ridgeline generations and bed
| Generation | Years | Bed lengths sold | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second generation | 2017 onward | 5.3 ft (one length) | Unibody; in-bed trunk and dual-action tailgate standard |
| First generation | 2006-2014 | 5 ft (one length) | Separate fitment; aftermarket support has thinned |
Bed lengths are the nominal figures manufacturers key their fitment charts to. Measure your own bed from the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate and give the retailer that number - it is the one that has to be right.
The in-bed trunk
Honda puts a lockable, drainable storage well under the bed floor behind the rear axle. It is the Ridgeline's best feature and the single thing a tonneau cover most affects, because the trunk lid opens upward into the space a closed cover occupies.
Practically: whichever cover you fit, you will be opening it to reach the trunk. That makes the cost of opening the deciding factor, which is why a soft roll-up scores higher here than it does on most trucks. Rolling a TruXport forward is one motion; folding and strapping three rigid panels is several, and you will do it every time you want what is in the trunk.
The dual-action tailgate
The Ridgeline tailgate both drops conventionally and swings sideways on a hinge. The swing mode is how you reach the trunk without climbing into the bed, and it is genuinely useful.
A tonneau cover's rear seal sits on the top edge of the tailgate, and swinging it sideways is a motion the seal was not designed around. Check the manufacturer's fitment note for the Ridgeline specifically — most covers handle it, but you want to know before rather than after.
Which cover for a Ridgeline
TruXedo TruXport — the pick
Published 100 percent bed access when rolled forward, 30-minute no-drill clamp-on install, 5-year warranty. On a truck where you open the cover to reach the trunk, the cover that opens in one motion is the right one.
BAKFlip MX4 — if you want hard panels
400 lb, 5-year warranty, published 30-minute install, EPDM seals with drainage. Buy it for the security and rating, accepting that reaching the trunk means folding panels each time.
Extang Trifecta 2.0
Limited lifetime warranty including the vinyl, adhesive-free triple-fin snap-on seals, tool-free install. Two-thirds access, which on a 5.3 ft bed is most of it.
The Ridgeline is a trunk with a bed on top
Most Ridgeline owners did not buy a work truck. They bought a vehicle that takes bikes, camping gear and flat-packed furniture without the footprint or ride of a body-on-frame pickup. A cover turns the open bed into something closer to a lockable estate car boot, which is why it is one of the higher-value accessories on this particular truck.
The picks in detail
#1 · Full bed access on a budget
TruXedo TruXport
TruXedo · Roll-up (soft)
The roll-up most people mean when they say roll-up: vinyl over a clamp-on frame, 30 minutes to fit, 5-year warranty, rolls forward for 100 percent bed access with nothing left in the bed.
What it does well
- Rolls completely forward, so full bed access costs you nothing but the roll itself
- 5-year warranty on a soft cover at this price is genuinely good
- Lightest install in the registry — 30 minutes, no tools beyond what is in the box
Where it gives way
- Vinyl offers no meaningful theft resistance; treat it as a weather and privacy cover
- Rolled to the bulkhead it sits proud of the rails, so it is visible and in the way of a full-height load
- Vinyl needs a UV protectant on a schedule or it chalks
Skip it if: Security. A soft vinyl cover keeps weather and eyes off your cargo; it does not stop a knife.
| Construction | Vinyl over a clamp-on aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None — no cutting, drilling or modifications |
| Bed access | 100 percent — rolls forward to the cab |
| Mounting | Clamp-on, vehicle-specific hardware included |

#2 · Most truck owners
BAKFlip MX4
BAK Industries · Hard folding
The default hard folding cover, and the one most buyers should start from: 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty, 100 percent bed access, and a seal design the maker revised specifically to stop bulkhead seepage.
What it does well
- 400 lb evenly distributed rating is at the top of the folding class, and it is published rather than implied
- The revised EPDM perimeter seal plus drain system targets the bulkhead, which is where folding covers actually leak
- Folds flat against the cab for full bed access without taking the cover off the truck
- 5-year warranty is longer than most hard folding covers in the same bracket
Where it gives way
- Folded open it occupies roughly the front third of the bed — the published 100 percent access means the bed is reachable, not that the space is free
- Textured black finish shows water spotting on dark trucks more than a gloss panel does
- No published figure for cover weight, so the one-person-install question is unanswered by the maker
Skip it if: Anyone who needs the bed open and covered at the same time all day. Folded against the cab it eats the front third of the bed, and nothing folding escapes that.
| Construction | Multi-layer aluminum, polymer-reinforced top panels |
|---|---|
| Finish | Textured matte black |
| Load rating | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Stated install time | 30 minutes or less |
| Drilling | None required on most trucks |
| Bed access | 100 percent — folds flush against the cab |
| Sealing | EPDM perimeter seals, integrated drainage |

#3 · A soft cover you keep
Extang Trifecta 2.0
Extang · Tri-fold (soft)
The soft tri-fold with the longest warranty: limited lifetime on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware and the vinyl itself, with adhesive-free snap-on seals instead of the stick-on strips cheap covers use.
What it does well
- Limited lifetime covering the vinyl as well as the frame — soft covers usually exclude the fabric
- Adhesive-free snap-on seals do not peel off in the sun the way stick-on strips do
- Tool-free install at Level 1 difficulty
Where it gives way
- Two-thirds bed access, where a roll-up gives you the whole bed
- Tri-fold geometry means the folded stack sits at the bulkhead taking height
- Still a soft cover — no load rating and no real security
Skip it if: Full bed access. Folded forward it gives two-thirds, and that is the published figure.
| Construction | Marine-grade tarp on an aluminum frame |
|---|---|
| Finish | Vinyl grain |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime on rails, aluminum, clamps, bows, hardware and vinyl covering |
| Install difficulty | Level 1 — tool-free, no drilling |
| Bed access | Two-thirds when open |
| Sealing | Adhesive-free triple-fin snap-on seals |

#4 · The lowest price that still states its specs
Tyger Auto T1 Soft Roll-Up
Tyger Auto · Roll-up (soft)
The budget roll-up that actually publishes its materials: dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl on aircraft-grade aluminum rails with stainless clamps, and an adjustable tension system to keep it flat.
What it does well
- 24 oz dual-coated vinyl is a real published figure, not 'heavy-duty vinyl'
- Adjustable rail tension is the fix for the wrinkling that plagues cheap roll-ups
- Stainless clamps rather than plated steel, which is where budget covers usually rust first
Where it gives way
- The published warranty term is inconsistent between listings — check the one you are actually buying
- Velcro side sealing is the weakest seal design in this registry and it is also the most common leak complaint on roll-ups
- No published load rating, which is normal for soft covers but worth saying
Skip it if: Anyone who wants a single clear warranty answer — Tyger's published term varies by listing between five years and limited lifetime.
| Construction | Dual-coated 24 oz marine-grade vinyl, aircraft-grade aluminum side rails |
|---|---|
| Clamps | Stainless steel |
| Sealing | Velcro side strips, latch lock at the tailgate |
| Tension | Adjustable tension system on the side rails |
| Warranty | Published as 5 years on some listings, limited lifetime on others |
| Drilling | None — no-drill clamp-on |

Common questions
What is the best tonneau cover for a Honda Ridgeline?
The TruXedo TruXport. Because you have to open the cover to reach the Ridgeline's in-bed trunk, the cost of opening it is the deciding factor — and a soft roll-up that rolls fully forward in one motion beats folding and strapping three rigid panels several times a week.
Will a tonneau cover block the Ridgeline's in-bed trunk?
Not permanently, but you will open the cover to reach it. The trunk lid opens upward into the space a closed cover occupies, so plan on opening the cover every time. That is the reason roll-up geometry is worth more on a Ridgeline than on a conventional pickup.
Does a tonneau cover work with the Ridgeline's swing-out tailgate?
Most do, but check the manufacturer's fitment note for the Ridgeline specifically. The cover's rear seal sits on the top edge of the tailgate, and the sideways swing is a motion most seals were not designed around.
What size bed does the Honda Ridgeline have?
About 5.3 feet on the current generation from 2017, in one length only. The 2006-2014 first generation had a roughly 5 ft bed and is a separate fitment with thinner aftermarket support.
